You either guessed correctly or you remember me stating my policy of never voting again. As far as me being blind... physically I'm very close. Ideologically, we'll see won't we.

Trump White House on 100% Movie Tariff: 'No Final Decisions' Made Yet - TheWrap.

Oddly, Trump is sort of doing the unions' jobs for them. After all those writer and actor strikes kept shutting down the studios for the better part of a year, one of the unfortunate take-home lessons that the studios learned was that the films/series that were done in some overseas countries kept on filming, while the ones in the U.S. stalled endlessly and lead to financial disaster. They've been moving out of the U.S. even faster than before. More long union strikes look to be brewing in the future also. Sort of unexpected that Trump is massively bolstering the unions' position.

I wonder how production fits into all of this? It's possible to film here but have much of the expensive production done elsewhere.

Next up for Drumpf's "genius" tariff ideas:

- Tariff on migrating birds, especially the Canadian Geese, what assholes.

- Tariff on illegal animal ( bears, wolves, etc, actual animals ) immigrants crossing the border.

- Tariff on the Gulf Stream's heat.

- Tariff on Hurricanes coming from Cuba.

Etc...

How would it even be enforced? Movies aren't imported on shipping containers. Once a single copy of a movie is in the US, it can be redistributed and copied within the county and in that case, it can't be tariffed. It can be taxed as a domestic product but that would require an act of Congress. Neither Trump nor Lutnick seems to know anything about how industries function.

Say you are a hollywood studio and you decide to film a huge epic medieval film, on location in Europe. If you decide to do that you will have to pay some kind of tax, unless you decide to film it in a studio-set in hollywood.

Basically Trump wants the studios to film everything in the US. Which would suck, for everyone involved.
Here in British Columbia we have a huge tax incentive for Hollywood to film in Vancouver and around our province. Our Film Tax Credit is now 35%. Californian film-support workers and digital effects studios hate it, but the studios themselves are absolutely loving it. It's a horrible waste of taxpayer dollars to subsidize American film companies who simply shift the money back to Cali, but that's probably part (or most) of Trump's hatred here: foreign jurisdiction tax incentives. Well, that and sticking it to California. Congrats America, you elected a child to the White House.

On the contrary, just so you're all aware: Having worked in the film industry for most of my junior years (90s - aughts) its easy to reference when something is filmed at Pinewood Studios vs. Atlanta. That means anything SHOT overseas is going to be taxed. It's literally required to report film locations for tax purposes. Now they're going to recommend taxing anything, even briefly shot, overseas. Thunderbolts* is a good example. It was shot both at Pinewood and in Malaysia. How would that work? No one yet knows.

I agree with most others here. This appears to be bluster. As usual.

So, Hollywood and California is making non-American movies now? Cool story, bro.

Jivaro wrote on May 5, 2025, 14:38:
Tariffs of this sort will have even more producers and studios moving out of California and to places like the UK than they have been over the last 10+ years anyway.

??

They will move to places where they will have to pay a +100% tax if they want to show/sell/market their movies in the US instead of making the movies in the US with a 0% tax applied? What?

More like the opposite, dude. Hollywood movie producers have nothing to fear. The tariffs will only hurt non-American movie makers (if Trump is actually consistent for once but I think the non-American movie industry is a pretty soft target that won't have much influence on the general economy so he might actually pull this one through to the end).

Haven't you guys realized that these alt-right conservatives love claiming that they are going to do things just to watch everyone's head explode? Worst case scenario, everything this intellectual midget and his sycophants get done will be reversed almost immediately once he leaves office. That is, if you can actually put someone with a little sense, just the tiniest sliver of integrity, and some backbone in the White House and the Congress in the coming elections. Either way, I'm enjoying the shitshow as best as I can.

I want to believe this will happen, but you have to imagine that they're not just tearing apart the America we knew so the next chump could just reverse everything. They're putting into place security guarantees to ensure either a 3rd term reelect or someone of Trumps' equal to take his place and continue the job. They didn't come this far just to let it all get reversed in 4 years.

This is an attack on California; sticking it to the Hollywood "elite" is just a bonus for Trump. (and Jon Voight for that matter)

Hollywood, the industry, is a global marketplace that happens to be in Hollywood, the city. Tariffs of this sort will have even more producers and studios moving out of California and to places like the UK than they have been over the last 10+ years anyway. I expect Newsome to add this to his lawsuit or start another one if it happens. If Atlanta thinks this will benefit their efforts to become the eastern US Hollywood, they should think this all the way through. If Trump makes folks of this kind of power and means move...they will leave the country entirely, not move to another state.
