Out of the Blue

We have some more snow, sleet, and ice surrounding the BlueTower today, as the winter in the Northeast is living up to its nasty reputation. I knew this was coming thanks to some aches in my elbow. I find this odd. Decades ago I had arthroscopic knee surgery and this left me immediately able to predict weather changes. But this ability quickly went away, never to return. The car accident that broke my elbow was way more than three years ago and the impact of the weather on it was spotty at best. But it seems to be "better" (worse?) about this as time goes on, so maybe age is playing into it. It's not a terrible discomfort when it strikes, but it does have me reaching for an elbow sleeve when it happens, and I'm wearing one more often now than I did in the first year after the accident. I guess I'll just hope it doesn't blossom into actual discomfort.

I'm with you Jivaro, if I lived there I would be miserable when outside a lot of the time. You also have to consider people who were born and grew up there. It is amazing how well the body can climatize itself to persistent conditions. My sister has been there about 25 years now give or take.

That is an X-Men level mutation for a place like Phoenix. I mean, I know it has health drawbacks and I don't mean to make light of them. I just was so miserable and thus the idea of a human body actually preferring it seems so alien to me. Then again, many people move to Phoenix and Florida exactly because they have health conditions (often age related) where the weather makes it more pleasant to live. My previous employer serves about 1000 patients down there, all medicare age and higher, and nearly none of them are AZ natives.

They sound tougher then me. Your sisters must be sheltering in place for most of August and September when the humidity can be betwen 50 to 70 points though right? At least I know I was. The dry heat at 100-125 degrees was bad enough, but add that 55-65 point August monsoon humidity and I was quick to fuck off right back to California. February was the only month I could walk around Phoenix comfortably. The shortest month in the year.
There is a "wet" season, but I didn't think it was in August. In fairness, my sister does have something "helping" her -- she suffers from Raynaud syndrome, which causes reduced blood flow. Her hands can be cold to the point of turning purple in temperatures I wear t-shirts and shorts in. So, she really only feels comfortable in temperatures which are starting to get on the warm side for most people. I think she sets her AC in the summer for 85? I'd have to check with her. But I also think she doesn't bother with it unless it over 100.

Not with the humidity, but in someplace like Phoenix, where it can be over 100 but with low humidity for many weeks there are people (one of my sisters included) who don't really mind the heat.

How is it possible that the CGI dinos in that Jurassic World Rebirth trailer look worse than the ones in the original movie?

One was directed by Spielberg to create an awesome spectacle, the other is yet another go at the franchise teat to make money.

Though, I'd love to see an Alien and Jurassic Park crossover. A xenomorph raptor hybrid? That would be awesome.

In my opinion it is the fact that the original Jurassic Park had Steven Spielberg, along with visual effects titans Stan Winston, Phil Tippet, Dennis Muren and Industrial Light & Magic all on their A game. Plus a healthy mix of different practical effects alongside CGI resulting in only around 6 minutes of actual CGI.

Easy solution. More chili = less chilly?

Yeah, we got dumped on pretty good last night. It was kind of a shock to wake up to a winter wonderland.

And as someone who also broke their arm in three places at the elbow I feel your pain. It took a good 5 years at least before it was really back to normal. I used to wear a sleeve for it as well and it definitely helped. So I imagine it'll get better but you still have a ways to go yet. It's just a bad place for a break.

no snow here at the moment. It has been hovering around 0 all week. Pretty warm for the season. Ive lived in Cyprus and Kenya. Cyprus was hot all year round, 40s in August, late teens during winter. Only two seasons really, hot and dry and not as hot and dry.

Kenya was hot or wet, pick one and stick with it for months.

I am too! I'm one of those people that prefers too hot to too cold.

I just don't know how welcome I'd ever feel in the south. There's yankees and there's damn yankees, and I'm pretty sure it's a difficult struggle for folks from New York City to get out of the latter category.

Depends where in "the south" you settle. Austin is still pretty chill. Dallas might be.

But I agree with Jivaro. I have lived in very hot areas and very cold areas. I will take cold any day of the week because that is much easier to thermally regulate as a member of an endothermic species. When it is 105 outside with 90% non-precipitating humidity, you can't cool off because the sweat doesn't evaporate. It just soaks your clothing and they stay wet. So now your clothes are heavier and stick to you, so you sweat more. The AC will run 24/7 for at least three months if not five now with climate change making summer longer down here. It is February 6th and I have had the AC on for three days so far. The AC. In February.

I'm still cleaning out the house and I ran across some pictures. One of them is of me, many years ago, standing in snow up to my knees wearing a pair of boxer shorts, a pair of unlaced boots, and an open parka smoking a cigarette in the dead of Canadian winter. I wasn't even fat then so no extra insulation. Then again, when it was in the 20s here a couple of weeks back, I was running around in shorts and a hoodie while everyone else around was bundled up like they were going on an Arctic expedition.

Cold is definitely my jam.

I was this way once. Then I lived in Phoenix AZ. I would never go back to temperatures like that willingly. Give me the cold anytime, I can always put on more layers. With the heat, and particularly if it gets humid as well, you get to a point where you are just hot and there is nothing you can do unless you are just gonna sit in a bucket of ice all day. Seven years in Denmark after my 5 years in Phoenix only reinforced my opinion. Dealing with that cold was so much easier then Phoenix's heat.
