I’d take a guess and say there are two types who complain about it the most: advocates (artists) who are already wealthy, and the struggling artist who wouldn’t get a record deal in the first place. Also keep in mind that Spotify has a tolerable free tier while most of the other popular platforms do not (e.g. Apple Music)

But they do have a third of the market globally, and just over in the US. Upwards of 42% of paid users.
It's like how you can make a video game and decide not to release it on Steam, but will anyone discover it?
