Out of the Blue

Well the weather forecast around has wavered between dire and very dire for a couple of days now. There's a severe winter storm warning in effect, and the snowfall estimates range between six and ten inches, depending on when you check. It's very likely this will have no impact here, but I do like to give a heads-up when the predictions include the possibility the BlueTower will lose power, which is certainly the case now. Fingers crossed.

Except despite common media making fun of duck and cover, it can save you.
Not if you are in the shock-wave blast zone. But far beyond that is a zone of intense ionizing radiation "wave". Ducking and getting as low as possible will put more material between you and the epicenter of the event and greatly reduce radiation exposure. If you know it is going to happen, it is a great idea.

Makes sense if you weren't in a school near a high value military base.

Humans Are Evolving Before Our Eyes on The Tibetan Plateau - ScienceAlert.

At the end of the cold war and nuclear war scare in the 1980s, there used to be t-shirts and buttons with a mushroom cloud and a freakily mutated person and the words "Mutate Now! Avoid The Rush!"

They used make school kids watch these old 1950s films about how to duck and cover and hide under desks if a nuclear bomb landed. Complete with accompanying song jingle.

I remember those "safety" videos. I had to watch them except them were on actual film with a projector. I had a science teacher once remark "You get under the desk so you are close enough to kiss your ass goodbye. That isn't going to save you from anything."

That promo company is as good as out of business after that idiocy I imagine.

Humans may be evolving in Tibet but a lot of them are sure as hell devolving in America and a lot of the rest of the world too.

That's really neat about the hamster wheel, even a frog getting in on that action, wow.

The UMASS "technicality" reminds me that recent story of the kid that won a PS5 at Charlotte Hornets game and then they took it from him once he was out of public view. I also remember the Don Calhoun story. For those who weren't glued to a tv set during the Jordan era of the NBA, Calhoun was supposed to win 1 million dollars for a half court shot and the insurance company refused to pay on a technicality. His story actually has an insteresting end that I will not spoil. I encourage a google or youtube search.

Anyway, it just seems like such a stpid thing to do. The sponsors of these contests should just consider the money/prize gone as soon as the contest is arranged. That will lower the prize money overall maybe, but its such a bad look to refuse to pay on something done so publicly. Particularly if the prize is a mere drop in the bucket for the organization responsible. That recent story with the kid in Charlotte and the PS5 was particularly puzzling. A "skit that missed the mark" was what that multi-billion dollar organization had to say about a mere 500 dollar prize they gave to a child in front of the entire stadium audience.....and then took it back as soon as the camera was off him. What did they think would happen at that point? In this age of social media did they think they wouldn't get called out for that? What a stupid self-inflicted wound for the PR department of that team.
