Assassin's Creed Shadows Released

Assassin's Creed Shadows is now available for PC and consoles, offering a new installment in Ubisoft's stealthy action/adventure series set in feudal Japan. The Windows edition is on Steam, and while there's no launch discount, there's the chance to spend extra on the Digital Deluxe Edition and/or a Premium Starter Pack. Reviews started pouring out on Tuesday, and we have a roundup of those. The official Steam Trailer shows off gameplay and enhancements specific to the PC version. Here's the description:

Explore the captivating open world of feudal Japan, from spectacular castle towns and bustling ports to peaceful shrines and war-ravaged landscapes. Adventure through unpredictable weather, changing seasons, and reactive environments.

Become Naoe, a shinobi Assassin, and Yasuke, a legendary samurai, as you experience their riveting stories and master their complementary playstyles. As Naoe, use stealth to avoid detection and agility to confound your enemies. As Yasuke, strike your foes with lethal precision and power.

I started it up yesterday, I got it free with a new CPU some time ago. Graphics are top notch, but I can't shake off the feeling that it is just boring - at least for Yasuke... And the combat is just... I don't know, it feels like some kind of 3d street fighter thing and I can't stand it. If Naoe doesn't play any better, then this game is not for me. I am getting too old for these games.

Valhalla wasn't on Steam day one. It was a UbiSoft Connect and EGS exclusive for over two years. Therefore, Steam player numbers are meaningless in Valhalla's case. It peaked at 15,679 on Steam.

Regarding Odyssey (which actually was on Steam day 1), I'm not sure what numbers you are looking at, but according to SteamDB, which pulls its data directly from Steam, Odyssey had a peak of 62,069 players while AssCreed Shadows has a peak of only 41,412 so far.

As I said in a previous thread, we will have to wait until the weekend for the game to reach its max peak but Odyssey is a 2018 game so Ubi should definitely aim to beat at least Odyssey numbers. So far, the Steam numbers are pretty damn poor though.

people like to hate on ubi but their games do have some incredibly high production values. They feel different from most other games. Combat in this one seems to be harder than normal, and you can make it harder than that on expert. It is a pretty nice formula overall. Just a solid game. Youtubers have come out to shit on them, but at the same time the steam numbers are better than the releases of Valhalla and Odyssey.

The Ubisoft launcher let me start playing just after 8pm for some reason, which was nice. They also give you 20% off in exchange for some of their achievement points, which is better than the discounts I've seen from the key resellers (even my beloved GMG, sorry chaps).

So anyway, I've put about 8 hours in so far and it's been a treat. They start off introducing the black samurai, but you only play him for like 5 minutes before switching to shinobi girl and doing all the proper prologue stuff before eventually being let loose in the world (which took far less time than in some of the other games). No idea when he comes back into the picture... it seems like the story and all main objectives I'm seeing so far revolve around her. And even though she's supposed to be more stealthy, you can still kick ass in open combat if you are able to parry and dodge, same as the rest of the series. It is super bloody and brutal combat, too -- I love painting those wooden/paper building interiors red.

The graphics are lovely but not super amazing; even though some things such as lighting (ray-traced global illumination) have improved compared to Valhalla, others including the character models stick out as somewhat old-fashioned compared to other recent releases. They make up for that by having the budget for mo-capped animations and faces. Still, it should run pretty well for most people, I reckon, and they're supporting all the upscalers now, including frame gen. However, you must use the NVIDIA app or Profile Inspector to over-ride it to use DLSS4 if you want that sweet, sweet transformer model.

Uggg, why the fuck am I stuck with fat a letterbox, like It's stuck on 21:9 on my 16:9 monitor. Sooooo annoying, even more annoying that the fact it was released on the 19th, but I still had to wait until today to be disappointed in Ubisoft because it didn't unlock until 9pm, while technically still the 19th I am old and went to bed.

You went to bed before 9PM?!? Are you 90 or something?!?
