NVIDIA RTX 5090, 5080, and New Driver

NVIDIA announces the availability of its new GeForce RTX 5090 and GeForce RTX 5080 graphics cards. This comes alongside the launch of DLSS 4 With Multi Frame Generation & Enhancements in Over 75 Games and Apps, the launch of NVIDIA Smooth Motion, and an updated list of games with NVIDIA DLSS & GeForce RTX support. Lastly, a new GeForce 572.16 WHQL Windows driver is now available, adding support for the new cards and new games including Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II as well as released titles such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Star Wars Outlaws. There's also G-SYNC support for additional monitors, new optimal game settings, and more. Here's a rundown:
Our new driver also adds support for new technologies, RTX game updates, new NVIDIA app features, and more:

  • DLSS 4: New AI innovations further enhance image quality, and accelerate performance. And DLSS Multi Frame Generation, in conjunction with the suite of other DLSS technologies, multiplies frame rates by up to 8X on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs
  • DLSS 4 Overrides: Upgrade over 75 games and apps to DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation using a new NVIDIA app feature
  • NVIDIA App: RTX Video Super Resolution optimizations and enhancements, new multiple display settings, Advanced Optimus support, and more are introduced in a new NVIDIA app update
  • NVIDIA Broadcast: Update the popular app now to add two new AI-powered effects
  • RTX Game Updates: Get Game Ready for DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, RTX Mega Geometry, RTX Hair, and Neural Radiance Cache, in new updates for Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle™, and Star Wars™ Outlaws
  • NVIDIA Smooth Motion: A new driver-based AI model delivers smoother gameplay by inferring an additional frame between two rendered frames on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs
  • New Games: Get Game Ready for the release of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, two new titles featuring DLSS technologies
  • New G-SYNC Compatible Displays: Another 19 gaming displays are now supported

Upgraded my rtx 2060 super to a rtx 4070 super a few days ago. Couldn't be happier with the performance in modded Cyberpunk 2077.
Wont bother with the 50xx series for the next 4-5 years at least.

Ah, human greed and fomo in full swing! Get twice the scalping (1st by Nvidia with their MSRP and 2nd by the scalpers' surcharge) for each single buy = win! Right?
The GPU market is just a sad sign of how people forget about prices before Nvidia found out during the COVID pandemic that people are willing pay pretty much every unreasonable price. And now they just use the same prices as during the supply problems because of COVID. And the people just smile and pay... I don't understand mankind anymore. Headscratch Sad

I can't believe Asus wants over $4100 CAD or whatever for one of their models, when the FE is $2899.99 and also appears to have a good cooling solution already (minus the memory cooling which is apparently below average). WTF do you get with Asus for well over $1000 over the FE.. bloatware software, RGB and a couple degrees C cooler performance?

5:59 am PST best buy had one in cart, went to checkout right away and it then removed itself from my cart. Would just error out after that for pre-order on restock and finally after 3 minutes removed that option outright.

Very paper launch.

Gamers Nexus just dropped a video titled "Paper Launch" , you'll never guess what it's about.

We crawled through the internet to try and learn more about just how low the inventory and stock was, as well as share our own experiences of trying (and failing) to buy any RTX 5090 GPUs on launch day.
We also spoke with numerous people in the industry to try and learn more, and it does look like the 5090 is lower supply than the RTX 4090 was at launch.

Yepp, so the 5090 was a paper launch...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMd2WHKnceI

We might see the cards come in stock half-way in this year. For now, just hang on to your 30 and 40 series cards

If anyone here somehow gets a 5090, just sell it... there are game companies that will pay $$$ on ebay, just because they need to know how their game performs on that card for benchmarking purposes.

I'll just wait 3-6 months and get one after the craziness is over. And/or get two or three used 3090s for the same price... 3090 is still the best bang for your buck IMHO, for LLM applications.

Let's give it some time. nVidia might have jumped the gun a little. There was apparently some "miscommunication" with the board partners and nVidia also seem to be in some kind of fight with Samsung who are the supplier of at least the first batch of GDDR7 (and of some of the HBM modules for the pro AI cards). Or were, rather.
nVidia want to take all orders away from Samsung because they are/were unhappy with the HBM supply and quality (linky) and how Samsung was doing business with them.

People were wondering why Huang mentioned "Micron" as the GDDR7 supplier at the CES presentation in early January when it turned out that the first demo/press cards were actually equipped with Samsung memory. "Micron" might not have been a slip of the tongue as originally suspected.

There is probably a little turmoil behind the scenes because nVidia pulled the initial order(s) from Samsung and the next batches will likely really be Micron (and maybe SK Hynix?) but it may take some ramp up time before everything is in place and before production is full steam ahead at 100%.

It's a little muddy but putting 2 + 2 it seems pretty clear to me that nVidia jumped the gun and revealed/announced RTX 5090/5080 before the typical buildup phase of launch stock quantities had concluded. It will be interesting to see if Samsung GDDR7 will be used beyond the first batch of cards or if we will only see GDDR7 of other suppliers down the line.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure we will be seeing much better availability starting from March. It also took ~4 to 5 months after the launch of the RTX 4090 until the prices came down from €2500+ at launch to the €1700 - €1999 range. It's the new "normal".

I have decided to make the best of the situation so I rung up my assistant Jenny and I told her to saddle up the 'Jolly Roger' (that's my yacht) and I will be on a winter break with the gals until March-ish or so, ya know, a bit of Barbados, some Martinique and then prolly St. Kitts & Nevis for good measure, ya know, flying about in my 'Red Baron' (that's muh helo) when the sea gets too boring and if I need some fresh "air" haha... ya know, I'll live, bro... I hit up a Best Buy in person this morning just to try my luck. After standing in line for 30 minutes, the manager came out and said they didn't have any at all. Poor dude in front of me drove 6 hours to try to get one. Just let me get on a waiting list for one. I hate having to refresh their damn page every day and home I'm lucky.

Astral GPU is almost 20*C cooler than FE, giving it one of the highest OC speeds of an air-cooled 5090, resulting in 10% gain compared to 5090 at stock.

Maybe that's worth 15% bump on MSRP?

But a +40% increase is price gouging, so yes, I do agree with you

Let's not forget that the FE is a !!! 2 SLOT DESIGN !!!, that is insanely impressive! The ASUS one is a 4!!!!! slot design, it would be an embarrassment if it wasn't at least 15°C cooler under full load. The fact that it has to be a 4 slot kills any justification for the price.

Astral is the most expensive custom model and noisy as fuck (especially the 4th fan on the backside). As much as I like ASUS for mobos but their gfx cards are typically overpriced garbage.
I would advise looking at reviews of MSI Suprim instead which was also higher rated by TPU than the Astral.
