BioWare Layoffs

After beating around the bush for a bit, a BioWare Studio Update on the BioWare Blog announces layoffs. While "a core team at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy," now that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is out, they "don’t require support from the full studio." The announcement spins this as positively as possible:
In keeping with our fierce commitment to innovating during the development and delivery of Mass Effect, we have challenged ourselves to think deeply about delivering the best experience to our fans. We are taking this opportunity between full development cycles to reimagine how we work at BioWare.

Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio. We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and so we have worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit.

Today’s news will see BioWare become a more agile, focused studio that produces unforgettable RPGs. We appreciate your support as we build a new future for BioWare.

I love it that bigoted dipshit Reich-wingers don't understand that capitalism is the reason everything sucks. Billionaires are your enemy, not some idiot bait distraction like "woke". 🙄

The sheer hypocrisy in this place is what drove me to quit posting here altogether.

A post mocking wokeness is deleted as a "shit post" but this personally insulting post is allowed to remain--because of course it is. We may deny the thing exists, or we may praise it (often in the same post) but we can never mock it ...

Have fun in your little echo chamber.
Your reaction to the reaction to the shitpost wasn't deleted either. It's almost like not everything can be understood through the lens of anti-woke reductionism.

And describing someone calling out bigotry as a personal attack is a weird self-own.

Can I have one singular example of "left-wing extremism"? How is you and everyone around you having more rights and freedoms "extremism", yet fascists doing and saying things that leads to people dying is not? I have never felt represented by my government. Leftists have zero power in this system.

edit- and the fact that you think dems are "the left" is just 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. They are center-right. You've never seen leftist policies enacted, because billionaires run the show.

It's worse than that - 1.5m *engagements* likely meaning they're including those who played it on whatever streaming services it was on (including the 5 hour trial for the lower tier EA and Gamepass owners) Sales were likely <1m as Outlaws (released around the same time) barely broke that number and that was the 47th best selling game of 2024 - whereas Dragon Age was the 67th.

<1m sales over 3 months is dire for a game of that scale and cost. Also note it's been on sale twice on Steam (currently 45% off) and the stats show barely any change in player count, it didn't even move back into the top 100 sales chart, indicating even at a discount the rhetoric around the game is enough that people aren't bothering and waiting for a deeper sale.

Dude the Dragon Age Games were great and I loved the series but they need to learn to let things go and innovate, not re-iterate. Dragon Age Veilguard was just another iteration of the same game after a decade.

Make something new, come up with new shit not take the old stuff and giving it a facelift.
Lukiopimp, I didn't buy this game because it was NOT more of the same. I would have bought it if it had been like Dragon Age Origins or even like Inquisition. But they totally changed the fighting system and the game was shouting CONSOLE! I AM A FULL CONSOLE GAME NOW! to me so loud that I had to shut this game up. Not even for $5 I would buy it. Not with this fighting game mechanics.

EA expected three million which imo are very modest expectations given the (theoretical) pedigree of the dev and the franchise. Dragon Age Inquisition (direct prequel of this Veilguard garbage) sold over 12 million copies about a decade ago when the TAM was much smaller than today. How is 3 million "entirely unreasonable"? Get a clue, please. Thank you very much.

Bingo

They guessed 3 million and the game came in around 1.5m.
Nothing to see here.
