Haha no. They banned that practice long before I was in. I'm remembering that the captain had enormous disciplinary power. He could confine you to quarters (either aboard ship or in the barracks), reduce your pay to half for up to 6 months, and put you on bread and water rations for 3 months. Trust me, you didn't want to be on bread and water and confined to quarters for 3 months. I had to stand watch over someone who had that punishment. That's before the Court Marshal, which you have you making little rocks out of big rocks in military prison for a long time. No parole and no appeal in military prisons.
