It's not that counter-intuitive: there's such a large pool of developers that many are below average or under so much pressure they're desperate to use anything to expedite the work, even if that brings significant technical debt. Unity is a rather poor game engine, too, and it's using a garbage-collected language - something else that seems counter-intuitive but is just another way to facilitate the work for average developers at the expense of quality. It's all quite consistent.
