Out of the Blue

Happy Lunar New Year! Today marks the occasion on lunisolar calendars, and the Year of the Snake has slithered in. Specifically this is the Year of the Wood Snake, which seems like it would be a favorite of Beavis and Butthead. So happy new year, though I'm sure for a couple of weeks I'll still be writing Year of the Dragon on my checks.

In other festive news, Jackie, one of the residents of the Big Bear Bald Eagle Nest, dropped her third egg overnight (thanks Frans). Here's the clip of the event. You can't really see the egg drop, but at around the 3:20 mark she moves and you can see all three eggs. But while you can't see it, you can sure hear it, as labor involved an incredible amount of bird queefing. Poor girl sounds like a whistling teakettle for a while there. Anyway, bald eagle clutches tend to be one to three eggs, so presumably she's done with bird labor. Now comes the anxiety of waiting for hatchlings. The typical incubation process is around 35 days, so we're looking at the first week in March to see how things work out this year. Fingers crossed.

Hahaha!

Seeing as super glue was developed as a battlefield suture for the Vietnam War that would make sense.

And hahaha once more for Savage Chickens. That's perfect!

Tis amazing what you can find with a simple google search.
Super glue was technically invented in 1942, when a team at Eastman-Kodak’s chemical division was tasked with researching chemicals called cyanoacrylates with the goal of finding a way to make a clear plastic that could be used to manufacture precision gunsights for World War II.
Researchers discovered the chemicals were extremely sticky and bonded with nearly any surface they came into contact with.
Kodak released the product in 1958, calling it “Eastman 910.”
Cyanoacrylates weren't used in Vietnam until 1966.

we used Dermabond in my day, but it's kinda the same ideal of superglue, more flexible tho. I think we are still using it, IDK I got out 15 years ago.

We use a professional version of Cyanoacrylate glue (CA, or super glue) to work on RC Planes. It has a longer shelf life and more stable than store bought stuff (pro-tip: You want your cheap store bought superglue to last, put it in the fridge). The pro stuff comes in varieties (thick, thin, flexible, there's even a foam-safe version, as normal CA will melt foam, and a lot of our planes are foam construction nowadays). There's a 'kicker' spray we use that is handy if you need it to bond instantly, like when you can't comfortably clamp the parts because they're in an awkward location, like inside the fuselage (spray kicker on one part, put CA on the other, hold together for maybe 5 seconds and it sets instantly).

As someone who uses CA a lot, I also have a bottle of de-bonder in my toolbox, on the rare occasion I do get it on my skin.

I always have a bottle in my toolkit for the flying field, not just for field repairs. I had a prop slice my arm one time, and I just CA'd the slice, and kept flying. Probably needed a few stitches, but I never bothered.

Combat gauze impregnated with kaolin is used today to pack wounds and cause the blood to clot, creating both a seal and barrier. Deep wound or gunshot wound? Tampon with combat gauze packed in the wound entrance.

Learned their use and function in my TCCC class.

I used HemCon first, Combat gauze is made with quick clot and can cause thermal tissue damage because of the heat it generated. but I carried it too, as well as straight up quick clot. Remember the first step in TCCC is to return fire with aimed precise fire. Never came across a GSW that I could treat with a tampon.

The TCCC course I took was for civvies as I am one these days. List of gear was oriented to what a normal person could reasonably obtain. I knew many corpsman when I was in, however, who carried tampons to stuff in deep wounds as packing and then slapped a sealer over the top until a casualty could medevac out. As a packing for what you, a person who was not being supplied by Uncle Sam, could reasonably acquire it was highly recommended.

TFP, don't. Combat gauze is for true SHTF situations with heavy bleeding and being way the Hell and gone from a medical facility without evac being available. Like a "I gotta walk my wounded ass off this mountain, out of these woods, and drive myself to the hospital" situation.

For your prop slice, I'd rinse the wound with distilled water, pack it with MediHoney or Tegaderm, and then wrap it with sterile dressing. Then head to an emergency clinic or hospital for examination. Though, if you have the fortitude and steady hand, you'd could learn and practice how to suture and suture the wound yourself.

GRRM Shares His Glowing Review Of New Game Of Thrones Show, But Warns Certain Fans "This One May Not Satisfy" - ScreenRant. Wonder if he'll ever figure out the one thing that *would* satisfy fans. Thanks RedEye9.

GRRR don't remind me! To think of the hundreds of hours I've spent reading those 5 books, and then the addendums and the novellas... and waiting! always waiting.
Darned old guy needs to fire up WordStar on his 386 and complete Book 6!

Edit to add: from his blog, this particular little bit (SIGH):
Meanwhile, we’ll be moving on to “The Sworn Sword,” the second tale of Dunk & Egg. And once I finish THE WINDS OF WINTER, I will need to get hopping on “The Village Hero,” and all the other tales that await the lads.

I actually do stupid stuff, BoP, like mountain biking in the middle of nowhere where it could take hours for someone to carry me out, or for me to walk out, not to mention some of the planes we fly can easily cut a limb down to the bone, so I think one of those in my go-bag for emergencies is a good idea.

This just made me go through my go-bag and car first aid kit and restock. Lot's of old crap in there that was way past it's shelf life.

I feel you though I prefer to call it "vigorous adventuring". A couple of weeks back, the dogs and I were on an extended trek during that polar vortex storm that hit and wilderness camped throughout it. That was fun! Many people in my inner circle used phrases like "crazy", "goddamned stupid", and "do you want to die".

I wasn't trying to wholly dissuade you, just give you a better picture of when it would be appropriate to apply. I keep an expanded first aid kit in both trucks, my 30L backpack, and my 70L backpack. My 30L is my "everyday carry" bag and the one I also take to work with me. Given our propensity here in the States for school shootings, it seemed wise to me be able to patch myself or someone else up until proper medical aid can arrive.

I go through my kits on a quarterly basis and rotate out what is nearing expiration date. I keep a little slip of paper in each of them with item, quantity, and installed date written in pencil so it is easy to amend and update as needed. It's in a tough plastic sleeve that I have adhered to the underside of the lid.
