Max Payne Demo Released

As promised, 3D Realms has now released the playable demo of Max Payne, offering you an opportunity to try out the gritty third-person action game by Remedy Entertainment on the off-chance that you haven't played the full game yet. We have a local copy with mirrors of the 130.8 MB download, which includes a tutorial, the story introduction, and two levels from the full game.

Everyone who's a real 3D Action fan already has the game, so why a demo. If you don't own the game, you're no action fan.

What I find amusing is that Max Payne, while fighting against the evil drug dealers, is a hopeless pill popper.

The irony is thick... like the smell of garlic at an Italian meatball factory.

The game's intentionally cliched, the one liners and fairly steriotypical characters were all intentional

As for your comments about the game being too easy/unrealistic well I've found this to be quite untrue. Half-Life is an unrealistic game, Max Payne is (relatively) realistic, especially when it comes to Max's health.. 1 shot gun blast to the head and you're dead (or very close.) At least this has been my experience and I've played through the game thrice : \

Ok just finished the demo.
The Good = sound and voice acting.
The Bad = Dialog is cheezy as hell. There were more "one liners" then a VanDam, Stalone, and Schwarzneger movie combined. Some of the things MaxPayne said made my girlfriend and I laugh out loud. (and ya I know its supposed to be a campy cop story - but there is nothing "funny" about your wife and kid getting killed so why the cheeze in other areas?) Whats with MaxPays face? That texture is a total joke - it looks like he is taking a crap.

I remember my budies seeing that face texture in game magazines and telling me that they would have dozens of different textures and animations based on the situation. Boy did we hope for too much.

Clipping problems are awefull. I shot a guy (bum on drugs) and he morphed through a chair like it or he wasnt there.

One thing that bugs me is that ALL the game magazine - online or off - are hyping this as the next great thing. And sales are quite good. I hope there isnt a flood of games like this. Hell the darn health meter is so gay its not even funny. 5 shotgun blasts to my head and all I have to do is take a "pain pill" to regain health. Talk about Super Mario Brothers!

Max Payne is an arcade shooter for little kids at best. It had potential though - and yes, the sound is really good imo.

It's not "bullet-time" it's "slow motion" and it's been around since Nintendo NES. It doesn't add to the "action" it detracts from it. And what's up with those cutscenes after each 5th or so kill? "Wow I'm a skilled developer I can make the camera rotate around a bad guy after he dies!" It's so gimmicky and it just makes the game frustrating to play. Without warning, over and over, I was taken out of the action and forced to watch boring cutscenes.

And what's up with this level design? Quake 1 had nicer environments! And don't give me this "but it's realistic" crap - go check out some screens from Soldier of Fortune II and you'll see awesome design in a city. It looks like the levels in Max Payne were created with lego blocks (all square) - I think I saw one psuedo-curve in the entire demo.

Everyone's saying how amazing the graphics are - they're just textures, any fairly up-to-date engine can render textures like that.

And this "impressive story?" It mimmicks virtually every cop movie released in the 80s. At least as much as I saw in the demo...

So anyway, I'm not impressed. I'm glad I waited to buy it, now I can spend my $20 on something more fun. Hell, I had more fun in the Daikatana demo.

Well I never bought the game yet, it's too expensive, costing nearly $50 online. There was a store in my town that was selling it for like $15 but they only had a dozen copies, and sold out in 1 hour... I got there late. >Sigh<

I do like this game, and I'm seeing kudos from everyone. Seems most of the folks on here are old school jaded gamers who bore easily. I can understand that. But still this is one great game. One thing I can see is there's no way this could be made into a multiplayer game with out removing bullet-time. Otherwise people will think the game is always laggy ...how ironic.

Found it!

under the mods section.

It doesn't look like it can be turned on and off, which is a shame.

I got the demo downloaded about 2 hours ago and played around in it for 30 minutes. What Im thinking is that if past 3rd person shooters were like this, we would all like them. Most likely you played something like Tomb Raider with it's lack of good game play? This is NOT that game! This game really reminds me of Resident Evil, but without the static camera angles. Max Payne, in my opinon, is a 3rd person shooter done right.

Where can I download the 1st person mod?

Can it be turned on and off in play?

I don't know any Max Payne fan sites, apart from www.planetmaxpayne.com, which didn't take too much gray matter to guess, but it seems rather out dated with much pre-release stuff (look at their weapons section for example - it says there is little info yet, but more should be releaved at E3) and the files section only has the 1.01 patch.

Xain

I have to agree to a certain extent, but third person is the only way to go sometimes. Hand to hand combat for example just does not work well in first person. It feels good to beat the crap out of a target, but it feels better to see it all and do it with style (i.e. Rune or Oni)! I like the theatrical effects third person games add to enhance the value of being in that view, but even I got a bit bored with the "Bullet Time" effect in Max. Too much of a good thing, you know. I think I'll give that First Person mod a try.

This is why I haven't bought it - I've always hated 3rd person games (although I've never really given them a chance). I didn't know about this mod though - I'll have to check that out.

Im sorry but this game begs for 1st person. The 1st person mod doesnt seem to work for the demo but people say its cool for the retail version. 3rd person perspective is just so boring and lame. Its like watching a 5 inch tall GI JOE character run around and do flips and jumps.

Sorry but this game is only worth it if you find it for less then $10 in the bargin bins. Thanks god for the demo. Almost blew $19.99 at EB to buy it.

Great sound and decent voice acting though.

Ya that would be a good idea. But creative thinking like that doesnt exist for demos. When was the last time a demo offered a glimpse of the game "without" show actual game levels and stuff that you would have to slog through all over again - if you bought the game.

Shame. Im downloaded the demo now, but from what people say, the game is "ok" if you dont expect much and find it in the bargin bin. EB is selling it for $19.99 already here in Seattle. That seems about right since everyone says that game is repetitive and quite short.

I kinda wish it were a prequel of sorts, showing off the gameplay while adding additional gameplay for those who have already bought it.
