Kingdom Come: Deliverance II: Brushes with Death

Brushes with Death is now available, adding the first of three planned narrative add-ons for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, the action/RPG sequel from Warhorse Studios and Deep Silver. The DLC is available on the Epic Games Store, GOG.com,* and Steam, and it is already yours if you own the Gold Edition or the Expansion Pass. It comes with a patch updating the base game to version 1.3, adding quality of life improvements, bug fixes, and a free horse racing feature. The Brushes with Death DLC Trailer paints a picture of what to expect, and the description has more:

Delve into a new storyline in Brushes with Death, where Henry must help a mysterious artist uncover his enigmatic past. In a series of quests spanning both maps of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance II world, Henry must find, persuade, and sometimes eliminate a host of familiar and unfamiliar characters to help his new friend complete the most important painting of his life. Discover the answers to the many questions that surround this eclectic character. Who and what is he? How does he know so much? And why does he carry around a painted human skull?

I loved this game, played it a couple times through right at launch including replaying different sections to unlock achievements I'd missed, etc. But now I wait for all the content updates to arrive before revisiting (mayyyybe in hardcore mode), and in the meantime I had to uninstall because every significant patch is asking to re-download basically the entire game because of how their data files are structured...

It probably didn't help that I got frustrated with it after following this huge chain of quests that were all but impossible, with stubborn ass gypsies that refuse to back down from strait up disowning each other. When I finally - after traversing the map a dozen times from one to another - found a solution that left none of them happy and was rewarded a whole 50 groshen for the hours of frustration the quest had lead me through. That's enough to buy like.. 10 arrows lol. I quit playing right then.

See, that's actually what's so great about this game -- it's very possible to achieve an unfavorable outcome in many of the quest lines, and it sounds like that's what you managed to do there. I reunited the family and in addition to the token scripted reward, the entire camp was so grateful that I got to enjoy various perks including a bed to sleep in any time, free training, preferred status with the vendors, etc.

Though I am not remotely close to finishing it, quite frankly I haven't enjoyed this one as much as I expected. Mechanically it's a fairly large improvement over the original, but the quest design is somewhat mediocre and the combat is a pain in the ass, I think because enemies don't follow the same rules as the player has to. I've fought peasant bandits with better sword skills than Aragorn who avoid master strikes like a god while a knight in chain mail gets cut to ribbons.

I could not get far into the first game. I'll try this one when the GOY edition with all the DLC and patches hit on sale some day.
