Out of the Blue

CNN reports on the impact of today's deadline that requires U.S. domestic air travelers to present REAL ID-compliant identification. I find it weird that this is surprising anyone, as the REAL ID act was passed in 2005 and the original deadline for new ID was 2008. But 20 years(!) after it was mandated, and 17 years after it was first supposed to take effect, this is still catching people off guard.

REAL Round-up

I finally got my Real ID last year. I doubt I'll ever need it for domestic travel since I never go anywhere, but doesn't hurt to be prepared anyway.

They should have just made it so that anytime a new ID is requested, you could only get a Real ID. Instead it was left to individuals to guess what the government is doing (like taxes) which never ends well.

Got my Real ID just before the pandemic shut everything down.

It always surprises me that people wait until the last minute to get things done.

Glad not to be part of the mass of humanity trying to get a Real ID.

I still have my Tennessee driver's license from 5 years ago as my only identification. Well, that, and my handicap ID that I got from DMV when I moved up to Jersey. It's not like I am planning on going anywhere.

This prompted me to wonder how many US citizens have passports. Apparently about half of them, more than I would have guessed.

Just renewed my license about a month ago, but didn’t get Real ID. If I’m going to be crossing any borders it will be illegally and paperwork free!

And thanks to flight simulators, I can fly myself anywhere I need to go too!!
I should be coding.

If you have a driver's license, why would you not have gotten it by now? I've had a Real ID driver's license for over 10 years. I'd pretty much forgotten that was a thing until I saw the panic over it today. I don't remember having to do anything special to get it. I remember when I renewed it, they just asked if I wanted it.

We don't have to renew our licenses very often around here... and last time I did it I didn't have the birth certificate on hand. So.. I ended up with a non-REALID version instead.

Several states REALLY dragged their feet. Not sure if they were incompetent or objected for some reason. So, in some cases it wasn't people being lazy, it was the Real ID licenses simply not being available.

Americans just don't give a shit until it's too late...and then they blame everybody else. It's our culture. The real way to roll something like this out is to give no notice, make it due in 24 hours (or something similarly ridiculous), and then just use scary words when you extend the deadline a bit...until it's done. You will get lots of "How dare they!" in social media...but that doesn't cause any blowback in terms of reality, so who cares. You can't "early bird gets the worm" in the US. Nobody cares. It's why I have been comparing 2000s+ America to 1980s-90s Russia. Same general "fuck that, fuck you, fuck whatever" attitude paired with "I blame everyone but myself" personalities.

I was kinda hoping that they would pass the SAFE act a few weeks before the election and everyone would have to get a RealID to reregister to vote... that shit would have been funny as hell. ohwell, damn the luck. I got my RealID a few years ago.

Some places have insane expiration dates, like AZ, where you might not think about it. My AZ drivers license from 2005 is still good... for 20 more years.

WA offer(ed as of 2015) 3 different licenses. 1 has minimal proof of who you are, 1 Real ID, 1 a Border crossing card (and Real ID). They cost different amounts, but illegals could get the first one with just a bill in their name and address (not that it had to be their real name or address).

Andor season 2 is incredible—easily on par with the first season, and in many ways, it surpasses it.

On the subject of Real ID, it's not only required for flights but also for entering any federal buildings.

I'd love to hope that Disney would invest in more Star Wars fare of Andor's quality but I seriously doubt it.

I don't know that this is true, but I feel like Andor is targeted at an older audience because it takes place during a time that the older audiences are far more interested in, compared to say the prequels, on average. I am torn because I really want Star Wars to gtfo out of the Skywalker/Palpatine era, but at the same time this show is easily the most interesting and entertaining SW show I have watched...and I have really liked nearly all of the other stuff. Andor is just a whole level above it all.

Andor did for Star Wars what Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy did for Batman and superhero films—it made it feel real. Then I have to remind myself, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." Oh, right. We're watching ancient history.
