I wonder: who made money off these tariff-induced market vacillations? Maybe a certain president and his billionaire buddies who knew before anybody else that this tariff pause would happen? Hmmm... No, of course not.

Autarky worked *so* well for the Soviet Union...and it was not even a complete autarky, either, since they still imported a lot - just not as much as they could have.

Good for American, they finally can make EVERYTHING by themselves. I am looking forward to have their generations to join their cheap labour forces.

The "negotiations" are LIES. Trump need those tariffs to give tax break for the rich. Trump is using "Negotiations" to scam more goodies. Just like Trump scam Ukraine rare Earth materials for PEACE deal. There is NO peace deal. Just like Trump put tariffs on Canada because of Fentanyl. This US administration are all LIES. US gov do not have creditably anymore.

Those jobs are not coming back, doesn't matter what they say. Other people do them in the world because they are shitty jobs, shorten lifespan, toxic materials, minimal wages and so on. You cannot bring those jobs back because nobody will do them and no company will spend the money it takes to build the production capabilities and then motivate people with living wages. Then one day, agreement is signed and poof, all that money spent was just wasted. These new chip factories that will be coming... all the have to do is spend some money on land and wait out the trump term, same as they did last time. Trump gets the headlines he can crow about and nothing else changes.

Did you see his quote the day before yesterday?

"There could be permanent tariffs as well as negotiations."

No, there cannot be, because no US company is going to build a multibillion dollar factory if the second they complete it the tariffs are negotiated away and their competition can build for a fraction of the price again, without having invested a cent.

Latest news: maybe no further tariffs for 90 days. Perhaps, maybe, who knows. The erratic behavior of this unfit for duty mental patient will definitely reassure the markets. Mwahaha

Yea just seen the pause myself. This is so erratic how can anyone plan around the whims of an 80year old sundowning dementia patient?

Agent Orange has already reacted and raised the bar even further to 125% on Chinese goods. Let's see who stops flinging poo first .

For China it is mostly pointless whether the orange monkey keeps raising tariffs. China has a profit margin of ~30% to ~40% on most of their exported goods so the original tariffs of 34% already made the US market unattractive to China. 84%... 125%... it's just numbers to China at this point. The trade is already dead.

It will be interesting if/when China switches to other measures like a blockade of the Strait of Taiwan for starters (before the full scale attack). Dow Jones back at under 10K points. Come on, Donnie. You can do it!

Man, this will make Trump's poor fans happy when the only cheap products that they could afford are gone. Trump could yell at them "Well, just get rich and don't whine" before he leaves Washington for another golf tournament with his rich buddies.

“They have the most imbalanced economy in the history of the modern world, and I can tell you that this escalation is a loser for them … They’re the surplus country,” Bessent said. China’s “exports to the US are five times our exports to China. So, they can raise their tariffs. But so what?”

He's not far off on that, Sure China exports tons of stuff out. But the problem with the tariffs here is that a markup for normal consumers will come. He might not care but places like Walmart certainly will and the people who shop there definitely will. I expect to see shelves empty out of cheap Chinese or hell any cheap goods real soon.

You guys had it too good for too long, time for some Republican given pain.
