Marathon Update

A Marathon Developer Update Video features Bungie's Joe Ziegler (not to be confused with 3D Realms' Joe Siegler) discussing the state of "a little game we like to call Marathon," the upcoming return of the first-person shooter series. Word is Bungie's been busy refining the game's concept and testing with "a lot of players" and that testing will expand to more players next year. Joe offers a sneak peak of a couple of images and the following outlook on where things stand:
There’s a variety of different things at different states inside of the game. Some things are a little bit more complete, like our environments are starting to come together in a really, really beautiful way. Some of the character models we’ve been iterating through so they’re coming together, but they’re not fully there yet. Our enemy models are still kind of a little bit in the early state, so we’re still iterating through and making those things land in a strong way. And a few of the items are still kind of coming online, so, it’s a little early to show you all of it as one piece. But as you’ve noticed, as many of you are familiar with, if you’re familiar with game development, all of these things are on track. They’re not all together, but when they all do come together, we really, really are looking forward to showing you what that looks like, especially in play.

Played this in the early 90's on an Apple computer. It will be interesting to see what the 'reboot' turns out to be.
We know what it is, it's ye another PvP extraction shooter. Not even a reboot.

Maybe Marathon can win gamers over in the long run?
Nice one! I am thinking it's more likely to be killed by its own starting shot at the beginning of the race.

I have a feeling this is going to be, "Concord 2: The extraction shooter". People saying ARC Raiders completing a closed beta test being a reason for them making this video. It's possible though only had 2,100 players at peak. Also I thought Marathon was supposed to be out next year but this sounds like he's a ways out.

Extraction shooters have become the, "everyone is going it yet, everyone is burned out on it" like battle royale games were years ago. There needs to be a change to the game play that addresses the, "gear fear" aspect of these games to make them more mainstream.
I enjoyed the play test for ARC Raiders. The visual atheistic and vibe of the environment was great. Making the NPC enemies all quirky robots is cool, and when their algorithms glitch out, it doesn't break the immersion for me (where as clunky monsters and humanoid NPCs are always lame to me). Gameplay is a bit slower, so are the gun battles, but I think that's a good thing and gives space for sneaky looting and solo players. I'm looking forward to the main release.
I got to play it a bit too and thought it was very interesting and polished along the same points. It's the game mode I'm not fond of and it needs a twist to set it apart from the many others out there. I know they basically redesigned the game play from a PvE only after the game was mostly complete and it shows.

There always is an "era". Deathmatch shooters, MOBAs, Battle Royales, now extraction shooters. The reason (at least in my opinion) that Deathmatch/MOBA eras lasted longer was due to no FOMO.

I played tons of deathmatch and also wasted thousands of hours on DOTA and League and I never experienced FOMO. Then Battle Royales rolled over, battle passes were introduced, and bam! FOMO was here with every single live service game released.

No Marathon fan wants an extraction shooter. This is like Sony bringing back Twisted Metal and turning it into a dating sim.
