Out of the Blue

Following my problems with FrontPage 2003 during our recent trip to Atlanta, I got a recommendation from long-time friend of the site j.c.f. to look into Expression Web, Microsoft's replacement HTML editor, though this is also discontinued. I messed with it at one point, but dismissed it for some reason I can no longer recall. But after this suggestion I fooled with it again and came away pleased. It's 98% of what I'm used to, and most of the differences quite minor. But it's easier to get, installs cleaner, and has way less clutter. It also feels happier running under Windows 10, as its responsiveness is evidence that FrontPage was laggy on a barely noticeable level. Yesterday I worked out what needed to make the switch and am happily working on my "new" setup. So thank you to j.c.f. for prodding me in the right direction. It also just sounds less eccentric to no longer be working on software that practically qualified for Y2K compliance testing. Maybe not that much, since Expression Web 4.0 is close to 15 years-old, but when it comes to seeming less eccentric, I can use all the help I can get.

It's not 'instant' coffee, but when I was in a place with no local coffee roasters, I found Lavazza beans to be the best I tried out of the mass-market stuff.

The best stuff always comes from the ultra-snobby guy who runs a small shop tucked away in an inconvenient location and can talk for 20 minutes about how everything you've had before in your life is just 'coffee-adjacent' though.

Yes. It was recommended for additional security. Should I change this? I have no problem using the terminal to approve of new installs, though.

If you have no problems with the terminal, leave it as is.

Because that's a coding platform, and I just want a simple, reliable WYSIWYG HTML editor to assist in creating the simple reliable HTML this site runs on.

If there's some direction you'd like to see the site take or some features we could add based on me changing editors, I'm all ears. But otherwise, the fact that my post was all messed up today after a simple in-line upgrade should probably warn against me changing to something with a "steeper learning curve" just because it's newer.

sudo usermod is something that I never expected to type SO OFTEN.
But I like Fedora nevertheless. Damned, it's lightning fast! Next I'll try to get Thunderbird to work on it. No, don't stop me, Thunderbird it will ALWAYS be. I got mails going back to the very early 2000s in my Thunderbird inmail box and I will keep them no matter the cost (or the typing of sudo usermod).

My happy update about my new editor soured when I went to update and found my source code was munged up quite a bit. I was fixing it when MrsBlue arrived and announced lunch was early. Hoping for the best I rushed up to join here after thinking I'd caught all the problems, but obviously that was not the case. Apologies for the mess and thanks for Frans for his fixes.

I'm still optimistic about the change, and am hoping the problem is from some of the search and replacing I did to overcome some of its foibles, and that I'll be able to figure out how to avoid such disasters in the future.

I'm a little surprised you went for another discontinued application. Why not go with something like vscode that has a huge community and extensions for everything? Yes, it will have a bit steeper learning curve, but once you get it, you can use it with just about every language and the editor always works the same way. You can slap on the Live Server/Live Server Preview extension, CSS, Tailwind, Yaml/Toml/Markdown, all the html boilerplate stuff, etc, etc. It even has extensions for various browser debugging, SQL tools, Git integration and everything else you'd need for full stack dev. You can keep it simple (like a FrontPage type app) or customize it like hell. It even includes a free version of Copilot now that will allow you to automate tasks and do 90% of the updates for you
