Crytek Layoffs; Crysis 4 Crisis [Updated]

A post on X from Crytek announces layoffs at the German developer, saying it cut around approximately 15% of its workforce, or about 60 jobs. The announcement says development of the next Crysis game was put on hold in Q3 of last year to focus resources on Hunt: Showdown 1896. That first-person shooter is reportedly still growing, but the company "determined that layoffs are inevitable to move forward." The presumed Crysis 4 remains on hold, and there's no suggestion that this will change any time soon:
Like so many of our peers, we aren't immune to the complex, unfavorable market dynamics that have hit our industry these past several years. It pains us greatly to share today that we must lay off an estimated 15% of our around 400 employees. The layoffs affect development teams and shared services. This has not been an easy decision to make, as we deeply appreciate the hard work of our talented teams. After putting the development of the next Crysis game on hold in 03 2024, we have been trying to shift developers over to Hunt: Showdown 1896.

While Hunt: Showdown 1896 is still growing, Crytek cannot continue as before and remain financially sustainable. Even after ongoing efforts to reduce costs and cut operating expenses, we have determined that layoffs are inevitable to move forward. Crytek will offer affected employees severance packages and career assistance services.
Update: This report originally said 400 jobs were lost, which was the company's headcount before the cuts. Apologies for the error.

Crytek is a German company. You can rest assured that no one is gonna die here in "socialist" Wink Germany. Companies the size of Crytek usually have a "Betriebsrat" (workers' council). The executives must closely cooperate with the Betriebsrat before laying off anyone, explain the reasons for the layoffs and why there are no alternative solutions.

Severance packages are the norm. Social factors are also considered like who is single, who has a family, how old is the employee, how long has he/she been with the company and so on and so forth.

The moment you receive your notice, you have to inform the Labor Office. That will ensure that you receive your unemployment compensation. You will receive ~60% of your last net income as unemployment money.
The duration for which the compensation is paid depends on several factors like your age and how long you have been employed. It ranges from six to twelve months for people below the age of 50. Above the age of 50, it can extend up to 24 months (it's an iterative system and people age 58+ are subject to the full 24 months).

The Labor Office will actively help you find new employment from the moment you send them your notice. You have to show up regularly and talk to a councillor.
If everything goes to shit and you can not find employment and your employment compensation runs out then you're still not fucked. You can apply for basic income or social welfare next which is considerably less than those 60% of your last net income but it will cover all your basic needs (maybe even a little too much in some cases as many people choose to get by on basic income instead of going (back) to work ... a reformation of the system with more "encouragement" to get your ass out of bed is likely coming after the next election which will take place on the 23rd of this month )).

So, yeah, that's how it is in comrade country. Everyone can put away their handkerchiefs. The Crytek folks are in for a pretty soft landing. Sure, it's a bit crap to lose your job but they'll live and if they have decent qualifications (quite likely if you work at a gig of Crytek's size) then it shouldn't take too long to find a new job.
Congratulations on living in an intelligent and caring "comrade country".
Bests for Germany and Europe !

I think there is a difference between "A new game in the series would be cool" and "I WANT A NEW GAME IN THE SERIES NOW!". Thus the use of "clamoring". Which, again, I have yet to see in years at this point since Crysis 3 was released 12 years ago.

It's a shame that union membership has declined so precipitously, hastened along of course by corporations that want workers to be expendable. At least with a union, contracts can be negotiated to include termination benefits for workers who get laid off as a natural course of the business cycle. That can help soften the landing.

I would have welcomed the news of a 4th installment. But if it wasn't gonna bring in the duckets they wanted then so much for that

Nausea issues with FPS games aside, I would have been game for a new Crysis game. "Clamoring" is a strong word though. Everything that came after the original Crysis, including the remasters, was a bit underwhelming. I would call it "morbidly curious", not "clamoring". A newish team working on a new game in the series could bring a fresh take that gets it all back on track. This is me trying REAL hard to be optimistic about anything in this industry right now.

Too soon!!! Okay, not really. But seriously, if all they have is Hunt Showdown, they don't need 4000+ employees. I'm surprised they went this long.

EDIT: Is that right? Because Wikipedia just said that Cryteks entire staff is a little over 400...

The biggest shock for me is that they have over 2,500 employees. How/why? I wonder if CIG will offer them jobs.
