Out of the Blue

Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating, and to all who aren't here's hoping you have reasons to be happy and thankful nonetheless. I'm certainly appreciative you are reading these words, so thank you for the support. We will visit my stepfather's for dinner later. This will be a very low-key affair, which is fine, and hopefully the drive into Manhattan will be low-key as well. To our experience this drive been much less painful than you might expect, as it seems like the major flow is out of the city towards the more rural areas, rather than the reverse course we're taking. We'll just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. Here's hoping your plans, or lack thereof, are equally suitable and that everyone has safe travels.

Stuffed Round-up
Thanks Ant, Neutronbeam, and Max.

New remake of the 1981 film with John Savage starring Remi Malek this time around. It actually looks pretty good. I quite liked the original. I'd love to see more films in this vein where the protagonist isn't some ex-special forces guy taking names and kicking ass.

Looks interesting. Thx.

Oh, and they finally added a power button (took them five versions to get there, but hey, better late than never). It also has a real-time clock, so you don't need the internet for basic timekeeping. Plus, you can choose memory options ranging from 2GB to 8GB—all for under $100! Raspberry is such an amazing tech.

Meh. I used to be all in on Pis during the 1st and 2nd gens but you can now get off-lease enterprise SFF x86 boxes that will smoke the Raspberry Pi for the same price in capabilities and specs. You can also upgrade the memory to more than 8GB depending on the model. Whether you choose Linux or Windows, you also have access to a wider array of packages. Also, you can get pretty close to the same power performance. Well, maybe not on Windows since Daddy Microsoft assumes all of its users are too stupid to manage their own PCs. The only thing missing is the GPIO ports but those can be replicated with add-in cards fairly cheaply if someone really has to have that. By the time you add in case, power supply, and heatsink (you really want an active one for the Pi 4s and newer), you're actually more expensive than an off-lease enterprise SFF box.

Lulz. I just got a reminder from my Google calendar of I bet I made with a buddy. On October 1st 2014 he said, "I expect driverless taxis to become the norm within 10 years." I said I would take that bet. Pretty sure I won that. He owes me a dinner. I sent him an email, no response yet.

Yeah, but is it really wining when you and your friend can't catch a driverless taxi home from the bar, I mean dinner; after going a little too hard, on the Zima's. Apparently, you get a DUI if your in a driverless taxi. It's the law.

The Raspberry Pi 5 is absolutely insane! It's next-level stuff packed into such a tiny form factor (the size of a credit card). The CPU is 3x faster than the Pi 4, and it even supports two displays at 4Kp60—how crazy is that? It comes with two USB 3 and two USB 2 ports as standard, plus a PCIe interface for M.2 SSDs.
