Out of the Blue

Well it's been pretty eventful for what was supposed to be a quiet Saturday here at the BlueTower. My computer booted with a message that it didn't like what it was hearing from the CPU cooler. And in case I thought this was a false alarm, the air had that distinct whiff of ozone to confirm something in there arced. Trusting the diagnosis from the BIOS I headed off to Best Buy (sorry about that on Small Business Saturday, but there isn't a mom and pop PC store within two decades of here), and amid slim pickings, got a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, a simple air-cooler that should be up to my short-term needs. The Corsair AIO water-cooler died two years into a five year warranty, so after starting the day wearing my IT badge, followed by my current use of my editor-in-chief hat, later I'll sit down at my desk as head of the legal department and pursue a replacement.

You have my sympathies on all counts, KX. Seeing my neighbor's wife disappear to Alzheimer's just shy of two years was truly terrifying. I honestly think if I end up with something like that, MS, Parkinsons, etc. I'll just swallow a bullet when it gets bad enough, or head to Switzerland for a chemical cocktail. If more people knew just how bad it is they'd be screaming for the politicians to fund the end of these horror shows no matter the cost.

I stick with air coolers. Big fan of the Noctua NH-D15.

That said, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is an okay cooler. Used to be my preferred budget cooler back in the day. If you have enough positive airflow in the case, it'll still do a good job.

My wife hates me for it, but I insist on keeping a spare air cooler and thermal paste on hand incase ether of our AIO's decide to cause trouble. Its at least a back-up solution.

I am deeply sorry to hear about your mother's passing, Kx. If your faith helps you through the grief, then indulge in it freely. I have heard the same relief expressed by those that I know who had parents with dementia and Alzheimer's. My BFAM recently had his biological mother who was suffering mightily from dementia pass. He called me to ask if it was normal to feel relieved because he was feeling a guilty about it. I assured him that it was absolutely normal and not to feel guilty.

yeah this is why I don't install water cooling. I had a machine with that - MSI water cooler that has water additives that clogged up the radiator/hose. I found out later that the entire product line had to be recalled - but it was too late for me. Had to replace with an old Noctua cooler I had lying around - which was running for 6 years without a failure heh.
On my 12700K build I used an MSI aio, it "died" after about 19-20 months, got it replaced by the shop under warranty, the replacement was the same model, I hoped without the flaw but alas, it lasted around 6 months, replaced it with a coolermaster 360 AIO runs fine ever since, only AIO I had ever die on me.

And since I also had some issues with my MSI mobo, I'm staying away from MSI for now, mostly chose them because of some cashback promo's on them and Asus going nuts on pricing.

I've never had good luck with AIOs. So I stuck with air cooling and never had an issue.

I've used two, both are still going. The first AIO I used is on an i5 750, a Corsair H50 I think (can't be bothered to look it up), 120mm single fan. I gave that PC to my niece, and it's still going. My current PC has an Arctic something. It's a thicker radiator with two fans in a push/pull configuration.

Although I've had good luck with them, I'm going with air cooling with my next build, which I will hopefully be ordering in a week or two.

There was a spider in my bathroom that I decided to leave alone, assuming it had come inside to escape the cold. Day after day, I noticed it wandering around the bathtub. Eventually, I started to worry it had been there too long without any food. It wasn’t looking great—seemed lethargic. So, I grabbed a few sheets of toilet paper and carefully and gently took it outside. I thought that was it. An hour later, I went to check the mail and saw the spider had died. That made me really sad—it literally starved to death in my bathtub. Next time I see a spider, I’ll put it outside immediately so it can find a home and something to eat.

What a shitty end to an otherwise good day yesterday. My ma's rescue bunny died last night around 8pm. She is just beside herself with grief. And I'm pretty broken up too. I'd look after him several weeks a year when she went traveling. He was the coolest little guy. What a personality. And he was only 4 - they're supposed to live 8-10 years. She said he wasn't feeling well but nothing you'd think you need a vet for - he did have some health issues from day one. She was giving him hugs - pets - and he just gave up the ghost in her hands. She was at least with him at the end, though I honestly don't know if it makes it better or worse. And as a little old lady in her late 70s with some of her own health issues that have recently cropped up it's not good all around. And just coming into Christmas as well only compounds it. Dug his grave today and will lay him to rest tomorrow. Goddamned Black Friday indeed. All of you who have pets you love, give them some big hugs and kisses right now. You never know if you'll get that chance again.
