Out of the Blue

I'll have a project later today when we take delivery of a new desk for MrsBlue to set up an office for her new job. One of us is convinced she's going to enjoy a standing desk, so the other of us is going to have to build it for her. I'm not actually complaining, as I enjoy putting things together. It may turn out she loves switching between sitting and standing, but if she doesn't, she can just pick one and stick with it, so this should work out fine either way. For my part, while I appreciate that measures should be taken to counteract the effects of sitting too long, the idea of standing at my desk does not hold any appeal.

When was the last time you heard about problems with other competitors' planes? All I ever hear is "737 this" and "737 that." It’s gotten to the point where online booking services now include the plane type as a filter. Having plane type as a filter option shouldn’t even be necessary.
The 737 has become somewhat of a meme lately, but it is just as safe as any other airliner currently in use.

The 737 is not one specific plane, it's a family of aircraft which have been in service since the late 1960s. The one that tends to crop up in the news the most is the 737 MAX, and there are four different variants of the 737 MAX. There have only been two fatal crashes involving the 737 MAX. Those were the 2018 and 2019 crashes that caused all 737 MAX aircraft to be grounded. Think about that for a second. No one has died traveling on a 737 MAX since 2019.

Don't be overly alarmed by these sort of aircraft articles. Anything 737 related gets a ton of press now, even a relatively normal issue like this.

You guys would never fly, drive, sail or ride a train ever again if you got every malfunctioning equipment and computer navigation failure reported to you. Walking and maybe ox drawn carts only? The insane number of flights (safe, uneventful flights) in the USA alone would amaze you. Flying is far and away far safer than any other form of travel, by multiple orders of magnitude. Of course, nothing with human input is ever going to be 100% safe or effective.

Airbus has the same sort of failures and critical failures, all manufacturers do. It's turning into kind of a WWII survivorship bias problem at this point, eventually these relatively few 737s for this latest malfunction (2 UAL actual in service jets, 350+ of the part in circulation) will be fixed and located. It's also only on MAX and Nex Gen, so most of the 737 fleet worldwide is probably exempt from this particular issue. The NTSB and FAA process is actually pretty good at fixing stuff like this, it just doesn't happen overnight. Still far faster than critical car/truck safety recalls, for example. Good luck getting updated railways and ground infrastructure within our lifetimes too.

Only thing crazy to me is how Airbus gets a pass on some shit, and because of the recent press, Boeing actually has to fix stuff immediately. Don't even read up on other manufacturers, lol.

Support striking Boeing employees, this pressure will make Boeing better in the end or hopefully get their relatively new leadership ejected. Or both, hopefully.

*EDIT* Fairness.

Satellite phones are rather expensive and the plans more so. Think old school cell phone plans where you were charged by the minute. Average cost is $1.50 per minute for all outbound voice calls. Phones start at about $900. Some cell phones do have emergency satellite service for SOSes but that is entirely dependent on the carrier. In the future, though, this will not be a point of concern for the family.

Solar power and an Onan whole house generator that runs off of propane. One of the things I did the last time I was there to see her was install a far better smart panel and energy management system than what she had previously. She is not exclusively tied to the grid. So her well, septic, and house run on what she produces.Outside of this emergency, she normally runs off of pure solar 24/7. Her electric needs are mostly lighting and appliances minus water heater, stove, and heating. Water heater and stove run off of propane. Heating is provided by a wood stove.

I bought a standing desk when everyone was working from home during the pandemic.

I seldomly use it standing up as it's not that comfortable working standing up. It also feels kinda awkward as I'm used to working sitting down.

However, a benefit of having an adjustable desk is that I can practice proper keyboard and mouse ergonomics by adjusting the height of the desk along with adjusting the height of my chair.

/---\

A couple of hours ago I got off the phone with my little sister and I was so relieved to hear her voice. She lives in western NC. Yes, that part. The one that is currently shattered and looks like a post-apocalyptic hellscape. She's got power, water, and the ability to cook thanks to her self-sufficiency and my pushing her to be more prepared. It also helps that she's smart, tough, and capable. Because of her position on the mountain, she wasn't flooded out. Her neighbors down the mountain and in the valley, unfortunately, weren't so lucky. One of them lost their home, their livestock, vehicles...everything. She's brought them up to her place and they are staying with her for the duration until federal assistance can arrive. The rest are coming up to charge phones, battery packs for oxygen machines, take a hot shower, get hot food (many are bringing food that was about to spoil in freezers and fridges plus canned goods, preserved foods, and dried foods) and to do laundry. They're straight dumping gray water because her septic system was never intended to handle that many people.

She said an assessment crew managed to make it up to her and one of the assessors told her it would be two weeks minimum before things would begin to return to normal. One of the main water lines was unearthed, underminded, and then completely swept away by the flooding and the roads don't exist any more to get trucks in with the equipment to repair it. Same is true for the power lines. The poles and a couple of the transmission towers are just gone. I asked her how she was getting a call out and she said she hiked to the top of the mountain (in the goddamned dark) and it seems there's a cell tower operating somewhere that she got two bars from. She said she'd call me again in a couple of days to update me on the situation and admonished me "Now don't you get in your goddamned truck, drive straight through, and try to 4x4 your way up here." I grumbled a bit and said I was smarter than that. She just laughed and replied "Normally yeah. But you're a big brother than can't help being a big brother. We're fine. Now hang up the phone so I can call Mom and Dad."

Since I happened to be at my parents house today being the family lumberjack and rented mule, I came in for dinner and the first thing my mom says is "Heard from your sister. She said she talked to you first. Said for me to tell you not to go there which I assured her you wouldn't." And here I got a pointed look. "But I didn't say anything about hiring someone with a helicopter to drop in supplies if she needed them." That just got me to laughing because that is exactly something my mom would come up with.

That's pretty funny actually. Except police are often acting without impunity already. Would we notice a difference?

I agree that it is time for the 737 to retire permanently and a clean sheet design to replace it. Or buy Airbuses. They don't seem to blow out doors, crash intentionally, and randomly kill people.

Bioprinted food has yet to prove its worth in the market. While it’s a promising concept, the key questions remain: Will consumers buy it, and at what price?

All it has to do is be tasty, healthy, and cheaper than actual meat and it'll succeed. Anything that puts an end to Big Meat is a good thing. Shit, I'd rather eat astronaut style food out of tubes anyway. I always loved all the synth foods of the future in games like Shadowrun and Cyberpunk 2077.
