Heh, decrying most everything game related in post after post is kind of funny for a supposed enthusiast.

So that the little informed don't miss the many excellent or very good offerings by Nightdive:

System Shock 1 Remake, and Turok 1 Remake, both masterfully done.
Shadowman, Turok 2, Powerslave, etc, remasters with QOLs, so good to play them again.

Some few other games weren't that successful but at least you have the chance to run them without troubles, see and decide for yourself.

Just yesterday I bought their "The Thing" that they remastered. It may seem low effort to some; to me it is badass that someone is taking the time reviving these classics, janky/forgotten/niche or not. They aren't the games you would choose to remaster because all you want is to make a quick buck.

Also, don't feed the trolls. And BoP knows I don't mean him.

“You are a part of my grand design. Welcome to my world, insect.” Shodan to me when I was playing SS2 back then.

I need to get and try the SS1 remaster full game. I played its test demo/whatever version like in 2016. It was nice! I didn't like the original DOS version back then too. Controls were so annoying!

Instead of an low effort remaster they should remake it like they did System Shock 1.

If you never played it, Prey is the spiritual successor to the System Shock series, with a much more modern look and feel. So if retro is not your thing, but you want the flavor of what made System Shock special, I urge you to try Prey out. It's $30 on Steam.

I have played it through to the end twice, and looking forward to a third replay eventually. One thing that adds to the replayability is that there are different routes you can take and different orders and ways you can accomplish the primary objectives, which makes for a very different experience each time.

The atmosphere is fantastic, even for an 8 year old game. The game can be scary as hell. It takes place in a giant space station in 2032 in an alternate timeline where we and the Russians colonized near space after Apollo.

The game is gorgeous looking. Some gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUOv6RHrh9o

guys, this is a remaster not a remake...

Which is fine if effort had been put in to make it a quality remaster. This is a low effort cash grab using nostalgia bait as the lure.

I'm looking at it like I do audio remasters. Some are "We took a CD that was pressed from a commercial tape recording which itself was recorded from a vinyl pressing and boosted the bass a bit" while others are "We found the original recording studio masters, cleaned them up and expanded them considerably, and opened up the soundscape tenfold".

I'm not comparing it to anything but itself and the differences that the announcement trailer highlighted.

Despite being the biggest nerd I know, I missed both system shock games! Is now a good time to start? I loved ultima underworld though, where is the remaster/remake of that? Like Total Annihilation, Master of Orion or Myth the Fallen Lords/Soulblighter I've never felt that way in a vidja game since.

I would skip the original, it's kind of on the esoteric side. A lot of people like it though, so what do I know....the (re)master of the original SS1 game is pretty solid, and it's a good game if you love puzzles. SS2 is kind of weird, its a shooter, or more accurately a horror shooter, but with a lot of RPG elements thrown into the mix. I liked it a lot more than the original, its horror atmosphere is a masterclass of how to do horror right in video games, without resorting to gimmicks.

All those games you mentioned though, and the "feeling" of playing them, yeah I know exactly what you're talking about. Very few games have managed to make me feel like that.

It's definitely an upgrade, just not as much as some people hoped for. It's not that bad, just really old. Nothing I'm willing to throw money at anytime soon.

Is this the one that 'we' are supposed to get for free if we preordered the System Shock remake from a few years back ?
I am honestly getting confused by the shear amount of " remake/ remaster/ reimagining" they are putting out at NightDive

Based on what I'm seeing in the videos, I'll buy this in 2 years or so for $10 as an upgrade for my classic SS2.

Beyond a tepid warmover of textures, there in nothing to write home about here, boring. You might as well play the original as original jank is considered vintage, why pay $30 for a coporate cash grab.

Looks like it aged just fine. For an older game it still has that stunning clean look that made it stand out amongst everything else.

Probably a good thing it's a remaster and not a full remake. Remember when someone tried to remake the midwife model and turned them into sexy big titted zombie babes? A light touch is what you want.

I'm sorry... WHAT, specifically, has been "remastered?" I see almost nothing.

Am I missing something?

Some half-assed reworked textures and higher poly models.

Honestly, this feels like a bare minimum effort cash grab.

SS2 was great...26 years ago. Mechanics, graphics, and pretty much everything else has evolved since then.

Though I find it funny that apparently neither Nightdive nor Atari can count. The 25th anniversary would have been last year.

guys, this is a remaster not a remake.. you prolly looked at the Painkiller remake trailer before dis, compared to the old one then ya, looking at this its gonna look like sh1t. and Painkiller imo was always a kinda trashy third-rate Euro import shooter, doesnt compare to greatness of SS2.
