Out of the Blue

I visited the dentist yesterday to get my new permanent crown. The whole process was about three weeks start-to-finish, and the span could have been shorter if my schedule was more flexible. This is such a painful contrast with my last major dentistry, which involved getting a temporary right before COVID and then having to live with it while the project remained on hold. I don't think it's irony, but what's worse is this recent work was a canine tooth that would have been fine with a long-term temp, while my last one was a removable temporary front tooth that was a nightmare to deal with. That certainly would have worked much better in reverse. But at least both problems are taken care of, which makes it easier to grin and bear it.

I haven't had dental insurance for about 20 years now - almost 60% of Canadians don't. Getting an implant and crown here is $5000 - at least it was a few years ago which means it's probably even more expensive now. That reminds me to start doing research again on the dental tourist thing.

It's about $4500 to $6000 in Calgary. At least for my 2nd molar, lower jaw. Was going in for a root canal, but 2 days before the operation the tooth split in half. Luckily, the nerve was already dead from the infection, held at bay with antibiotics. I think it was cracked the year before, but the cold sensitivity was intermittent and the minor pain would go away after a few weeks, then come back. I could not tell which tooth it was (fricking jumped around), and would need a 3D CBCT scanner and some advanced equipment to find it. Only after it swelled up after my senior dog died (younger one is still kicking) did I figure out which tooth!

BTW, implants aren't covered under corporate health insurance either. Including bone grafts - which is kind of annoying because it would be nice to have the option to pull a bad tooth, fill the hole to prevent gumline collapse and neighbor tooth shifting, but not get the implant.

I also have a front upper tooth implant in 2016 - I went to Costa Rica for that one. State of the art. First attempt failed, but luckily the (world famous?) dentist was trying out a new implant technology where it could be done in a few days - no bone graft needed. Redrill the hole, screw in the implant screw (wide fins!). Wait 24 hours for the crown to be milled, install, then fly home. $1500 USD back then, plus airfare + lodging.

Southwest Airlines pilot arrested just before takeoff and accused of DUI

Back in the day I talking with a trust fund kid who was in his sixth year of college working on a 4 year degree. The subject of pilots came up and he said that they were the most upstanding impeccable humans on the face of the planet. perfection personified

I reminded him that they were human and that just a few months earlier pilots had been found sleeping in the captains chair on long overseas flights.
But he was having no part of it.
I lost touch with him. I wonder if he's still in school. Wink

I had a crown replaced last Friday! About $800 after insurance but that was because they didn't have to redo the previous tooth surface.

My dentist has a really cool setup. They do a 3d scan of the tooth being replaced, prep the old tooth (grind down to a stump) then scan that. I was able to see a 3D model of my teeth on the monitor as they did the work. From there, they have tooth blanks from (I believe) a zirconium compound and a small milling machine. They mill the crown from the zirconium and then sinter it to harden (I think about 1000C for 30 minutes or so). Then they fit and bond the crown in your mouth and you're done. Take about 2 hours or so.

Previously it was a multi-day procedure when they send everything out for processing.

I was coming in here to say the last two crowns I got were done with the milling machine. Start to finish, a couple hours, and you walk out with your completed tooth in place. The milling machine is fun to watch; it's got a pair of little drill bits that go absolutely bonkers on what looks like a sugar cube, spraying water the whole time. At the end it drops out the bottom like a vending machine. It's the future for crowns. Right now, the machine is expensive for a dentist to buy....I lucked out that the dentist I had is more interested in buying fun gizmos than boats. He was an early buyer of the thing; he had it in...2018 or so I think was the first one I had done there. I got to see the whole process because MAN I was excited to see how all that worked, and he was just as excited to show it to me.

It's not common that you go home after the dentist EXCITED to tell people about the experience you had.
