Dungeon Siege Delay

Microsoft just sent over a press release announcing that Dungeon Siege, their and Gas Powered Games' highly anticipated RPG, is being delayed until an unspecified time next year. The release is short, so here's the whole deal:
MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES SHIP DELAY FOR DUNGEON SIEGE

August 16, 2001 – Redmond, WA -- Microsoft and Gas Powered Games have made the careful decision not to release Dungeon Siege in the fall of 2001. Both companies remain extremely excited about the game and are committed to completing the title and bringing the highly anticipated game to store shelves in 2002.

“Our decision to delay the release of Dungeon Siege is one of the toughest we’ve had to make, but we firmly believe that this is the right choice given that one of the most critical steps in creating an RPG is the tuning and balancing stage,” said Chris Taylor, Lead Designer, Gas Powered Games. “We’ve made a promise to build a game that delivers an over-the-top experience, and we’ll do whatever it takes to deliver on that promise.”

This new development schedule will deliver the high-quality RPG game that fans demand and expect from Microsoft and Gas Powered Games. Additional updates will be posted on Dungeon Siege’s official website at http://www.microsoft.com/games/dungeonsiege/.

I really don't think you can compare a MMORPG w/ DS, they really aren't at all in the same genre.

MS has a RPG game coming out in November already.... Asheron's Call:Dark Magesty. Did you really thing they would release 2 games in the same genre at the same time? Although they might lose some sales due to a post holiday release on Dungeon Siege, they would make up for it by cashing in on 2 different games. Not to mention the fact that the RPG market is in the middle of a market flood. Never Winter Nights, AO, Dark Age of Camelot, many more all with close release dates. I think producers are finally starting to realize that people can purchse more games if they are spread out a bit more in release dates.

Both of these sides have points. Although i would concede that TA never caught on with the Gaming world. If you like a game you like it. But his point is valid that it never did appeal to the masses. It did get great reviews, was fun to play, but in the end, a lot of ppl went back to playing starcraft online, warcraft online, diablo online. Dungeon Siege should be a good game. TA is a paper classic. It wont be remembered in the elite group of other games 20 years from now is the point i think he was trying to get across. You gotta look at it like Star Wars with little kids. Those kids who are just gettig into gaming are hearing of Warcraft/diablo/starcraft/red alert. The majority of those wont have a clue what TA is. Unfortunate.

"Total Annihilation has already been lost in the wind. "

LOL Sadly it's the only game I still play. Starcraft, and Diablo are making nice coasters right now. I believe that Total Annihilation is the only game where you have to be afraid of the Nukes. Unlike other games, one nuke in TA can end your fun. Besides, after almost 4 years, you can still get mods for it.

TA was a fantastic strategy game. Better than any other I've played (but I am no expert having missed out on Stargate).

Yes, I'm let down very much by the delay, but if the game needs to be pushed back then by God push it back. Have any of you guys bashing the delay played Tribes2? I believe they are on their 30-something patch. Tribes2 has literally released multiple patches on the same day. They even had one released BEFORE the game was out. While I certainly don't mind patches when necessary, and they frequently are necessary AFTER the game is out, there's not much worse than paying full price for a game that is not finished yet.
As for the original release date, you must remember how long ago that was set, and it's a "target" date. I can assure you that with the team at GPG, this will not turn into an Anachronox or Diakatana.
With a game that will ship with an editor the likes of DS's, the game must be 100% finished when it comes out, or the fan-based mod community will not respond the way it did to Total Annihilation.
Better to wait a while.

As for NWN, if you really look into it, the games are targeting different groups. As for me, I'm biased quite a bit towards DS, of course.

And now for the plug... make sure to check out more about DS at http://www.planetdungeonsiege.com

HEy! screw you! have you played total anihilation?! All that matters is if you, yourself, are entertained by the game, who cares IF OTHERS HATE IT! You can't share legions of others gaming experience...it's your own personal experience that matters!!!!!!!!!!!(!)

Judging how good a game is by the number of people playing it is like saying nazism is cool because so many people were affected by it!

hitman codenam 47 anyone? very nice, unpopular game.

Yeah, Total Annihilation was a critically acclaimed game. Id like to see the actual sales, and how many ppl actually played it. It wasnt what iw ould call popular among hardcore gamers. It didnt hold the fanfare that Warcraft(s), starcraft, and Red Alert games did. And Microsoft is involved, it will be jacked in someway. No matter how well a game is reviewed, it isn't a masterpiece unless the legions buy it. Cult following is a must. Dont try to deny that. Total Annihilation has already been lost in the wind.

I used to think the same way, but now having spent a large portion of my life in the busy I am realizing there will only be delays from here on out. To be honest, I would rather take the approach that Hollywood has when it comes to films. Don't even make mention of the game to the mass public till it's about 6 months out.

I understand there are always rumors and announcements, but feeding the public screenshots and "so close" .plan updates often serve as only messengers of dissapointment when the games misses one (after another) release date.

I prefer media blackouts and perhaps it should be practiced more often.

"Yeah, im waiting for this one anyway...When Neverwinter Nights comes out, its all over for other RPG's. Microsoft is a FLOP when it comes to games."

Microsoft are just publishing the game. Gas Powered Games are the ones developing it and I believe Chris Taylor is quite capable of producing '*another' masterpiece.

I'd rather wait an extra few months and have a solid, stable title than have one out of the gate that requires 500MB of patches just to get it playable (can you hear me Terminal Reality and your damn Fly2!!!!)

Im not whining...so don't take this as such...i'd rather see them delay it and make it better as well.

I like the decision, A delay means there will be more of a story as well. I hate paying for a game that doesn't last long in the story department.
