Out of the Blue

Happy Lunar New Year! Today marks the occasion on lunisolar calendars, and the Year of the Snake has slithered in. Specifically this is the Year of the Wood Snake, which seems like it would be a favorite of Beavis and Butthead. So happy new year, though I'm sure for a couple of weeks I'll still be writing Year of the Dragon on my checks.

In other festive news, Jackie, one of the residents of the Big Bear Bald Eagle Nest, dropped her third egg overnight (thanks Frans). Here's the clip of the event. You can't really see the egg drop, but at around the 3:20 mark she moves and you can see all three eggs. But while you can't see it, you can sure hear it, as labor involved an incredible amount of bird queefing. Poor girl sounds like a whistling teakettle for a while there. Anyway, bald eagle clutches tend to be one to three eggs, so presumably she's done with bird labor. Now comes the anxiety of waiting for hatchlings. The typical incubation process is around 35 days, so we're looking at the first week in March to see how things work out this year. Fingers crossed.

I used HemCon first, Combat gauze is made with quick clot and can cause thermal tissue damage because of the heat it generated. but I carried it too, as well as straight up quick clot. Remember the first step in TCCC is to return fire with aimed precise fire. Never came across a GSW that I could treat with a tampon.

Combat gauze impregnated with kaolin is used today to pack wounds and cause the blood to clot, creating both a seal and barrier. Deep wound or gunshot wound? Tampon with combat gauze packed in the wound entrance.

Learned their use and function in my TCCC class.

We use a professional version of Cyanoacrylate glue (CA, or super glue) to work on RC Planes. It has a longer shelf life and more stable than store bought stuff (pro-tip: You want your cheap store bought superglue to last, put it in the fridge). The pro stuff comes in varieties (thick, thin, flexible, there's even a foam-safe version, as normal CA will melt foam, and a lot of our planes are foam construction nowadays). There's a 'kicker' spray we use that is handy if you need it to bond instantly, like when you can't comfortably clamp the parts because they're in an awkward location, like inside the fuselage (spray kicker on one part, put CA on the other, hold together for maybe 5 seconds and it sets instantly).

As someone who uses CA a lot, I also have a bottle of de-bonder in my toolbox, on the rare occasion I do get it on my skin.

I always have a bottle in my toolkit for the flying field, not just for field repairs. I had a prop slice my arm one time, and I just CA'd the slice, and kept flying. Probably needed a few stitches, but I never bothered.

we used Dermabond in my day, but it's kinda the same ideal of superglue, more flexible tho. I think we are still using it, IDK I got out 15 years ago.

Tis amazing what you can find with a simple google search.
Super glue was technically invented in 1942, when a team at Eastman-Kodak’s chemical division was tasked with researching chemicals called cyanoacrylates with the goal of finding a way to make a clear plastic that could be used to manufacture precision gunsights for World War II.
Researchers discovered the chemicals were extremely sticky and bonded with nearly any surface they came into contact with.
Kodak released the product in 1958, calling it “Eastman 910.”
Cyanoacrylates weren't used in Vietnam until 1966.

Hahaha!
Party2

Seeing as super glue was developed as a battlefield suture for the Vietnam War that would make sense.

And hahaha once more for Savage Chickens. That's perfect!
