Out of the Blue

So DOOM: The Dark Ages is how officially available, and as I previously mentioned I'm pretty pumped. I liked DOOM Eternal fine, but loved its predecessor DOOM (2016) far more, and this sounds like this prequel circles back a bit to that earlier circle of Hell. When I recently mentioned buying a copy some of you urged me to pitch for a freebie. But I don't request review copies of games, since I'm not a reviewer, and no one needs to read uncritical praise from someone who just likes most games.

Obituary: Joe Don Baker Dead: 'Walking Tall' Star Was 89 - The Hollywood Reporter. Like Charles Gray, played both a good guy and a bad guy in separate James Bond films.

It is kind of hard to believe someone with Scarlett Johansson's experience doesn't understand how the Oscars work. Although I do have to say, from a 30,000 ft view it is obvious Hollywood is pretty much all about the Benjamins. So, you might guess that the Oscars would be based on how much the films earned. But yeah, it has never been that way.
It actually used to be that way. Blockbusters used to win often. Return of the King, Titanic, and Gladiator are examples. Only in the past couple of decades has it switched to "Let's only nominate indie films." Infinity War was the better film, IMO. But also snubbed.

If you're going to mention popular being out better, then please remove Titanic and RotK and replace them with Forrest Gump and Braveheart

Scarlett Johansson Calls Out Oscars for 'Avengers: Endgame' Snub - Variety.
If she wanted an Oscar she should have played Black Widow with Tourette syndrome or a limp or something.

NOBODY 2 Trailer (2025).
More Bod Odenkirk being a badass. Looks fun. Plus Christopher Lloyd who feels like he's been the same age since Back to the Future.

I can't argue that, my own reflex was "what horror movies would even be good enough to consider for an award?" Not a fan of the genre though so the stigma is strong with this one admittedly. The last true horror movie I watched was Final Destination 2. On a date no less. She laughed so loud through the scene where the logs fly through the cop's windshield...causing a whole pile up....the whole theatre was looking at her and not the movie.

Yes, it is possible for blockbuster films to win Oscars, call me a silly fool if you want, but I believe they didn't win because they were blockbusters. Ben-Hur (1959) is a great example. Its $15.175 million dollar budget at the time was the largest of any film produced. After its release it was number one at the monthly US box office for six months. It then went on to win 11 of the 12 Oscars it was nominated for. I feel safe in saying none of those wins were because of its financial success. Although I suppose you could argue the success is something the Academy voters could be swayed by. Then and now. *shrug*

As for more recent successful winners, I wouldn't argue against any of the wins for Return of the King, Titanic, or the Gladiator.

Superhero movies have a stigma attached to them by both segments of the population and Hollywood itself. When Endgame came out, that stigma was stronger than it is now. Personally, I think it was nomination-worthy in multiple categories, but I can't think of one that it should have actually won. If Endgame came out today, I think it might get nominated more, but Endgame (and the movies that led up to it) created that respect. SJ can't take today's attitude and apply it to yesterday's releases. They also created expectations with those films, which I think it's fair to say they have largely not lived up to since that release. I have enjoyed much of what they have released, but I am in a tiny minority and for all my fanboy chirping...Even I know they aren't improving or even maintaining the level of quality they seemed to be pursuing before.

Moon Knight was nominated for 8 Emmys and won one of them, for sound editing. I think most people would agree it deserved that recognition. Oscar Isaac not being nominated for Best Actor was disappointing, but again, the superhero stigma strikes and I don't think he would have won anyway. I can't really think of any other superhero movie or show since Endgame that has approached Moon Knights level of overall production quality from top to bottom. Except maybe Daredevil: Reborn, but I haven't finished that yet.

It was the ultimate popcorn flick that appealed to kids and adults alike. It had more stars in it than the next 20 movies. It was the culmination of a 10-year stretch of intertwining stories in a connected universe. Of course it did a lot right. To make money. It was absolutely NOT worthy of an Oscar.
