Out of the Blue

I want to thank the so many of you who shared your thoughts on the sad passing of our pal RedEye9. The loss still has me reeling (I'm crying again as I write this), but I cannot express how much comfort I take from reading through everyone's fond remembrances. One takeaway from the comments is that stories about game giveaways will henceforth always use the term "snag" in one of its forms in RedEye9's honor. It may seemed forced for those not in the know, but it can be a nice way to remember our lost friend. This will come up right way since Thursday is Epic Games Store giveaway day. So yeah, every time a gamer snags a freebie an angel gets his wings.

It is interesting to hear WLA saying he tells his daughter about the site. Other than a brief mention of saying something like "...I read on the gaming news site I frequent that..." I don't think I have ever mentioned the site to anyone. I always kind of felt like Blue's was a "either you know, or you don't" kind of thing.
A matter of different kind of appreciations.
I always discussed with my daughter about different personalities and emotional attitudes we encounter in life or online (she ended getting a Social Psychology degree, and is now finishing a formative specialization in a couple months).

I value your clarity and Beamer's and also Prez's (yes, many times I wonder what was his mind like *before* his health problem as he can be admirably incisive at times).

But RedEye9 had real passion along with a wide intelligence and a restless inquisitiveness.
That rare combination makes a memorable impression for me.

It saddens me that so many clear minds have a certain part of "not worth the effort" aloofness, up to judgemental distancing, so they are less heard when it can make a difference.

We sorely need more RedEye9s on the sensible side of human, too many on the dumb one.

Same here. I got to wondering after my post that if I might know some of you IRL. I don't do social media and don't like to share personal information online. If any of my current friends use this site, they just don't post or use an alias. They would know me by this name. I'm from a small town, and we didn't get an ISP until late '95 or early '96. I found out about this site from a friend at the time and I've been a regular visitor since, although I didn't register and post on the forums until 2003. I've lost touch with most of my friends from those days, some of which did visit the site for gaming news. The few that I've heard from quit PC gaming. I wonder if any of the others still game or visit this site. Anyone from those days wouldn't know me by this name. I used to go by Reaper back then.

Reaper.....were you on VE3D as well back then? I swear I remember that...but old man brain and all that...

I have some real-life friends who come here occasionally, but nobody who posts in comments or contributes content links to Blue. At least that I am aware of..lol.

Despite being a PC user since roughly 1989, using Blue's forums and posting occasionally in some gaming reddit subs and some Steam forums I have never participated in "social media". I'm pretty sure no one here knows me IRL -- because "Mr. Tact" is an actual real life nickname for me. Let's just say I often felt leaving my filter turned off was a good approach, especially in personal matters. Although I've softened some with age, I'm less likely these days to give my unfiltered opinion if it is going to "cause injury".

No one here knows me. I don't email with any of you, and was a bit surprised to hear how many people RedEye emailed with. Not bad surprised, it's just something that never occurred to me.

I think the gaming store I recently bought a Wii at is pretty near Prez. I should meet him there for a Smash Brothers tournament. I can't think of anything he'd probably enjoy less, haha.

Earlier today I talked by phone with my daughter of this and that as usual.

At one moment I had to say that I was saddened by a Bluesnews regular's passing.
She knows about here by my many commentaries about game news and funny posts, even if she never visited.

When I said RedEye9, she instantly knew and was surprised, as she pictured him as a renacentist and polymath figure I really admired, and so rather beyond the usual cares and tears of this world.

She knows of Prez, BoP, the unique subtle humor of Blue, and others, even of Creston.
Yep, like family away in another country.

I found myself thinking of Redeye9 and this site quite a bit yesterday and today.

BluesNews has been a consistent place for me since its beginning, an anchor if you will. In 1994 I was a 19-year-old American kid living on my own in a foreign country that I barely understood. I had great friends there that I was building relationships with, but being on the other side of the world and having all of my normal support systems unavailable was 24/7 stressful for me. I was poor, I didn't speak the language, and quite frankly...I was more than a little naive. At the same time, I didn't want to tell anyone that, right? Young male ego and all. By the time 95/96 came around, the Internet, and in particular VE3D (RIP Billy), Quakeholio/Shacknews, and Bluesnews, were a way for me to stay connected to my interests in a language I fully understood and with people, American or not, who were into the same stuff. There was a brief gap in my visits due to moving back to the States and then a severe injury, and when I came back here, I created a new login because I forgot my old one. I thought the old name was "Corrandk", my Quake 1 & 2 name, but that didn't work, so I went with my other online nick, Jivaro, from that time forward.

As the years have passed, the visitors and Blue have gone through some stuff together here. Way beyond just the gaming industry. We shared our anger and our sadness through 9/11 here. We have inside jokes that nobody outside Bluesnews would understand unless they were here. We went through the pandemic together, here. We share life's trials and tribulations amongst each other, here. We support and question each other here. We chant DS's name 3 times in ceremonial fashion, here. This is an amazing place you have built, Blue. (and Frans!) I do not have anything like this in my life outside of this page, other than my own Discord server. While that place rocks IMHO, it doesn't have the variety of people and backgrounds that BluesNews has. I enjoy the challenge to my opinions and preconceptions that people bring here. It took me a while to mature into the adult that consciously knows that....but I did that maturing here as well. So, thank you, Blue and team.

Redeye9 was a big part of this institution as a contributor and a poster. He helped to build it by participating daily, and his loss is a big one just on that alone. More than that, however, he was passionate in his beliefs, he was vocal and took action when he could, and he stood on them with 10 toes. I think that's something all of us can admire in an individual. I did admire it in him, and I am glad that he shared it with us. Just like I am glad that the rest of you share yourselves with all of us. Social media and sites like IGN or a Reddit forum can't touch what we have here at Bluesnews.

I don't have much useful to say but I just keep staring at the screen and thinking about things so I guess my mind maybe wants me to put something out here. Farewell, RedEye9. We'll keep snagging those freebies so don't worry yourself about it. I hope you've found peace and are enjoying the next stage. It's time to level up.

To everyone else out there: thanks for the good you put into the world even if it's just comments on a post on a gaming news site. I doubt any of you know my user name as I don't really post much these days, but that's ok. The Age of the Internet is a strange one. After several decades of following this community I consider you all friends though I'd never recognize any of you if we passed on the street. Anyhow, I'm rambling as usual so I'll finish up by inviting anyone who reads this to join me in a tribute to RedEye9 by slowing down today to take the time to find someone who maybe needs just a little bit of extra kindness in their life.

Thanks everyone for letting me ramble.

I haven't been as active here lately. I still try drop by to read the news every day, but lately it's been every 2-3 days and I have to catch up. I missed yesterday, so I didn't catch the news about RedEye9 until this morning. Is far as I know, I don't actually know any of you, but it still feels like losing someone I know when I read about a member's passing.
