Marathon is expected to launch on PC and consoles on September 23rd, putting Bungie's extraction shooter revival head-to-head with the the planned release of Borderlands 4. This was revealed shortly ago on Twitch, where a live presentation is still underway as of right now. In addition to the launch date and details about gameplay, the stream also unveils plans for alpha testing, saying it begins on April 23rd, directing interested players to the Marathon Discord for details on how to participate. There's also a separate new Gameplay Overview Trailer with a look. Here's the description:

From the creators of Halo and Destiny comes Marathon, a team-based extraction shooter. Choose your Runner and scavenge the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV for fortune, power, and answers to Tau Ceti's secrets.

Closed Alpha Test starts April 23, 2025.

This game looks awful to me and I love Escape From Tarkov.

It looks like a mix of "The Cycle Frontier", Call of Duty Warzone and Destiny but none of that appeals to me except how the ADS and shooting works.

The Cycle Frontier: Extraction shooter which had the exact same inventory system and normal/magic/legendary coloring of good items, it was also cartoony graphics and vibrant. Honestly it was a well done game that just failed.
Call of Duty Warzone: The movement and speed of this looks like it's supposed to appeal to that crowd. It doesn't look like it's as audio based as The Hunt Showdown and Tarkov.
Destiny: looks like the same gunplay that made bungie famous.

Watched an hour of the streamer streams on twitch and all I could think was "This is going to attract the worst toxic fanboys"

The original Marathon was a noteworthy milestone for two reasons:
1) Being a FPS game for Mac
2) Using logs to tell the story/provide lore

Also:
3) The first FPS to let you look/aim up and down
4) The first FPS to have weapons with an alt-fire
5) The first FPS to let you dual-wield certain weapons
6) a rudimentary physics system (entities had mass and could be moved with explosions, leading to grenade-hopping years before rocket jumping in Quake became a thing)

"Team based extraction shooter" ... yeah, I'm out. Lol.

Although this game obviously isn't aimed at me or my age group. I think if the right streamers play this shit, they will get millions of players.

PvP extraction shooter? No, thanks. Let's see what the single-player looter shooter offers instead. Although I'm not sold on Borderlands 4 yet.

Borderlands 4... is just going to be more borderlands. will be interesting to see if they move away from the current formula, it is getting kind of tired.

as for marathon, pvpve is a completely different market from a SP game. will be interesting to see if they can get momentum. maybe destiny players, although Bungie has a bad habit of taking away content you have paid for
