Out of the Blue

I could have stood a little less advance hype about that Band of Brothers dealie on HBO last night, but that was pretty impressive stuff. For the most part this easily matched the scope of a major motion picture, and considering it's an ongoing mini-series, I imagine the whole thing must have cost at least a gazillion dollars. I think I'm most impressed with its willingness to deal with the aspects of war that are impossible to paint in a heroic light, so that it's not just the "good guys versus the bad guys." As someone who once questioned why HBO was so determined to create original programming, I have to say, they have gotten to the point where almost everything they air is significantly better than almost everything on traditional network television.

Anyone who enjoys this series should read the series of books by Donald Burgett, beginning with "Curahee!". They are the author's story of his experiences in WW2. He served in the same division, and regiment as the group in BOB. It is a gripping tale of the realities of war and would make a terrific movie.

I can't believe that you question if it was good! I guess you didn't get to see epsiode 2 that don't make sense though here in canada we get TMN (The Movie Network) its ah got really semi old movies on like nurse betty was on for the frist time friday so they are slow getting movies, but thank the lord they get all the HBO stuff.
Ok back on topic Episode 2 was just spectacular you know the jump part that was like "HOLLY SHIT" this is good. Its like got all the magic of Saving Private Ryan but it's just so much longer which SO rocks I can't wait.

Sorry, but I can't imagine how someone can watch the Sopranos, B of B, Sex and the City, 6 Ft Under, and Arliss and not think HBO kicks major ass. We're not talking about, "yeah, I suppose it's better than NBC" That shit is flat out great! And HBO should be commended for doing more than just running old movies and trying to make an easy buck.

So bag on it all you like, I mean, that does make you so cool doesn't it?

I didn't watch it, but I CAN tell you what sucked about it...It was playing on two HBO channels simultaneously. Did they run out of other movies?

No, but one was in widescreen and the other was fullscreen. I, of course, watched it widescreen.

If BOB follows Ambrose' book, you'll see Schwimmer later. As for the office space guy, I think the resemblance to the real Cpt Nixon is incredible... Although I keep waiting to hear "...I believe you have my stapler..."

I have to say like some others.. I actually LOL when I saw him on screen for the first time.. In the same scene that we saw him my smile slowly dissapeared. Schwimmer did an outstanding job playing a man who was obviously scared, very paranoid, a little slow on the uptake.. and well.. just plain mean. These scene when Winters went ahead and signed the court-martial papers was a classic.. Schwimmer looked as weasley and scared as Nixon did.

He had a tone in his voice that I had never heard from him before.. "WEEKEND PASS CANCELLED!" ..he was a VERY good S.O.B. in that 1st part. The scene when the squad tricked him into thinking that Colonel Sink was talking to him behind a bush went from comical to pathetic for Schwimmer... it was just a surprising performance for me.

Cant wait for the DVD!

It's a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma!
In the Simpsons, it went "He's like a riddle wrapped in an
enigma wrapped in a vest."

Just thought I'd bring this to your attention...

...well, carry on.

I'm usually sensitive to ecosystem issues, but if we're going to be destroying the Amazon, I think we should definitely focus on exterminating this cadiru fish, for the sake of peniskind.

Technically, I thought it was great. All the little details were there. I'm an ex-Airborne Infantry Officer and military history buff and it all looked great. The gear, the langauge, the settings.

The only small mistake I saw was when a soldier, after some heavy firing with his .30 cal machine gun, picked it up by the barrel with his bare hands and moved out. His hand would have melted.

I will definitely be watching all the other episodes.

I really enjoyed BoB, although I could've done with out the emotional "this is an important show" music in the beginning of each episode. It had a lot of great little touches, including the German from Eugene, OR and the flaming bodies falling out the planes hit by ack-ack fire. The battles were well done with hand-cam scenes giving a "you are there" feel. You had the Lt. dropping a grenade he had just pulled the pin on, improvising a means to destroy one of the artillery pieces and a bastard CO making the company run a 3-mile hill after eating a bunch of spagetti.

(a later scene with Cpt Sobel in the Colonel's office reminded me of the end of "Good Morning, Vietnam". I was waiting for the Col. to tell Sobel "I've covered for you alot of times because I thought you were a little crazy. But you're not crazy, you're just mean".)
