New Battlefield Footage

Something that went unnoted in our story about Battlefield Labs from this morning is the accompanying video. It features discussion of the testing program from the developers, but it also includes some "pre-alpha" footage of the next Battlefield game. This comes near the very end of the clip where there are flashes of chaotic combat in a modern urban environment with widespread environmental destruction. Word is:
Four studios across the globe. One brand-new visionary team: Battlefield Studios. This global united front combining 20+ years of Battlefield experience with the best emerging talent in our industry is hard at work to shape the future of our franchise. Our ambitions are big, so we’re going bigger to deliver the best experience for our players.

The 2042 launch was a disaster, since they didn't address the issues from the open beta they did 4 months before launch. That's what this whole "labs" thing is about: getting enough testing and feedback to have a solid game out of the gate.
This is so common with games for a while now: have a late stage beta and not allow enough time to change or iterate things. They only use it as a bug fix/game break test. It stems from game companies being afraid of bad first impressions as we have become a predominantly read the headline only/first impression society. I like the idea of their approach but it requires strong, but not inflexible, guard rails to weed out truly bad ideas. Usually the result is ignoring the player base too much or designing by comity where no one is happy.

I wonder if I can even get in, when I went in to sign up last night at about 8pm best coast time, I had only 280k people ahead of me... I didn't wait; I went to bed.

Sooooo, lets get the player base to test our next game and call it a new feature? So EA just rebranded their typical launch week bugs to Labs and called it a win?

I played thousands of hours of Battlefield 4 (and BF3, 1942, desert combat before that). But after BF4 I only played the beta's. And those didn't hook me so I never played the full releases.
Hopefully this Battlefield hits my old school BF spot again.

What's the obsession with 'modern' warfare, like it was fun the first time, but something new would be nice. Besides 'real' modern warfare now involves strapping all kinds of things to a 15 dollar drone and flying it into the weak points of a 4.3$ million dollar tank like the Abrams or T-90. I.e. what people 'imagined' modern war to be with near peer opponents is scary as fuck.

The 2042 launch was a disaster, since they didn't address the issues from the open beta they did 4 months before launch. That's what this whole "labs" thing is about: getting enough testing and feedback to have a solid game out of the gate. Also, the hero model wasn't very popular, so they might point to that. Personally, I like that model, but I could see why people wouldn't. A year after launch is when I picked it up, and I thought it was fantastic. It's probably my favorite since BF2. Yes, I know many people consider BF4 to be the gold standard, and it was great, but this one clicks with me better.

Plot twist: the entire trailer is in-game footage.

Jokes aside, all of the game footage looked like BF2042. And given that it's yet another modern military shooter, it won't look or play substantially differently. It sounds like the major change will be replacing the current "hero" character system with a more traditional class system.

I just hope it works with or has it's own server customization (Portal) that I can add my own bots, choose maps, load outs etc.

At 49, I don't really have time to play online any longer but I appreciate being able to play a few rounds on various maps against bots.
