are each available for free as Epic Games is allowing the
Internet Archive to host the installers for
both old-school first-person shooters. The post includes links and additional
details on what led to this moment. It also curses out Tim Sweeney after
praising the move, because internet. The effort to preserve these games is
helpful, as they are no longer for sale, and do not even have historical
listings on the Epic Games Store. So here are descriptions of these old timers from
Steam:

Keep memories alive, folks! My kid and I play UT2k4 all the time.
Back in the day when Unreal Tournament was popular and my reflexes were that of a young person, I played the heck out of that game.
Some of the player created levels were mind blowing, especially one that made use of portals take to you to a reversed mirror image of the place you just left. Anyone remember the name of that level?

I realllly want the source code for this. I'd love to fix some of the bugs that caused the occasional crash when running my favorite mods.

Once I became average (and thought I was good), I played facing worlds and was reminded to stay in my lane lol. I ended up just protecting our end to avoid decapitation. Awesome map and mode, but my quick reflexes were no match for skill.

Grew up playing Doom, Rise of the Triad, Duke3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Painkeep (Q1 mod), etc. Give me shrink ray guns, pipe bombs, off-hand hooks, voodoo dolls, suitcase nuclear rocket launchers, and cans of beans any day of the week over the constant WWII/Black Ops "gritty realism" cookie-cutter games we've been inundated with over the last 20 years.

The first time ya did the Unreal Castle flyby.... oh the memories.
I still have both games installed and fire them up every few years for a few minutes...;) Unreal Gold is a blast with the newest S3tc textures at 4k...;)

Never understood why Unreal/UT/Unreal 2/UT 2k4/UT3 were taken down from store fronts. If the problem was they didn't want to host the master server (which had to be extremely cheap), then why not just have a notice saying the multiplayer servers are no longer up, as other games do - even ones multiplayer focused. And why not UT 2k3/4 and UT3? Strange.
Oh and to talk about an actual Unreal game, Unreal Tournament does hold a warm spot in my heart. I had countless hours in it with the assault mode I think it was called. It was two teams with one defending, 1 attacking. Eventually it was modded to be similar to Counter Strike. Played it waaay too much. Then there was capture the flag with an iconic level (for its time) called Facing Worlds.
One of the nuttiest things on the Facing Worlds map was turning on rocket launchers only with slow motion and low gravity turned on. It was insanity all over the place, lol.

ohhh it's been a moment since i looked at my PC with amazement thinking this is fucking unreal. My standards were so low...

Same. Granted I mostly watched a cousin play Doom/ ROT/Duke3D, etc. until I finally got my own PC in 1998 and got to revisit them on my own.
That said, if you want a modern game that really feels like a throw back to those, look up Postal Brain Damaged. It brought back a lot of school memories like you mentioned with the absurd weaponry and crazy themes. It was a blast from beginning to end.
