Star Citizen/Squadron 42 Free Fly

The Roberts Space Industries Website reveals that another "fee fly" period is underway for Star Citizen/Squadron 42, the dual space games being developed thanks to a crowdfunding program that immediately spiraled out of control. As in the past, this offers a select roster of spacecraft to test fly in the alpha to see what 13 years and over $800 million gets you these days. The posts about the free fly are very economical with words, but it sounds like this includes more of the game than previous such sessions:

Take off into the expansive Star Citizen MMO universe for free from now until April 28!

Race through combat zones, salvage ships lost to pirate turf wars, mine distant asteroids, haul vital supplies to every corner of Human space, and so much more in the year 2955.

There's no time to fix basic functionality like that. They need to design more ships to sell.

You're correct. My memory of theyarecomingforyou is that he was an adamant supporter for years and defended every "this is a scam" thread we used to have and thus creates a memory bias on it. Zealot isn't the most correct word but it's still fun to poke him for it.

So, going back to what I said about thinking he was a grifter—I've changed my mind. At this point, I don't think Star Citizen is a long con. It's more like a descent into madness. Roberts seems less like a scammer and more like a man utterly consumed by his quest to create the perfect space game—no matter how long it takes, or how much it costs.

I'd say he is 100% a grifter. He has lied so many times it is not even funny. There are tons of infamous quotes and he absolutely did give concrete release dates in the mid 2010s that have all been missed by a DECADE this year/next year.
That's not an innocent mistake. You can miscalculate by a few months, maybe a year, but when it's a decade, then you know the guy was lying his ass off and simply trying to dangle the carrot in order to squeeze more $$$ out of gullible fools.

Or weird stuff, like for the first two or three years, he was often on various streaming formats with Sandi Gardiner and they pretended to just be professional colleagues while they were already married and kept it a secret.

I don't think that Roberts is consumed by any quest here. He must be insanely rich at this point and he is rarely seen anymore in public (CIG YouTube channel etc.). He writes the occasional Letter of the Chairman (if he even writes them himself) and that's pretty much it. No one knows if he is just casually supervising it all from a yacht somewhere nowadays.

I do believe that he initially (2011/2012) might have had somewhat honest intentions (the 2014 release date was always bullshit, of course, and he knew it) but when the money piled in like crazy and when he, with the help of Sandi (she had a history in marketing and maybe even a degree, though that latter part is disputed IIRC), figured out the gamer psychology (FOMO, carrot dangling etc.) and knew all the buttons he had to push to keep the money train rolling, he slowly fell to the dark side of the sleazy scumbag.

I used to think he was just a grifter. But back then, he was under the watchful eye of a publisher—first at Origin, then later at Microsoft. Digital Anvil was Roberts' studio, built to create Freelancer. With the game showcased at Microsoft's GameStock event, the media leaned into the ambitious features Roberts had promised—like a dynamic economy and expansive space gameplay—but there were already concerns about the state of the graphics and whether the team could actually deliver those features.

At E3 1999, Roberts announced Freelancer would launch by fall 2000. But in hindsight—and knowing how he operates—it seems the project ran aground trying to cram in too many features. At E3 2000, the developers pushed the release date to the end of 2001. Roberts later admitted that the game needed far more funding to realize his grand vision—something only a massive company could provide. That's when Microsoft stepped in and bought Digital Anvil, and shortly after, Roberts left the company. Microsoft then told the remaining team to scale down the project's scope and focus on completing something that was actually doable.

Freelancer ended up being the spiritual predecessor to Star Citizen, complete with all the same overpromises and missteps. The big difference now? Roberts has everything he didn't have then: unlimited funding, unlimited time, unlimited scope, and a community with seemingly unlimited patience.

Love it some more, make it $75 per year or even per month and it will happen! Really! Definitely! Some day! BELIEVE! And give all that you got.

Just kidding, please don't. Use your money to do something good for your family, yourself, people you like. This would be $75 well spent.
