Like so many of our peers, we aren't immune to the complex, unfavorable market dynamics that have hit our industry these past several years. It pains us greatly to share today that we must lay off an estimated 15% of our around 400 employees. The layoffs affect development teams and shared services. This has not been an easy decision to make, as we deeply appreciate the hard work of our talented teams. After putting the development of the next Crysis game on hold in 03 2024, we have been trying to shift developers over to Hunt: Showdown 1896.Update: This report originally said 400 jobs were lost, which was the company's headcount before the cuts. Apologies for the error.
While Hunt: Showdown 1896 is still growing, Crytek cannot continue as before and remain financially sustainable. Even after ongoing efforts to reduce costs and cut operating expenses, we have determined that layoffs are inevitable to move forward. Crytek will offer affected employees severance packages and career assistance services.

Crytek is a German company. You can rest assured that no one is gonna die here in "socialist"Germany. Companies the size of Crytek usually have a "Betriebsrat" (workers' council). The executives must closely cooperate with the Betriebsrat before laying off anyone, explain the reasons for the layoffs and why there are no alternative solutions.
Severance packages are the norm. Social factors are also considered like who is single, who has a family, how old is the employee, how long has he/she been with the company and so on and so forth.
The moment you receive your notice, you have to inform the Labor Office. That will ensure that you receive your unemployment compensation. You will receive ~60% of your last net income as unemployment money.
The duration for which the compensation is paid depends on several factors like your age and how long you have been employed. It ranges from six to twelve months for people below the age of 50. Above the age of 50, it can extend up to 24 months (it's an iterative system and people age 58+ are subject to the full 24 months).
The Labor Office will actively help you find new employment from the moment you send them your notice. You have to show up regularly and talk to a councillor.
If everything goes to shit and you can not find employment and your employment compensation runs out then you're still not fucked. You can apply for basic income or social welfare next which is considerably less than those 60% of your last net income but it will cover all your basic needs (maybe even a little too much in some cases as many people choose to get by on basic income instead of going (back) to work ... a reformation of the system with more "encouragement" to get your ass out of bed is likely coming after the next election which will take place on the 23rd of this month )).
So, yeah, that's how it is in comrade country. Everyone can put away their handkerchiefs. The Crytek folks are in for a pretty soft landing. Sure, it's a bit crap to lose your job but they'll live and if they have decent qualifications (quite likely if you work at a gig of Crytek's size) then it shouldn't take too long to find a new job.

Layoffs are a management failure. They price of their failure should be layoffs for them but that hardly ever happens.
I would push that blame above management to the executive level, but the sentiment is the same. There isn't any accountability for people losing their livelihoods.

Was anyone clamoring for Crysis 4? I've certainly not read anything about it nor anyone expressing desire for another.

Too soon!!! Okay, not really. But seriously, if all they have is Hunt Showdown, they don't need 4000+ employees. I'm surprised they went this long.
EDIT: Is that right? Because Wikipedia just said that Cryteks entire staff is a little over 400...
