World of Warcraft Press Release

I wonder just how many stories related to Blizzard's newly-announced MMORPG World of Warcraft we can pile in a row here? An update to the Blizzard Entertainment Website (thanks Russell Bailey) now has a new splash screen saying "Blizzard Entertainment proudly welcomes you to... The World of Warcraft. Within we find they have posted the WoW press release, which says, in part:
During a press conference today at the European Computer Trade Show, Blizzard Entertainment® unveiled World of Warcraft™, a massively multiplayer, online role-playing game set in the rich fiction of Blizzard's Warcraft universe. Featuring bold 3D graphics and deep, immersive gameplay, World of Warcraft will allow thousands of players to adventure together in this epic world and will provide them with a new, in-depth perspective on familiar lands, former battlefields, and heroes from the legendary universe. In addition, World of Warcraft will introduce new, uncharted territories and foes never before seen by followers of the series.

World of Warcraft takes place four years following the aftermath of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos™, where a great tension has settled over the ravaged world of Azeroth. As the various races begin to rebuild their shattered kingdoms, new threats, both ancient and terrifying, have arisen to plague the world once again. Players must explore the lands of Azeroth, forge fellowships with other players, and build their strength in order to prevail.

"World of Warcraft is our largest undertaking to date," stated Mike Morhaime, Blizzard Entertainment president and co-founder. "We are extremely focused on increasing the scope of the Warcraft universe, giving gamers an incredibly dynamic online gaming experience complete with endless possibilities."

An action-packed combat system delivers fast, furious combat against multiple opponents, while minimizing delays between battles to keep players on the move. A rich, evolving story and questing system will keep players engrossed as the world is regularly updated with new content.

Fully customizable character classes, innovative races, and thousands of weapons allow for a truly diverse gameplay experience that will appeal to both hard-core and novice gamers alike. A simple, intuitive user interface will allow players of various skill levels to easily join the adventure. World of Warcraft also features support for advanced graphics hardware, giving the player superlative graphical enhancements, as well as a sophisticated, massively multiplayer network architecture capable of supporting thousands of players in a world simultaneously.

LOL that's a joke, right?
Blizzard have to be one of the most experienced companies when it comes to online gaming. They've done it since the dawn of time...

I suppose that when you go to buy a brand new car or a new super-dooper computer or some new clothes for summer or whatever, that you'll stand there a piss in the ear of the sales-person how the whole car/computer/clothes thing is getting old and that someone should think of something new...
Why do most people write negative posts about enhancements and refinements (usually for the better) to older products that i'm sure most of you still find great fun and value? Bring it on blizzard! (and Quake IV and AvP2, etc, etc...)

PS. You see very few ppl bitching about Unreal 2. Same shit, different bucket isn't it? Have a nag about that too...

As fun as i am quite sure this game will be,
games with monthly fees just aren't my cup of tea.

Perhaps if Blizzard released a complete game,
minus the constant pocket dunking i find so lame,
with a couple of retail addons over the following years,
then World of WarCraft would be music to my ears.

...or something.

I wonder how long it will take before we see some good-sized shakeout in the MMORPG area; with online Final Fantasy (I'm pretty sure it's persistent), Star Wars, and Warcraft universes coming over the next couple years it really leads me to believe we'll see some weeding...

Sorry Blizzard, I was hoping for a new universe. Right now, it seems to me you just have three properties you're milking to death. The last "new" idea was Starcraft, and that was 1997. Since then, you haven't been able to come up with a new universe to save your life. And the MMORPG market is starting to get too crowded as it is, as the piece of the pie that everyone's fighting over gets smaller and smaller.

Think of something new, dammit!

Reading the press release about its "awsome" gameplay makes it sounds just like D2 with thousands of players in the Warcraft universe. With the appropriate fancy 3D engine. In otherwords no new gameplay...

The Cinematic is typically Blizzard, nicely done.

The gameplay movie is nice, looks like it'll be a fun game.

I wonder what battling dragons or that big tree creature will be like...

Is it me, or does this look very similiar to UO 2. Just the way the characters move and fight, it seems that Blizzard might have borrowed from that system. Does anyone else see it?

I don't know about you, but I get a little nervous when Blizzard deals with servers and stuff.

Better graphics and net code this time, Bliz, please?

Have you looked at the screenshots? Go to the gamespot preview below and look at the gallery (~20-25 ingame shots maybe). I think they look great. Then go look at DAoC screenshots, or Shadowbane screenshots. Call me a Blizzard fanboy (even though I never cared one bit for Diablo 2) but I have all faith that Blizzard can pull this off.

This is the best looking MMORPG so far, the interface is very slick and seems easy to understand and knowing Blizzard it will also be a blast to play.

Sounds oddly like the press release for Diablo II, all those years ago...
