PC Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Released

If your Spidey sense is tingling, that's because the Windows edition of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is now available the Epic Games Store and Steam, offering PC gamers the chance to swing into the latest chapter in the series that was previously only available on PlayStation 5. Just yesterday Sony announced that it is dropping the requirement of a PlayStation Network account to play this on PC, ending what many consider a barrier to entry. There are incentives to login to the PSN, though, so everyone can decide for themselves what the tradeoffs are. Here's the PC Launch Trailer showing off Nixxes' port of Insomniac's game, and here's more:

Spider-Men Peter Parker and Miles Morales face the ultimate test of strength inside and outside the mask as they fight to save the city, each other and the ones they love, from the monstrous Venom and the dangerous new symbiote threat.

Traverse an expanded Marvel’s New York

Explore a larger Marvel’s New York than ever before, featuring two new boroughs – Brooklyn and Queens – as well as locations like Coney Island, and more.

Bought the game. Love the game. Those gadgets someone below complained about being power/ability based now? Best thing ever -- I'm finally using them, lol!
I thought Hollywood had hit rock buttom. Then this happened.

Yeah, I played a couple hours today, and in between the handful of crashes (possibly related to ray-tracing, as adjusting that down seemed to help), I'm noticing various annoying visual glitches during cutscenes... Being able to enjoy those is a pretty big deal for a cinematic story-heavy game like this. Some may be related to NVIDIA Ray Reconstruction, but toggling that off makes the ray-tracing look pretty crappy, so I would prefer not to have to do that. It definitely needs a patch to address such issues.

I don't have any real complaints about the performance I'm getting, though. I noticed a lot of knee-jerk reactions to seeing the 4090 listed for the highest settings, but at the low end they're supporting desktop parts that launched at $100-150 5+ years ago, which means it's likely running pretty well even on a Steam Deck... Especially considering they didn't base their guidelines on the usage of upscaling or framegen, so most people are going to get better framerate and/or resolution than what it says on the spec sheet just by employing one or both of those.

However, this is another game that will absolutely hammer your CPU if you blindly crank up all the settings. As was the case with Spider-Man 1, I'm assuming the PC version is supporting much higher crowd/traffic density, object detail, and ray-tracing fidelity than the console version did, so over-tuning any or all of those is a surefire way to trigger a bottleneck. Don't be surprised to see your 8c/16t processor pegged at 85-90% utilization during normal gameplay, which I reckon will cause a lot of folks to bump into their thermal limit or BSOD from what they thought was a stable OC/UV.

EDIT: As of the morning of Jan 31st, they've issued a hotfix to address crashes related to ray-tracing. Still needs DLSS fixes, but at least it should be more playable compared to yesterday.

Those mixed reviews don't give me a lot of confidence in this port. Odd too since the the first one ran very well.

Might need some patches. I believe I recall the first one went through a few that really increased FPS and stability. As much as I got the itch to pick this up now, I suppose I can hold off while I chip away further at Star Wars Outlaws. Not to mention the installation size... I need to remove another massive game to get some space back.

Yeah I've been waiting on 1 and MM to hit the $20 or less category as these console games generally aren't my bag, baby.

The only off putting thing for me is Spider-Man seems to be able to fly like Superman in these videos with some web cape thing. Seems really dumb he should be able to web swing only. Oh well Soulsborne games have effectively ruined me of other games now they just look like button mashing go A to B shovelware now.

I have played these games on the PS5, and the web glider is mixed in with swinging. You're always losing altitude when using it, unless you get in one of the wind tunnels around the city. Don't worry; you'll still be using the webs most of the time. The combat is somewhat basic, but on the harder difficulties you need to be VERY aware of when you need to be dodging, and temporarily disabling ranged enemies.

Loved Spider-Man, but never got into Miles Morales. I think because it was just more of the same but without all the good fat that I actually like in this sandbox.

Will I like Spider-Man 2 or will it be like Miles Morales? 🤔

Spidey 2 is a full game; Miles Morales was originally intended to be DLC (but grew too big for that). MM was stuck in an unfortunate spot, but I enjoyed it, despite being shorter.

You play as either spidey in this one, with a few missions requiring one or the other. Your upgrade tree is split into three parts, with abilities that both gain, or just Pete/Miles. Miles still has SOME story, but since the main baddie is Venom, it does tend to be mostly about Pete.

If you haven't played the first game and MM, various characters' actions will be confusing as hell. I didn't originally play the Spider-Man DLCs, and I was extremely confused by one of the character's behavior. It's explained in the DLCs. You don't HAVE to play the other games first, but it IS a bit like getting into the MCU movies at the halfway point.

I started playing this on a PS5 got to a certain point, and never went back. Admittedly, the symbiote-heavy story kind of turned me off, but they also changed the way gadgets and such work, that they're almost like powers system now and it just doesn't feel the same as Spider-Man or the Miles Morales game.

I'm not sure what the fat is you're referring to with Spider-Man vs Miles. It was the same full size city, just winter themed and the overall length of the game is shorter than Spider-Man. Otherwise, it had a lot of similar tropes and new ones introduced. The power Morales had made it stand out over the original.

That said, I hear this one is obviously more like the original since they probably spent the same equal development time on it that they did the first. Can't wait to give it a shot.

Been waiting for a bundle of the first Spidey + Miles to finally go on sale for €20 max so the release of this crap is good news because it should hopefully accelerate the price drop of the first two games. Thanks, Sooooooneeeeehhhh!
