Out of the Blue

Still letting the dust settle after yesterday's announcement. In a related development, we see a little advertising progress here, as I placed one of those nifty skyscraper ads (as if you hadn't noticed), it seems to fit the page format well enough, and I trust you will enjoy all the life-changing products it will offer over the time. In a further related note, there is a continued cry to create some function to allow concerned parties to make donations to the site, and while I have mixed feelings about such a measure (to say the least), it is starting to get hard to ignore those that are starting to get downright irate that we aren't doing this, so this is at least getting some serious consideration.

Play Time: 3D first-person Pong on LiquidMedia (Shockwave required). Thanks Jamie Wood. This is completely awesome.
Link of the Day: Makegames.com Royalty Calculator. Thanks Frostnick. Want to make a game? Want to make money? Apparently the two don't always go together.
Bonus Link: Monkeyphonecall.com. Thanks Noah. This is the type of thing that could spur another Internet boom.
Weird Science: US firm offers stars DNA copyright (BBC). Thanks Chris.
Wild Science: More Moons Around Earth? (Space.Com). Thanks zombie69.
Media of the Day: On a note related to the above, SwRI, UCSC researchers identify the Moon-forming impact. Thanks EvilToast and [MP] Wolverine [MP]. Demonstrates how the moon was formed with an animation, in case you were curious, or were planning on making your own moon someday.

Good to see them. I have a technical question for the two of you. I recently installed IE 6.0 on my machine. I noticed today that it shows the cookies that UGO and adserver try to place as blocked. Does this inhibit you from getting paid? If so I will change this immediately (after I figure out how to change it). The last thing I want is some setting that I don't care about keeping you from getting paid.

One question: Has anyone, ever bought anything from these ads.

I mean don't get me wrong, I do click for you to get something (I think that's still how it works) but I have never bought anything from those.

Anyone has ever done something with those?

Might want to tell these guys to make their background transparent instead of white so it'll blend in a little better. (at least for the casino numbers one, didn't notice they rotate at first)

About the donations, is it going to be a one time thing, or an ongoing process?

No, no one ever buys from these ads, or the 100 I get in snail mail every month - the only true business model is the advertisers who convince the postal service and now web sites to carry the ads, purley for 'product/name recognition' purposes.
I dont run MS Money because of the stupid advertising. I wont run media player because of the stupid advertising. If IE ever starts advertising I'll switch to netscape in a second. And if advertising become part of Windows I'll switch to that POS OS Linux. For 5 years (or so it seems) I have visited Blue's daily for game news - goodbye, enjoy your new revenue. People, we need to take a stand on this - let Blue's hit count drop to half for a week and see how long the ads last.

The ads influences you over time, seldom do they get you to say "oh, WOH!" and buy something from them. But if you see an ad for god-knows-what a zillion times you´ll see that you would prefer that brand over the unknown brand if you were to buy a product.

And I would be very happy if you put up some donations page or something like that. PayPal. I would easily fork up $5 now and then.
Don´t see it as a donation, see it as some communist way of subscribing to a webpage and supporting your fellow comrad. : )

Thanks, this has been somehow enlightening!

And the "3D first-person Pong on LiquidMedia" IS totally awesome!

Man I wish iD were to develop a new sort of PONG! Nothing even comes close!

You already have an account system. How about letting us pay to see an ad-free version of the site? I've been a faithful reader since it was Blue's Quake Rag and I'll probably never leave, but it sure would be a lot less annoying without the ads. And the "skyscraper ad" IS annoying.

YES! I aggree with this. I've been coming to blues multiple times a day since 1996. This is one of the rare sites i would consider paying a yearly subscription fee to read it in peace without annonying skyscraper ads. The small ones don't bother me..the large do.

So, what you say blue? And make a subscriber version have some more cool stuff that would entice others to subscribe...

Earlier my score was 10 or something like that, but when that guy posted that he reached 229 I had to beat it.
So my score now is 268, bwuahah. We´ll just forget that the computer had 500+ when the game was over... I won the last ball anyhow :p

Yeah, a subscription to get rid of the big adds(skyscraper) would be really great. I would pay for that.

Wouldn't the skyscraper add be less intrusive if it was down the left of the screen under the ugo ad? Or would that your revenue?

Anyway, I see the need for ads, and they hardly stop us getting our news do they? I don't come here because of the lovely layout (lovely as it is).

This is the site that I have consistently visited, since 1996, more than any other. I am willing to tolerate ads and I'm willing to pay money, I'm willing to accept both simultaneously. If Blue would set up a PayPal system or something similar, I'd be willing to throw $20 at him, which is more than I'd ever pay for a subscription to a print magazine...

Oh well. Call me what you will.

I have had free access to web sites
for 3 or 4 years now. I am not going
to start paying. Not because I do not
like blue or the site.

I don't know if I can stand the ads or not either.
This is the first page I go to in
the morning. When that skyscraper popped
up I thought "Uh Oh". I 'm going or the
site is going. Soon.

Flame on.

Hey Blue, I don't mind the ads at all. But I was thinking maybe you should join some of those Associates Programs with Amazon.com, Reel.com etc. I buy a lot of DVDs and books online, and I wouldn't mind going through your site to get them so you can earn a 5-15% referral fee each sale. I'm sure many others would do the same.
