Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Next Month; PC Requires PSN Account

The PlayStation.Blog has more details on Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, including word the action/adventure remake is coming to Windows PC as well as PlayStation on October 31st. This follows the confirmation of rumors to that effect, and includes word on what's being improved seven years after the initial launch. Sony has taken harsh criticism over recent ports that still require a PSN account to play on PC, but that has not deterred it from making that a requirement here as well. Word is: "Account for PlayStation Network required on PC." so if you spot mobs with pitchforks, you'll know what's happening. Here's the Announce Trailer with a look, and here are more details:
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered launches on October 31. The captivating story and awe-inspiring post-apocalyptic world returns alongside a host of technological improvements, visual enhancements, and upgraded features. It also includes The Frozen Wilds content, a vast expansion featuring additional lands, skills, weapons, and machines. Take a look at the announcement trailer below.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered features over 10 hours of re-recorded conversation, mocap and countless graphical improvements that bring the game to the same visual fidelity as its critically acclaimed sequel Horizon Forbidden West. The game’s lush world includes frozen mountains, dense jungles, and arid deserts with stunning new visuals and 4K graphics and travelling between settlements is now lightning-fast.

And especially single player games...

Anyone else around here remember how much people bitched about Half-life 2 needing a Steam account?

Who said I love Steam now?

Every time I have to "log in" to something is a friction point.

Not long ago I tried to plug in a second controller into a Xbox Series S to play Diablo 4 along with my significant other.

So I push the button, now they ask me to log into my Microsux account, I'm pissed, but I do it, next I have to authenticate using their smartphone app. Next they send me to open a Blizzard link in a browser to link my Battlenet account to the Microsux account, so I do, but it's not over yet!

Now I have to authenticate using the Battlenet app on the smartphone. Battlenet app wasn't installed yet, so I had to install it, log in, now the Battlenet authenticator app asks me to confirm who I am by using the authenticator app.

And in between every single step that console goes "This is security related so now you have to enter your password again!"

And this went on for THIRTY MINUTES of jumping through hoops and hoops and hoops.

Remember when all you had to do to play with someone else on a console was push a single button and it took seconds? Pepperidge farm remembers...

Seconds VS 30 minutes...

Now you come here and laugh at this resistance and reluctance to "log in and link everywhere" culture. THAT'S WHY I WANT TO KEEP THAT DUMBASS STUPIDITY AS FAR AWAY FROM PC FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.

This is a fracking joke. One hour to pick up a game on a console you own, with a controller you own on a game you own in my own fracking home.

HOW THE FRACK CAN YOU DEFEND THAT STUPIDITY WHEN YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THAT ALL IT TOOK WAS A SINGLE BUTTON PRESS NOT 15 YEARS AGO?

I certainly do and everyone was right to. Early days of Steam were a damn nightmare and I didn't even care about HL2. I was heavily into CS at the time and suddenly being forced to use Steam which had so many server problems was infuriating. Nothing quite like a game which previously worked perfectly fine being held hostage by login servers that didn't. One of several reasons the "Steam saved PC gaming" crowd pisses me off.

Yep. The same shit we hear today about Epic or whatever.

Still, with the move to digital purchases the need for each game to have some sort of launcher makes sense, whether that's Steam, Epic, Gog, whatever. Multiple launchers and suchlike accounts, not so needed. I don't mind an optional account for each game's publisher as well as the store launcher, but this sort of thing being required is just to suckle on our sweet, sweet data.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition launched in August 2020 on Steam. The same game is getting a remaster only 4 years later. If you told me this lunacy before I heard it for myself I flat-out wouldn't believe you. What kind of drugs are they doing over at Sony? I have to get me some.

It came out in 2017 for the PS4, which is what the PC graphics are based on. It's more a remaster for the PS5 pro, and since it's out on the PC, why not release it there too. Seven years for a remaster for a new system isn't really that crazy. And considering its only going to be $10 if you own the previous version, it's a fair deal, considering the rerecording of audio, mo-cap, new models, etc. involved.

My game was released in 2020. If they wanted me to think that it released in 2017 then they should have done a PC release at the same time, shouldn't they?

But in reality, I had a PS4 in 2018 and I bought Horizon with it. However, a remaster after 7 years is ludicrous. Maybe it's all semantics now but words like "remaster", "remake", "reboot" etc used to have an actual meaning, and games just never got remastered after 7 years. That is so ridiculous that I can't believe that I am saying it. Hey, they can do it every 5 years, and just call them re-remastered, then re-re-remastered, then...

Well the last of us was released in 2011, remastered for PS4 in 2014 and a remake for PS5 in 2022, now that's overdoing it, and GTA V also has a similar amount of versions

I see barely any changes for PC. Upgraded some DLSS dlls, which you could have done yourself. It doesn't look like they added even basic ray tracing.

I found the main story and combat fairly interesting. The side-quests, though, were mostly lame fetch-quest filler.

To play devil's advocate, this game is older than Shadow of the Colossus was when it was remastered for PS3.

Sony Grunt: Excuse me?
Sony Exec: Yes...?
Sony Grunt: With all the controversy around making PSN a requirement for single-player games, what improvements have actually been made in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered?
Sony Exec: We made PSN a requirement.
Sony Grunt: How is that an improvement?
Sony Exec: It allows us to track users and up-sell.

Not that I'd spend the $10, but looks like they're hanging the GoG version out to dry. Then there's the implication that PSN account is mandatory which means there are probably a lot of people who have the game on PC who won't be allowed to upgrade. All of this just to have something shiny for the PS5 Pro launch, but still maximize profits.

The most unneeded remaster ever.

+1

They are doing this for PS5 Pro so we will get a slew of very unnecessary remasters in conjunction with the Pro model's release. On the bright side, I'm sure that some devs/publishers will maybe update the PC versions of their games for free, or, like HZD, offer an affordable "upgrade" path (HZD Remaster is gonna be €9.99 for owners of the base PC version). I'm not going to buy the remaster of HZD but I'm sure hoping for some free updates from other gigs...

My guess is that they lack anything new to launch in the pipe prior to holiday season, so they're releasing this now to entice new players and to give credence to the PS5 Pro.
