Out of the Blue

There was a question in the forums this week about my excitement level about the NY Mets and what's so far been a dramatic postseason experience. The answer is that my excitement level is indeed pretty extreme, but I feel like I talk too much about sportsball for most people's tastes, so I try (and fail) to not overdo it. But I am on the topic right now, because as hard as it is for me to believe, I have to complain again about inconsiderate scheduling. For a second week in a row the New York Giants game is directly opposite the New York Mets game. Okay, not directly, the football game gets underway a full five minutes after the opening pitch for the baseball game. I don't imagine it's in the best interest of either league to have to split the audience in the largest media market in the country between two games. But I guess it's expecting too much Major League Baseball and the National Football League to be able to coordinate schedules on things like this? After all, a full four blocks separate each league's headquarters. Oh, yeah, and those offices are in midtown Manhattan, the heart of New York City. It's very hard to figure out the thinking here, as this seems like a money loser, and financial considerations are generally the main, if not only, factor in decisions like this.

My pleasure. Heard back. He says to tell you he is fine and just laying low until after the election. Then he'll figure out what he wants to do.
Understandable, troubling times but any way it goes he'll make the best of it, I'm sure, warm regards to RE9.

Thanks again BoP.

The Football schedule has been known for a long time since even before the season. The baseball schedule is the one that is possibly adjustable, since there could maybe be a variance in when a playoff game can take place, but I don't really find it very likely. Who thought that the Mets were going to make it to the NLCS though, honestly?

As an aside, I need to throw a bit of angst towards the media and the fans in these parts. You went from mercilessly slagging off Daniel Jones to calling him Danny Dimes and saying that "he's back!". Daniel Jones has some above average games, maybe even the occasional good game. The guy has decent mechanics and under very specific circumstances, he can be acceptable. He will NEVER be a Super Bowl quarterback. He will never even be a playoff quarterback. He has zero leadership skills. He has zero intensity. Half the time I think someone needs to poke him to make sure he remembers where he is. I don't dislike the guy. I think that he is marginally skilled. He's definitely better than I am. But he is not a winner, and he never will be. The Giants organization inexplicably spent tons of money on him, and he isn't going anywhere, but he's not ever going to be anything more than a brief mild surprise. Watch the interception that he threw in the first quarter and ask yourself if a quarterback who has been playing as long as he has should still be making staggeringly bad decisions like that. He's a Tony Romo with far less personality and less grace. He is anti-clutch.

Fall is football season, and those games fall on Mon, Thurs, but mainly Sat/Sun. There are only four months of football games where baseball, hockey, and basketball seven months long. So football scheduling should always take precedence. It's not like the MLB can't do it on any other day of the week besides Sunday to avoid competing with the NFL. There's only 1 game on Mon & Thurs, so even scheduling them on those days isn't a big deal. If they're stupid enough to schedule them on Sun during NFL that's on them. So write a scathing letter to the MLB and tell them to stop being such clowns. I'm sure you'll have as much luck getting them to change it as the getting the idiots at the NFL to change Superbowl Sunday to Saturday. What bunch of fucking morons thought having the biggest game of the year on a Sunday was a good idea?!

Gotta say that looked pretty cool.

Remind me again why NASA is still giving money to Boeing?

still feels to me like this isn't an ideal solution. a million pounds of controlled explosion hurtling into a million pounds of steel scaffolding. there's got to be a more practical way to recover the first stage. but yes, incredibly impressive technical achievement nonetheless.

Well, it's pretty apparent that we as a community have adopted the term 'sportsball'. That's kinda cool.

Despite playing multiple different sportsballs in my youth, I have zero fucks to give about any of them as an adult. However, I only lightly tease when I post "yay sportsball" here. Clearly sportsball is a big part of Blue's life so post away in my opinion.

The Starship launch was awesome. What was more amazing to me was the "chopsticks catch" on the very first attempt. That is nothing short of absolutely amazing. On top of that, Starship is the largest rocket ever launched by mankind. Just...awesome.

