New DOOM: The Dark Ages Trailer

Official Trailer 2 for DOOM: The Dark Ages shows off more of the next installment in id Software's DOOM series, which expected to launch on May 15th. The clip includes gameplay footage as well as cinematics setting up the story. Which isn't a typo, as this leans harder into a narrative than we're used to, featuring a surprising number of speaking parts for a series that's always been about shooting first and asking questions later. Here's word:

Developed by id Software, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal that tells an epic cinematic story worthy of the DOOM Slayer’s legend. In this third installment of the modern DOOM series, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the DOOM Slayer, in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell.

I still haven't played 2016 and newer. I last played DOOM was 3. I wonder if I would like these newer DOOM.

Like, who the fuck even cares? They could let AI generate the trash metal or hire a high school band. Or let me do it. I could mash some strings, too, and you couldn't even tell a difference (OK, maybe a minor one).

Well, at least it has a good soundtrack.
Hopefully. I have not heard anything even remotely close to the genius of Mick Gordon in any of the trailers yet. Messing up their relationship with him is the biggest L id has taken in its history. Makes me question whether to get it. If Mick Gordon did the soundtrack it would be a 100% day one buy for me.

I did not know about that so I went looking for info and found Gordon's response here. I have no reason to disbelieve what he has written. Given he "has the receipts" as the kids say, I am far more inclined to believe his side of the story than what Marty Stratton posted on Reddit.

iD, Bethesda, and Zenimax fucked up in a colossal way and, instead of being men of ethics, they chose to act like spoiled toddlers.

That makes it very easy for me to never buy this game.

I didn't know about any of that either, or at least I didn't remember it. What a fucking circus. I know this might make me outdated but hashing this shit out in public instead of behind closed doors or in court is something I am not a fan of....so I was surprised how sympathetic I found myself to Gordon after reading both his and Stratton's accounts. I expected a whiny artist and a pretty concise but detailed rebuttal from the company, believably absolving them from whatever accusations were being made. (or at least attempting to) That is not what we have here.

Gordon's side is detailed, chronologically consistent, and "the receipts" seem pretty solid. His side of things includes his own mistakes, and he owns them. There are more than a couple of times where I stopped and said to myself, "Dude, you should have stopped working right there" or "you didn't really believe that, did you?". I would call that being "conveniently naive" in a narrative like this, but his behavior and attitudes are VERY consistent.

Stratton's Reddit post is absurd in its claims in so many places and lacks any receipts. TBH, I think it's a poor and obvious attempt at professional assassination, not just to deflect blame from himself. That Chad guy should be fucking embarrassed that he participated in all of this, but between the two posts, it seems obvious that Stratton is a conscious liar who was never dealing with Gordon in good faith at any time in the relationship. Pretty fucking disappointing from iD specifically, but plenty of blame to go around.

id Tech certainly remains capable of stunning visuals, but bored of this franchise personally. Maybe I’ll get it someday on sale like the others. Gonna hold my breath for a Quake 1 sequel.

When they rebooted Doom and I saw the video where they killed a guy and icons when flying out of the baddie like confetti I was not interested in the franchise anymore. Now it just looks like some sorta Warhammer 40k wanna be.

yep yep. I am very much looking forward to this. Maybe it's the fairly straightforward gameplay, which I appreciate in shooters. Perhaps it's just nostalgia. /shrug Either way, so far I have enjoyed every Doom release, and this one looks to continue the tradition.

Thankfully, it looks like it will not be like Doomkey Kong Eternal. I'll wait and watch some gameplay vids after release and hope it is very much like Doom 2016 and not like the "We will force you to jump around and use only the weapons we will give you ammo for if you do special kills" Doom Eternal.
