WB Rumors: Wonder Woman in Trouble; Rocksteady's Batman Plans

A report on Bloomberg (may require registration or subscription) looks at what's going on behind the scenes at Warner Bros. Games after what it describes a "dismal year" for the division marked by the failures of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, and MultiVersus. This includes still-unconfirmed revelations that development of a Wonder Woman game at Monolith is struggling, and may not be released after already costing the company over $100 million. On the other hand, there's also word that Arkham trilogy developer Rocksteady will develop a new Batman single-player game, but this is way off in the future. There's also mention of a possible new Game of Thrones game, but those just pop up like weeds. Here are the rumors on the two superhero properties:
It has now been more than seven years since the studio’s last game. An initial version of Wonder Woman tried reimagining the Nemesis system with the game’s namesake heroine befriending enemies, but that idea has since been tossed out in favor of a more traditional action-adventure game. Now, Wonder Woman’s fate remains in question, according to the people familiar with the business, because of challenges following the changes in Monolith’s leadership and issues surrounding the game’s technology.

Ultimately, fans didn’t have the appetite for another online shooter, and (Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League) tanked. Rocksteady gave up on plans for content after the first year, ending the story with a hasty animation that backtracked on some of the narrative’s most controversial aspects, revealing that the superheroes thought to be dead were in fact clones. Now, Rocksteady is looking to return to Batman for a single-player game, but according to people familiar with the timeline, the new project is years away from landing.

Evilgrin . I didn't expect that comment to pass muster. But c'mon, you gotta admit that was kinda funny right? (hypothetical question)

A promising idea after the first excellent Wonder Woman movie.

But after the idiotic cringeworthy movie sequel (where she barely appears and mostly to be foiled), destroyed the chances of a saga, the public interest died.

And in this times of retribution and demeaning womanhood and mostly not noticeable pushback, a female hero ? Confused

I have always preferred characters that age, live lives, and then pass on...leaving a legacy that is built on. I remember reading the Marvel Universe comic series as a teenager and the biographies of the various characters were often best when there was an evolution over time.
Characters that are more like gods and either through story or popularity seem to live through everything forever just get tired.

Superman, Wonder Woman...but also characters like Deadpool and Wolverine...it's not that they can't be enjoyable, I just wish the powers that be didn't recycle them so much. Both DC and Marvel have so much and they just keep reaching into the same barrel. A barrel labeled "Batman" way too often if you ask me.

All of this is to say...I am very bitter that there isn't a ROM: Space Knight series or movie. so there.

Warner has been in trouble since their repeated botched efforts to reproduce the MCU. The DCCU is a complete mess that extends to DCCU themed video games.

About the Wonder Woman game, this is the team that made the Shadow of Mordor/War games. They have been at it for over 7 years now with a really lame, years old trailer as the only thing to show for it. Back then, super hero games were red hot on the market, even if they ended up mostly sucking. I still have no idea how their patented Nemesis System is a good fit for the game unless they wanted to blur the line between good and evil a lot. Right now they are probably feeling really stupid about paying for the WW IP usage. It was probably dictated by the asshats at WB who seems to be trying to become more Ubisoft-like these days.

I'm sorry, but whoever's running the show over there and making design decisions needs to be fired. First off, nobody asked for that Suicide Squad game. The Batman series has been a hit with it culminating with Arkham Knight. Why not continue when you have a winning series/formula? You just got bored and decided to risk it with something else? I know companies do that, but they could have really stuck more to the Arkham vibes to play it safer. Instead they really took a gamble. I wasn't even aware they were looking into making a Wonder Woman title. I'm not sure how it would come out, but again, why throw all these new ideas and risks that come with a tremendous price tag? Mean while, one of your bread and butter titles you let take a back seat.

Ubi Warner Bros. I'm thinking is getting bad ideas from all around, above and below. Kill the Justice League suffered from poor execution and bad re-designs that they let happen. I don't blame them 100% for that game's failure from what's been said about the dev team but they sure didn't help it. I guess they believe like Sony does that throwing more money at something will fix it.

Along the lines of, "why did you stop making this game series?" is the one that gut punched me the most: Jake Solomon not wanting to make XCOM3 because he was tired of XCOM. His whole shtick was that it was a childhood fantasy that he got to remake it and then he promptly ran out of ideas after 2 games?! He pulled off the extremely improbable successful remake of a cult classic (meaning rabid, insatiable fans) bringing it to a much larger audience only to fuck off.

Can we just get another Mad Max game from Avalanche, please? Thank you.

Not sure where this comment came from, but I'm so down for it. The original was such a sleeper hit. With today's graphics, I would take nearly the same game. Just update a few mechanics and you got my money again.

WB published the Mad Max game and they are in the title. Thus it spurred my request for another Mad Max done by Avalanche.

Oooh right. Forgot that they did. I knew about Avalanche and was like, they're not tied with Batman, lol. The only other common factor there was the fight system. Mad Max definitely borrowed from the Batman series on that. Granted, it had more of a WWE style going for it, lol.

Why not a Flash game? It's not like Barry is super strong or brilliant. Playing a speedster in CoH was a ton of fun. Slotting all your powers with more speed just for that edge was a hoot. I had a speedster in CoH I named Goggles Pizano - after the Flintstones character. He was a hoot.
flash as a concept always seemed stupid to me. so you can slow time. You still have to do the work that it takes to do whatever you are doing while time is slowed. in other words circling the globe will take just as much effort no matter how you do it, regardless if other people saw it as instant.

Wons have a plane when she can fly

Diana couldn't fly until George Perez took over the book back in the '80s. Hence, the plane.

Yeah, they may as well have made a Superman game. Batman, at the end of the day, is still just a man and has all the same vulnerabilities as the rest of us. There isn't much that Supes and Wons can't handle that's thrown at them. There are a lot of DC characters that aren't nigh on virtual gods that would be more conducive to an action game like the Bats series where progression would feel a lot more meaningful.

And why the hell does Wons have a plane when she can fly? That's like average people who walk getting a mobility scooter even when they don't really need one.

An interesting idea to subvert the Nemesis system to make the goal befriending enemies but I don't know if that would've worked with a Wonder Woman game. Maybe one of those gacha games?
Usually characters are one of the prizes in gacha games. Which characters from WW lore would be available to win and play/add to team? Justice League? I bet a variety of weapons, armor, and outfits could be available for sure.
