Out of the Blue

With all this talk of the decline of web advertising these days, several readers have asked us via email and posts to our messageboards whether clicking on the ads on this site directly helps us. There is a more complex answer to be had, but the simpler one will just about suffice in its place, and that answer is yes. This is because in addition to the fact that there are CPC (cost per click) ads in the mix, which only actually pay of if they are clicked upon, even for the much broader CPM (cost per thousand) advertisements, click-through rate is often used to define whether such campaigns are a success, and should be continued. So there, clicking the ads certainly can't hurt, and who knows, maybe some day someone will actually shock that damn monkey.

Link of the Day: Win RG {Flash required}. Windows "really good edition." Thanks Frag.Machine. Sheer genius.
Play Time: WingNut666's Doom Quiz-O-Rama! A little too easy because of repeating questions, and there's sometimes only one answer that makes sense, but fun nonetheless. Thanks Daxxus.

Weird Science: Dark blue light 'may end jetlag' (Ananova). Thanks Andrew Arace.
Wild Science: 'Spin' Could Be Quantum Boost for Computers NY Times free registration required. Thanks Jonathan C. Forster.
Media of the Day: This teakettle auction (thanks Modo). I'm a little teapot, short and stout, here is my handle here is my spout!

"I'm a little teapot, short and stout, here is my handle here is my spout!"

Duh guys.
Two things...first of all...
You think he'd put up a LotD as dumb as a plain ol' teapot
auction? Well...okay...maybe every once in awhile...

But, come ON...
You think the "here is my handle here is my spout" was
referring to the TEAPOT? *sigh*
Such a sad, sad day for the lifespan of the "dirty mind."

Stranger yet, the hall can predict the future:

November 30, 2001
A multi-count lawsuit against Chuck Berry is filed on behalf of pianist Johnny Johnson. It seeks a share of royalties for Johnson, who allegedly co-composed numerous hit songs with Berry that have heretofore been credited to Berry alone.

Chuck wrote it.

An interesting quote from the rock and roll hall of fame

Ironically, this venerable rock and roll pioneer achieved his one and only Number 1 hit, "My Ding-a-Ling" -- a risque novelty song he'd long been performing in adult nightclub settings -- in 1972. By this time, his music had grown so entrenched that he didn't even tour with a band, preferring to recruit pickup musicians in each new town. In those days, if you knew how to play rock and roll, it was a given that you'd cut your teeth on the songs of Chuck Berry.

When I was a little biddy boy
My grandma bought me a cute little toy
Two Silver bells on a string
She told me it was my ding-a-ling-a-ling

My Ding-A-Ling My Ding-A-Ling won't you play with My Ding-A-Ling
My Ding-A-Ling My Ding-A-Ling won't you play with My Ding-A-Ling

When I was little boy In Grammar school
Always went by the very best rule
But Evertime the bell would ring
You'd catch me playing with my ding-a-ling

Once while climbing the garden wall,
Slipped and fell had a very bad fall
I fell so hard I heard birds sing,
But I held on to My ding-a-ling

Once while swimming cross turtle creek
Man them snappers right at my feet
Sure was hard swimming cross that thing
with both hands holding my dingaling

Now this here song it ain't so bad
Prettiest little song that you ever had
And those of you who will not sing
must be playing with your on Ding-a-ling

I used to work for Old Cowtown Museum here in Wichita, KS. If you ever come through and have any interest in the 'old west' - you have to check this place out. The management sucks, but the crew out there is great. More on that some other time. When I was working in the drug store I learned that in the 1870s a big thing was Blue Glass. Basically, people thought that by having sunlight come through these peices of blue glass and then striking their skin, misc. health benefits could be achived. Quite a few drug stores advertised blue glass along with everything else they sold (Paint, Perfume, Razors, Chalk, Patent Med., Tobaco, Medicinal Alcohol, and much much more) The Wichita Eagle also reports one gentleman purchasing the Blue Glass and then putting it to work in his household to help his sickly child.

Just off the top of my head. I'll try and see if i can find the songwriter.

Actually it wasn't. The song was kind of a joke like we see it today. I have heard it performed by so many different one man bands, I don't know who originally wrote it. Don't forget that for a long time every song you heard was done by song writers - so it is pretty unlikely that the great Chuck B. did that himself (but it wouldnt suprise me).

I guess there is no better place to post this for discussion...

I was looking around Fileplanet today and they are offering a new 'Personal Server' service. This will supposedly earmark bandwidth for paying members for FTP services.

The service is $6.95/month or $59.95/year.

They are still offering their regular public servers for 'free' (you still need a Gamespy ID).

I'm stuck with a 56K connection, if they really do have the bandwidth set aside it would be worth the $60.00 to have easy access to the latest demos and patches.

Just an example of a website offering two tiers of service.

Last October, I actually WON an stuffed monkey on treeloot by accumulating enough banana $'s (I found a pretty underminded way of getting the loot, but it was still legal). I filled out the forms, and was told to wait 2-3 months. It's been nearly a year now, and still no stuffed monkey

Exactly

Did Chuck Berry write that one himself or was it a remake? I've only heard that song in a live format. Must have been considered pretty racy for back then.
