More on the WTC Disaster (Updated)

Of course this is not game related (we do not expect to be doing any further game coverage today), but with the legit news sites being almost impossible to access at times today, we've been getting loads of requests for more information about what's been going on. Here is the latest as of about 9:00 PM EDT:

  • President Bush addressed the nation 8:30 PM EDT. Here's a wire report: WASHINGTON (AP) - A grim-faced President Bush condemned ghastly attacks in Washington and New York on Tuesday and vowed to "find those responsible and bring them to justice." In the second Oval Office address of his presidency, Bush said the United States would retaliate against ``those behind these evil acts,'' and any country that harbors them.

To recap:

  • In two separate attacks, hijacked planes struck both main towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan this morning, and both of the "twin towers" subsequently collapsed.
  • A hijacked plane struck the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and part of it has collapsed as well.
  • A hijacked plane crashed in western Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Reports indicate the hijackers planned to crash this plane into Camp David in Maryland.
  • 47 Story WTC building seven, one of the five (relatively) smaller buildings in the World Trade Center also later collapsed from ancillary damage.
  • The White House, the Pentagon, and the Capitol Building were all evacuated, all domestic flights in the US have been grounded through at least noon tomorrow.
  • Other closings include most federal offices, the stock markets, the Disney theme parks, and the cancellation of today's Major League Baseball schedule. The President's speech announced that all federal agencies will be open for business tomorrow.
  • Broadcasts out of Afghanistan showed evidence of missile attacks and antiaircraft fire, but what connection this has to today's apparent terrorist attacks in the US is not clear at this point. The US has denied involvement in these attacks.
  • In the first hints of any sort at the scope of casualties, the New York City Fire Department has estimated that as many as half of the 400 firefighters dispatched to the scene are missing. CNN has said that 78 Police officers are missing. Also, the death toll from those on the four hijacked planes has been placed at 266. The number of dead and injured at the Pentagon has been widely reported as about 100. No estimates of the number of victims from the World Trade Center have been made.
  • People throughout the United States have are being urged to donate blood to help offset significant shortages in New York and Washington. The American Red Cross in Greater New York or the American Red Cross are places to contact about donating blood or money, or both.
  • Some news sites seem to be back online. Here are some links that have been more reliable: CNN.com; CNET.com; Yahoo; The New York Times; washingtonpost.com; usnews.com; ABCNEWS.com; FOXNews.com; MSNBC; and BBC News Online.

All of our thoughts go out to the victims of these attacks and their families and friends in what must be an incredibly difficult time.

My heart goes out to everyone this affects, It's hard to believe what's on TV is actually real.

Strange how your folks say about things like this happening in their lifetime that affected them, but you never appriciate something like that until its in your lifetime.

First one for me was Princess Diana car crash, this is the second.

Very sad day, and the aftermath sounds even more worrying.

I only wish to express my sorrow to the families who lost loved ones today.

Please, everyone, I know that you angry for what has happened, as am I. But anger and fingerpointing is is the very thing that made this act happen today. I KNOW those responsible will be brought to justice, whether it be this life or the next. Just please, don't let this incident put us into a frenzy of anger and cause us to destroy ourselves. What has happened has happened, no matter who's fault it is. We need to now look forward and figure out how to prevent it from happening again.

Just my two cents, for what it's worth.

In response to #19, if you live in a country like Sudan or Lebanon or Yemen where known terrorists are helped and protected, then yeah, I hope we scour, bomb and salt the earth of those countries. I'm sorry, but many of those countries are filled with religious fanatics who have nothing more on their minds than wiping out Westerners.

heh, yeah actually i am working in the middle east; but i appreciate your apology in the event that i get cluster-bombed.

I'll tell you why we call it cowardly:

It's attacking the "women and children" instead of attacking the enemy directly. Imagine a guy who hates you. Instead of fighting you, he kills your pet dog and cat and kills himself.

Does anyone else think it's ironic that all the major news websites are down when the entire reason the internet was created was to have a reliable form of communications during times of emergency? This is what heppens when everything is server dependant as opposed to distributed.

Mike, I'm not saying that I have sympathy for the Palestinians who hate Israel; I'm merely stating that it would be a very smart move on the part of the Israelis to think up such a plan, however unlikely because the US will be more sensitive to Isreael's plight.

I'm really sick and tired of letting these countries play games with us while we sit idly by and watch our fellow countrymen die.

If Bush does nothing I will be sorely disappointed, and I'm sure that it will encourage more terrorists. A Lion may look fearsome with its sharp teeth and claws, but if it doesn't use them to protect itself the Hyenas will tear it to pieces bit by bit.

Anyone who thinks taking civilian lives to further your cause isn't cowardly is only fooling themselves. The cowardly act ISN'T the suicide itself. IT's hiding being your own death that is cowardly. It's the fear of retribution that's cowardly. It's not giving the innocent people a chance to clear the area that is cowardly. It's hiding behind your OWN CITIZENS that is cowardly.

You cannot turn an act this haenous into some kind of "spiritual warrior" bravery. That may be the motivator, but that certainly does NOT make it true, nor acceptable.

I hope the people that did this find that behind that death is their own eternity of hell.

If a missle shield covers a small threat, great. If by covering that small threat it creates greater threats, then we have spent a billion plus on increasing the threat to national secruity. The math that says a missle shield will help us is as 'fuzzy' as any you will find. Even if the Soviet Union wanted to do a major nuclear attack, they would sneak the bombs in instead of launching. No return address = no retalitaton.

From the radio. The plane crash near pittsburgh is related to NYC. A passenger in the rear of the plane made a 911 call describing what was happening.

Oh, and those who are raging against taking out civilians in these kamikaze flights. From a sensible POV... what better way to strike against a nation then involving innocents in your attacks?

Hmm lets see, and HOW do these 10 guys Navigate the Aircraft to trhe proper target? Luck? or do you think TRAINING and something to do with it? How long would it take to find out HOW to operate a Boeing 737 sufficiently to be able to take it off its flight path, calculate your position and navigate to the target while holding off the passengers and crew? And for every one that got through probably 3-4 were stopped somewhere along the line. THINK.

Just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you.

A fifth plane has been confirmed down over Pennsylvania, a United Airlines flight.

Paint me a picture of a holocaust...

The death toll is being estimated at over 15,000 now, according to CNN.

And what is today's date, in nubers?

9/11

What is Osama bin Laden's name, in numbers?

9, 1, 1

Coincidence?

Well, a man who sacrifices his life is brave. When he also takes HUNDREDS of civilian lives with him on an attack against a target packed with tens of thousands of other civilians THEN it becomes cowardly.

That's murder any fucking way you slice it.

by the target, Idiot. If they had attacked a legitimate military target, then they are attacking with whatever means at their disposal. When you Hijack an AIRCRAFT FULL OF INNOCENT MEN WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND CRASH IT INTO A BUILDING OF INNOCENT CIVILIANS then you are a freaking coward and fanatic.

I am sorry for all the death, but I imagine that mr. bush will nuke palestine now, meaning that all survivors will emigrate to england.whic is nice, but this is all just leading up to the big cake at the end, in which we will all die.
After all hasn't every other prediction of nostradamus come true, inluding plagues of locusts more recently. we are long over-due for an armaggedon.
