Out of the Blue

Well, I've already had a full day, as an odd mishap with my editor deleted the entire bluesnews directory on my local PC (the danger of working with two decade-old software, I suppose). I was able to restore it from a backup, but lost the draft of today's news, which was a pain. I managed to piece most of it back together, which involved working through my email trash, which sort of feels like eating out of the dumpster. It was definitely more excitement than necessary for first thing in the morning, but at least everything is mostly back under control at this point.

Enh, I like the flicks with Edward Fox and Bruce Willis, but I think I'll be skipping this one. Great remark on YT made me LOL!

I read Rolling Stone's 50 most disappointing albums story just for fun to see if any albums that I liked ended up on there. What I found is that I never heard of at least half of them. Considering how old I am and how into music I was when I was younger I found that very surprising. But I was largely a radio kid in the 70's and an MTV kid in the 80's. If it wasn't a track that made it to one of those two places I probably never heard it. Even thinking about it now, I don't think that I can name the album from which any of the songs I liked back then came. There are a few exceptions, like Fleetwood Mac, but even in that case I stopped listening to them once Lyndsey Buckingham left so I didn't recognize that album name either. I was never that into AC/DC, Van Halen, or Black Sabbath. I was a Judas Priest and Iron Maiden tween. Once I got into Slayer and Megadeth I became the misfit that we all know and love today. 😁

Of course not. One does not give a gift expecting its return.

True confession: I used to like Barry Manilow when I was a kid. C'mon, you didn't rock out to "Copa Cabana"?

Nope. Growing up, I was exposed to a wide variety of genres and styles except "easy listening" because both of my parents thought that particular genre was garbage. I didn't hear "Copacabana" until the mid-80s and by then it was "music my grandparents would've liked" and I already had my musical tastes.

This will give you a clue as to my musical upbringing. I distinctly remember being 9 and my dad putting on Pink Floyd's Relics but he started on the B side and went directly to Careful With That Axe Eugene. Having a banging quadrophonic sound system was an absolute must in my parents' house back then. He didn't play it quietly. Encouraged me to lie on the floor, close my eyes, and soak it in. "Let it surround you and dive in to it" he said. Blew my mind that music could sound that good and have that incredible depth and breadth.

My wife really scared her mom when she said it was her favorite song. This was, like, 3 years ago. Her mom was one of the moms that liked the same music the kid did, though, which made the kid like the music less. As a result, my wife wasn't hugely into music like I was.

But she's also the reason we met Alice Cooper, and together we've seen Depeche Mode, Cold Cave, Cult of Luna, NIN, I find her randomly singing Thunder Cat, Ozzy and Sisters of Mercy, so it makes up for it. Even if she hated Ministry live.

My initial taste in music was the sappy easy listening crap that my mom played in the car and my dad's eclectic tastes. Englebert Humperdinck, Neil Sedaka, Luciano Pavorotti, Placido Domingo, The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Harry Mancini, Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow, Billy Joel, Elton John, and lots of Doo-wop from the 50's. My grandma basically worshipped Elvis Presley, and she was my hero, so I learned to like him too. I actually developed a massive love of the Beatles on my own, and that lasted a good while. I started to branch out on my own with Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin but eventually became a metal head and I have never stopped. Being a DJ and a musician taught me a wide appreciation of basically every genre there is throughout every decade since the 60's.

I absolutely loathe The Beatles. Ironically, it wasn't anything they did. There came a point in my dad's life where that's all he listened to so he could practice drumming against the albums. Day after day, week after week, month after month. He'd fire them up and I would take off like a scalded cat, disappearing in to the woods of the ranch until it got dark. Eventually it got to the point where even my mom told him to put on headphones as she was sick to death of hearing them. He complained that he didn't have a long enough cord. So the next day my mom and I moved his stereo and his drumkit out to the barn. Wouldn't you know it, a stereo extension cord magically showed up that same day.

Haha, I know that feeling - when something occurs to make you hate a band. In my case, an entire subset of music. I said that I learned an appreciation for music; but there remains one type that I absolutely cannot stand: contemporary country. (Well, it was "contemporary" at the time anyway...) Think anything from Garth Brooks and Dwight Yoakam on. My ex-wife listened to it to death. Constantly. On drives up north to our families houses, I had the choice of country music or Conservative talk radio - Rush Limbaugh. Sean Hannity. Michael Savage. Glenn Beck. and so on, and so on... For 18 hours. So I instead got to listen to "Springsteen" and "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" and the like. Over, and over, and overandoverandoverand... I mean, there's no fuckin way I was going to listen to 18 hours of conservative talk radio... At home, it was on constantly. CONSTANTLY.

What boss? Work 4 extra hours overtime tonight? Hell yes!!!

I’ve been intermittent fasting for over a year now. I started it mostly to lose/maintain weight as my metabolism has been slowly grinding to a halt. Basically removed breakfast and eat between noon and 7pm. Hard to start but not difficult to keep up with like counting calories. The tough part is I LOVE breakfast so cutting that out truly sucks, and the holidays are hard to stay somewhat in line and I’ll sometimes cheat but I can tell a difference the next day. My stomach gets pretty angry with me. Nice to hear there are other benefits as my mom’s side of the family struggles with high blood pressure.

To contribute to the music discussion: grew up an MTV kid, listened to hip-hop and some metal in the early 90’s, switched to alternative late 90’s and through college even DJing at an Alternative radio station for a short stint in ‘98. I don’t listen to much new stuff probably since 2015 as it all sounds like crap now.

All-time favorite band: Toad the Wet Sprocket hands down, they’re still making music and touring, releasing remasters on vinyl. Even my oldest son still in High School went with us to see them live. Probably the youngest person there.

Old man alert, bucket list is to see Billy Joel in concert and he’s coming to Texas at the end of this month. Tickets already bought.
