Duke Nukem Consoles Take Forever?

Take-Two talks Duke Nukem on GameSpot is a report on the upcoming console ports of Duke Nukem Forever, stating that "As expected, Duke Nukem Forever, the long-anticipated first-person shooter from 3D Realms, will not ship in Q4 of this year and is currently on a vague 2002 release schedule." There is no word on how, if at all, the PC version is affected, but word is the game will appear on the PlayStation 2, Xbox and, possibly, the GameCube. The story also describes the involvement of N-Space, and their upcoming PS2 game Duke Nukem: D-Day. Thanks Shacknews for the tip.

Here's what a 3DR employee had to say about upgrading to the awesome U2 particle system (the one that allows you to do insane stuff, like shooting bullets through smoke, and the smoke disperses, and an awesome flamethrower.)

"No. Our particle system utterly kicks Epic and DE's ass in every way."

THOSE ARE SOME STRONG WORDS! I really think that this game will blow everyone away when it's released.

will a game such as duke nukem forever, which has been in development for 3+ years (at least) be able to break even when it is released?
games nowadays are no longer developed in bedrooms of the early 80's, development teams are quite big, but as games slip and slip, they add to the cost of developement. nobody works for nothing, but this length of development all adds to costs, which is not a problem if the game (product sic!) is released within a short period of time 18- 24 months. but duke nukem has been a long time comming and has cost a lot of dosh, will it be able to break even, let alone make a profit?

how may copies will it need to sell to break even= quite a lot i'd imagine..... millions!

even though the unreal engine is getting more and more outdated, Duke will still kick some ass when its finally released. i mean, the original duke 3d with the shiotty build engine is still fun! have you guys seen the trailer, cause it looks amazing!

DNF is talking longer than TF2 is taking. Does anyone really give a rats ass about this vaporware? Let me know when these damn games will be released, otherwise I don't care.

Like the black disaster that was (and still is, despite all the press) Anarchy Online? What a damn joke. I was one of AO's "beta" testers... more like I was an alpha tester, and the crap product they released and people are playing today is more like the beta. And to think that it's managed to somehow get a following... more than likely, a following of people that know how to exploit and cheat their way through every bug in the game and not even bother to report it until AFTER they've exploited it.

That's why I've been patient with 3D Realms on this one. I'm confident in their ability to make a finished product that will be a good game. No matter if it takes "forever"...

Maybe they should think about releasing it before it's done...like everyone else does

#7,

I seem to remember from a Warren Spector interview that Deus Ex PS2 was actually running faster than its sister version, which embarrassed them no end. I guess it's just a matter of working with what you've got, even if it is a double-digit RAM (for shame!)

I've been trying to not think about Duke4, but I expected it to come out this year. The news of it's further delay is both funny and sad.

At least this gives them time to switch engines again, maybe MythII this time? Or how about Crystal Space?

I wonder if DNF-PS2 is having the same sorts of problems that other Unreal-based PS2 games seem to be having -- notably framerate issues and memory complications due to the PS2's 32 MB system ram.

As I recall, the Deus Ex (PC) logs regularly reported 100 MB of system memory being used by the game.

Those are just delays of the console ports. The PC version is still due out when it's done which should be soon. Though 2002 is only a few months away.
