Official Trailer 2 for DOOM: The Dark Ages shows off more of the next installment in id Software's DOOM series, which expected to launch on May 15th. The clip includes gameplay footage as well as cinematics setting up the story. Which isn't a typo, as this leans harder into a narrative than we're used to, featuring a surprising number of speaking parts for a series that's always been about shooting first and asking questions later. Here's word:
Developed by id Software, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal that tells an epic cinematic story worthy of the DOOM Slayer’s legend. In this third installment of the modern DOOM series, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the DOOM Slayer, in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell.

Doom Eternal's and Doom (2016)'s soundtracks are both industrial with a heavy dose of doom metal mixed in for texture and flavor.

Don't trash thrash metal. I don't think thrash metal is as simple and easy as you imply.![]()

So you guys accuse me of hating everything but you yourself get enraged over the silliest shit like who does the trash metal for a fucking simpleton DOOM game?!? wat?!?![]()
Like, who the fuck even cares? They could let AI generate the trash metal or hire a high school band. Or let me do it. I could mash some strings, too, and you couldn't even tell a difference (OK, maybe a minor one).

I have not heard anything even remotely close to the genius of Mick Gordon in any of the trailers yet. Messing up their relationship with him is the biggest L id has taken in its history. Makes me question whether to get it. If Mick Gordon did the soundtrack it would be a 100% day one buy for me.
Well, at least it has a good soundtrack.
I did not know about that so I went looking for info and found Gordon's response here. I have no reason to disbelieve what he has written. Given he "has the receipts" as the kids say, I am far more inclined to believe his side of the story than what Marty Stratton posted on Reddit.
iD, Bethesda, and Zenimax fucked up in a colossal way and, instead of being men of ethics, they chose to act like spoiled toddlers.
That makes it very easy for me to never buy this game.

id Tech certainly remains capable of stunning visuals, but bored of this franchise personally. Maybe I’ll get it someday on sale like the others. Gonna hold my breath for a Quake 1 sequel.

The last two Doom games were mildly entertaining but I've no inclination to return to either of them after initial completion. This one is going to be a wait-for-sale for sure.

Doom Eternal was 100% perfect for me so I will be there day -2 even though it seems to take a step back from the ultra fast jet fighter gameplay 😛

Flo wrote on Apr 21, 2025, 11:23:Thankfully, it looks like it will not be like Doomkey Kong Eternal. I'll wait and watch some gameplay vids after release and hope it is very much like Doom 2016 and not like the "We will force you to jump around and use only the weapons we will give you ammo for if you do special kills" Doom Eternal.