The asteroids for food farming reminds me of the Ousters in the Hyperion series of books as well as the same idea in the book The Ophiuchi Hotline. Now that is a book that needs a movie or at least a two season TV series.

Blue can you watch the football game on one screen and the baseball on another? Or record one while watching the other?

Blue, I have always thought that you should put whatever the hell you want on your page. This is a community you have here Blue, not a college class with a set curriculum. I can safely say that most of the community is fully aware of where your sports interests are and, I mean, you run a fantasy football league here right? (sorry, couldn't participate this year) Your baseball team is at a place that few teams get to be each year, and its been awhile for your team specifically. American football season consists of a mere 17 games, so every game matters. If you were this energetic about ballet and put it on the page every now and again, it would all be the same to me, Blue's News. If I ever want to see only "Jivaro's News", there is nothing stopping me from making that right? You do you is my vote.

I am also a sportsball dude. I just like competition and comadarie aspects of sports in general. I am the guy that truly enjoys turning on the Olympics to watch a sport like curling, a sport I don't see anywhere other then the Olympics in my day to day life. In the sports that I follow I tend to get very into the Xs and Os of it because I haven't been able to physically participate in sports since I was 32 (20ish years ago) due to a back injury. I enjoy hearing the standings and dramas of the various leagues throughout their seasons so that come playoff time, when I actually sit down and watch entire games, I have the full context. Now that I think about it, the first gaming tournament I ever won was a Madden '93 tournament on Sega. For me, video games and sports have always been linked I guess.

I love sportsball too, so any support for Blue talking sports might seem self-serving. I will mention other things that he talks about frequently though, like cooking and coffee. I couldn't care less about either. If this was a cooking and coffee page I would have not even bothered to visit it, much less have spent 23 years here. It's the one section that he can talk about whatever he wants. He could detail his daily bowel movements if he wanted - it's his page, and everywhere else he gives us non-sports, non-cooking, non-coffee (and non-bowel movent) topics to discuss. You're good doing what you do like you have been doing for decades, Blue.

True story from when I was around 11 or so:

Grandpa: watcha reading?
Me: Spider-Man
Grandpa: I have heard of him, is that like a horror comicbook?
Me: No, he is more man then spider, good guy.
Grandpa: *looks over panels* What in the hell is that white stuff he is shooting out of his hand?
Me: His webs?
Grandpa: *laughs for a few seconds to himself* When you are older, remind me of this coversation.

My grandpa with the dirty mind and zero children skills trying to show an active interest in my interests.......good times....lol.

So that we don't get locked into a single vendor in an industry that has a barrier to entry so hard that our best case scenario is 3 vendors.

I just watched a video about how much of a disaster our national parks are, almost entirely because there are 3 vendors that are capable of running them, so none of those vendors have much incentive to improve. If you don't like how Aramark is running Yosemite (and we don't, given major infrastructure issues, chemical spills, overpriced food, etc.), there are only two other options, and they all have identical issues in other parks, because they know no one has the scale to challenge them and know that they can be incredibly profitable while delivering a bad product so long as they all do it.

Privatization of NASA is a mistake. But that landing was insanely impressive.

Out of curiosity, does anyone here use BTN (broadcastthe.net)?

I'm trying to build a media server for a child, so that they aren't watching YouTube videos designed for dopamine hits that can go on indefinitely. Basically, trying to create 4-8 internally hosted TV channels with schedules, so the kid needs to learn basic skills like time management, and what to do with yourself when nothing you like is on. This means a wide variety of shows, some good some less good (looking at you, David the Gnome), for the kid to be watching parent approved stuff and seeing that the world isn't always on-demand.

Problem is, a lot of what I want to stick on this is long out of print and can't be purchased anywhere. I'd love to buy or trade for a BTN invite. I'm using the Internet Archive where I can, but some of what I'm looking for never even made it to DVD.
