Out of the Blue

Honest Trailers - Tombstone (thanks Ant). I'm glad they love this like I do. It's much more of a traditional western than the more modern variety that I generally favor. But what a tremendous cast and what a fun time! I feel the same way about Silverado. They're both loving recreations of the kind of horse opera that originally gave rise to the genre that remains entertaining (if not historically accurate) from beginning to end. Definitely time for me to give this one a rewatch.

I'd say Unforgiven was sort of the opposite. Deconstructing the mythos of the lone gunfighter, street duels, and all that. In some ways I consider it the ultimate coda to the genre.

Around here it's a big no no, you enter a home, you remove your shoes.
Now I can understand at work and at school, but at home... why would anyone do this?

I actually bought a pair of shoes 'just' for inside my home.

Pretty much what others have said.

As I get older the soles of my feet are getting thinner and walking on hard floor feels like walking on rocks.
Since I've done this, my corns and calluses are going away.

And my cats have too many toys and they can feel like D4s when I step on them.

Am I the only one who has been to someone's house that had a kid's countless sharp little legos scattered around the floors? Bare feet and those things are not a good mix.

On the other hand, I used to live in a house with white carpets, and the house was surrounded by fallen berries from the trees. No choice there.

I re-watched bits of Tombstone and was sort of shocked to finally recognize that the Johnny Ringo actor was the guy who played Reese in Terminator and Hicks in Aliens. That psychotic gleam in his eye transforms him pretty well.

Before I hurt my back, socks. I found slippers to be too hot, and they made my feet sweat. After I hurt my back, indoor shoes that don't get worn outside. Socks on my hardwood floors cause me to get pain spikes in my lumbar region. That's my reason.

When I was living more rurally, we had to be kinda manic about the "no shoes indoors" thing. When you are working out in the horse manure, it's not good to be walking those same shoes inside, you know?

Put me in the socks only when indoors camp. I tried slippers a couple of times, but my feet always sweated in them.

Most of my house is tile, and uncomfortable on bare feet. I have well padded slippers I cruise around the house in usually. If I lived in a colder climate, I could definitely see "room shoes" for inside.

Yep. I can comfortably eat one meal between 1400 and 1600 and be fine until the same time the next day. Doesn't matter how active I am either that day or the preceding day. Which, right now, is great as it has cut my grocery bill way, way down.

Yes, I was a 3-meals-a-day dude for the first 35 years of my life. I might skip lunch if busy but I wouldn't skip breakfast or dinner for anything. That went down to 2 meals from 35-45, and now I am down to like half a lunch and a late dinner usually at 51. I tend to snack on fruit and popcorn at times throughout my day as well, and have done that for most of my life.

We did Real Genius the weekend Val passed. It had been on the list forever, but I had been waiting for it to be free somewhere.

It has issues, but fewer than I felt as a kid. I think I partially hated it as a kid because I hated the actor playing Mitch, even though he does it right. Kilmer is great in it. The movie as a whole is ok, some things don't make much sense but most of it works pretty well and is elevated by him.

It's kind of amazing how quickly he went from that to Top Gun, and then how quickly the major roles slowed down.

Beamer wrote on Apr 16, 2025, 13:08:
I still think that, if you remove Kilmer, it's a dull movie with absolutely no accuracy (the real Earp is so far from the legend Earp.)

What's next, you're going to tell me that the representations of Lee Iaccoca, Leo Beebe, Ken Miles, Carroll Shelby and Enzo Ferrari in Ford vs Ferrari may not be entirely accurate? Quick, someone fetch me the fainting couch and the smelling salts! Kidding, of course, but no one watches a movie expecting pinpoint accuracy unless they're watching a documentary.

Earp was known to be something of a propagandist about his earlier life and his wife, Josephine, kept building it after he had passed. It was further propagated by early movies, novels, stories, and even actors of the Western genre in the early days. Tombstone is a movie about the legend of Earp and the vendetta ride along with the cast of characters that were involved. In that, it is probably one of the most perfect westerns ever made.

Now my turn for an unpopular opinion:

Top Secret is a terrible movie. I guess a person will like it if they are in to slapstick and sophomoric humor. I watched it recently, having never watched it previously, and I found it a chore to finish.

Real Genius is great. Especially if you understand the CalTech backstory that served as the inspiration for it.
