High level – you could say it’s a blend of the two but with a new, medieval toolkit. We’re looking to create an experience that has the depth of Eternal’s loop with the simplicity of Doom (2016)’s control scheme. As a player, you performed a lot of cool actions in Eternal, and each action/attack had its own input. In Dark Ages we have a brand-new set of cool medieval actions to perform but this time, with fewer buttons to press!
The depth/simplicity is achieved by making the behavior of items like the Shield-Saw change based on the material it interacts with. It’s contextual: the shield throw ricochets off plasma shields hitting other enemies (feels awesome), it sticks into flesh (stun locking larger demons), or it can shatter armor creating an AOE blast – all with a single button press.

I'm surprised there's no comments on the price. It's RRP for the standard version is £69.99 - ridiculously expensive. I'd love to day one it (if I had the rig to run it), but at that price? Nope. Previous two games have dropped rapidly in price within a year, so I'll wait (and hopefully I'll have a spanky PC by then).
I can't speak to your region, that is high.
It's "15%" off on GMG preorder right now for 76.49 Canadian (standard edition msrp / rrp 89.99 cad), which is 42.95 pounds right now.

Those big pink circles that prompt you to do QT events, for people who like to mash buttons but can't be bothered to do shit using their own brains, that shit has no business being in a DOOM game.
Aaakshually... since DOOM marks the genesis of the brainless shooter, I would say anything and everything that requires no brainz is a perfect fit for a DOOM game. Yes. Even pink circles.

Doom Eternal was a big nope for me. Never thought I'd age out of doom.
I loved that game, warts and all. One of those games that left an absolutely ridiculous grin on my face the entire time. 10/10. I hardly do AAA anymore but this is day 1 for me.
It's the only game with 100% Steam Achievements on my profile. I liked how Hugo described Eternal as playing a "Fighter Jet" and Dark Ages will be more of an "iron tank". I think this may appeal more to the fans of 2016 and the original DOOM. I actually LOVED the speed and vertical gameplay of Eternal but I'm confident that I'll be addicted in no time to the new loop - after all it's got a parry system ❤️
Still, none of that has any business being in a Doom game. The only pink shit that is allowed in Doom, is the pinky demon.Pre-Eternal Me would have agreed with you. Lately, if the gameplay really "clicks", I tend to ignore visual annoyances.

I think this one looks quite a bit better than Eternal. I do wish though that they leaned more into sci-fi-horror, than fantasy. This looks more like Heretic or Hexen than Doom. Also the HUD looks like total ass. Doom HUD should be doom guy face in the middle. Health count, ammo count, armor, that's it. Those big pink circles that prompt you to do QT events, for people who like to mash buttons but can't be bothered to do shit using their own brains, that shit has no business being in a DOOM game.
- The HUD is very likely work in progress and definitely looks like placeholder art
- While I'm also not a fan of those flashy visual indicators those are not QT events, that's telegraphing for parry etc imho

Definitely NO day 1 purchase. Will get this when all the DLCs are out and when the game is content and feature complete. And on sale.

RedEye9 wrote on Jan 23, 2025, 21:13:It was not an age thing but a gameplay thing IMO. I hate platformers, and Doom Eternal was too often Doomkey Kong. Also the developers tried to force players to kill with certain weapons and with glory kills and so on - do not force players, it kills the fun. Dark Ages looks muuuuch more interesting to me.
