No Man's Sky Relics Update

Hello Games announces the launch of a new Relics Update for No Man's Sky, continuing its post-release support for the 2016 space-based action/adventure. Relics digs into the past, adding a paleontology element that allows players to excavate bones and fossils, engage in new battles, and even do a little Jurassic Parking if you're willing to risk the chaos. An Update Trailer features a look at what to expect, including combat with Gorignak that may require you to form some sort of rudimentary lathe. A post on Steam has more on this chance to make your bones:

Since launch, because of the way that No Man’s Sky’s planetary terrain works, No Man’s Sky players have enjoyed being able to dig down through the earth to find buried technologies or other valuable items hidden beneath their feet. From today, players will start to find a whole new category of palaeontological finds - the skeletal remains of alien creatures which used to inhabit these worlds. So terrain manipulators at the ready!

Just as the living creatures which continue to populate the star systems, there is a huge variety of prehistoric bones, in all shapes and sizes, to excavate and collect. It’s up to you how you reassemble them and there’s a lot of fun to be had building ever-more outrageous skeletons to put on display in your bases-turned-museums or share with your fellow Travellers.

That has always been one of your many options, yes... They did nerf the loot you could get from pillaging NPC fleets a few years back, but at the same time finally added a proper outlaw faction with its own array of perks and activities you can find in renegade space stations.

I kind of never enjoyed the survival aspect of the game back when I played it. Found it to be dull, and wished I could play it some other way. Is there a way to play the game where once I get my first ship or something I can just go be space pirate or something?

WoW and EQ both had disastrous launches. Warcrafts first week was pretty much unplayable. It would take 20 seconds to loot a corpse, servers crashed multiple times a day, unplayable lag and account redemption woes.
I got lucky with WoW. I was ignoring it but in the first week of December (after a 23 Nov launch) a buddy of mine was talking to me about it. So, I decided to give it a try. It seemed fine when I loaded it up. Didn't have 20 second loots or issues with the server crashing. Then I lost about 8 years to the game, so maybe not so lucky?

I remember fighting for apples and "something need doing" worker peons in Durotar on launch day.
It was laggy, but playable, at least on my server.

edit: lol, the last time I mentioned this was like 18.5 years ago, and when it actually happened was 20.5 years ago

How are these guys still in business after spending a decade doing nothing but producing free content for this game?

I know, I know, they're a small team. But they could have made NMS2 and made bank with the goodwill they've created.

Funny how these guys have out-Robertsed Star Citizen and Chris Roberts.

I started a new game last year and put in 100 hours or so, maybe time to get back to it.

Bruh, a 4-person team released a $60 game which sold probably 2-3 million copies at launch... That alone would be enough to sustain growing the studio to 45 people and doing nothing else for 10 years. But they went on to sell 10+ million copies by 2022* (a fact they advertised along with the launch of the Nintendo Switch version, which you can bank on providing at least another few million), and ~$20 is still the lowest sale price that's ever been offered. Depending on the average sale price, they may have approached half a billion in total revenue.

They did also release that well-received puzzle game in 2021, though, The Last Campfire.

*Looks like a financial report was released around this same time, showing they had ~$150M in cash reserves as of October '22.

WoW and EQ both had disastrous launches. Warcrafts first week was pretty much unplayable. It would take 20 seconds to loot a corpse, servers crashed multiple times a day, unplayable lag and account redemption woes.

EverQuest also had stability issues, in addition to no instancing so every beetle that dared spawn in Freeport and the common lands had 100+ level 1 paladins fighting for a piece.

Great games, both of them. But not playable at launch.

But my point was free ongoing support. Wow and EQ are funded by subscriptions and paid expansions… not free and significant content updates.

Nah, bro. You should google "objectively vs. subjectively" some time. Easy mistake to make if you use terms without knowing their meaning .

You should take your own advice. Do you think stardew valley is an objectively bad game? What makes you think that NMS is a bad game? By what fucked up criteria does it not meet your expectation of a good game?

"Objectively" refers to facts and verifiable data, while "subjectively" relates to personal opinions, feelings, or perspectives.

Has Sean Murray Apologized Yet? Mar 26, 2025, 16:55

No, he continues to lie about the game and lie about what he said.
I still will not give this game a try.
Sean Murray said that some of the things he said would be in the game in interviews were because they were planned and those interviews were long before the game was released. BS! There are many interviews given after the gold master was made, where he said multiplayer, completely unique worlds with none of them looking close to each other, and many other lies. Gold master means that is the released game, all features are now set in stone for the release.
He even said on Twitter when two people stood in the same spot on day one that there must be problems with the multiplayer servers. Later deleting the tweet and claiming he never made it. Even though people screenshotted it.
Any time he is interviewed he continues to tell lies.
All he had to do was admit his mistakes and apologize, but he chooses to lie instead, and I will not support that.

No Man's Sky, bought it years ago, never played it, probably never will, maybe in VR.
But man, do I respect those devs, and yes, admire them.

They quietly redefine the scope of greatness as much as others slave loudly spreading their smallness of mind and spirit.

As they improve the engine over the course of Light No Fire's development, they're bringing those improvements back to NMS. There hasn't been any paid content outside of the initial launch, but I have no idea if NMS is still earning them money.

I'm buying Light No Fire on Day 1 just as a show of good faith for how well they've treated the NMS community. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but that's not the point. Money talks and how Hello Games' does business worth talking about.
