Marvel Rivals Adds Fantastic Four; Removes Mods and Skins [Jan 10, 2025, 11:08 am ET] – Share – Viewing Comments
There are
Version 20250110 Patch Notes on Steam for a new update to Marvel Rivals
that kicks off Season 1 in the multiplayer shooter with the promised
introduction of the Fantastic Four along with new maps, modes, and improvements.
Something that's not evident from the notes is that the update introduces a hash
check preventing the use of mods, including custom skins. This is
reported on IGN, which notes this enforces a prohibition on mods that's been
in place since the game's launch. "It is not recommended to modify any game
files, NetEase tells them. "As doing so carries the risk of getting banned."

- Prepare for the thrilling arcade mode (Doom Match) and its map (Sanctum Sanctorum): 8-12 players will engage in battle, with the top 50% emerging victorious.
- New feature: In Convoy and Convergence, both sides can transition to the next spawn room sometime after the attacking side completes the current target.
- Enhanced feature: During the loading phase of a Quick Match, you can now view the Nameplates of both sides.

It could also be coming from Marvel themselves...after-all I counted no less than 15 nude skins day 1, and generally properties like this (and doubly when it's Disney owned) look down on widespread adult edits of characters.

Again, even if it's local-only, the issue OTHER than people getting skins they don't have to pay for (the game's sole income), is that players could modify the skins they see their opponents using. That means they could easily set the entire opposing team in neon colored skins that make them VERY easy to spot and track, which IS cheating. All with "mods only the client can see".
Modding any competitive game HAS to be nipped in the bud, or else it'll turn into a game of "who has the best mods to cheat".
Shh! Let the usual suspects keep crying "censorship" rather thank thinking through that it's a competitive multiplayer game.

I was pretty surprised that custom skin mods were working/allowed when that article about the Trump and Biden skins (not) on Nexus came up the other day.

It's decent fun, although I've only played a handful of characters so far. I understand their ban on mods...you can't make a game that makes money solely off selling you new skins if players can just download skins anyway. Also, players could easily mod in skins for their opponents that make them easy to see no matter what, which would be hugely unfair.
