Out of the Blue

Life comes at you fast, and to help prove the point, tackle football season is now once again upon us. Tonight is a terrific opener for the NFL as the Ravens take on the champion Chiefs. There's another game tomorrow night in Brazil, of all places. Brazilians love football, but Pele didn't wear a helmet, and that passion is directed at an entirely different sport, so that should be interesting. Anyway, this means there's still time to get in on the ground floor of the Pigskin Pick'em 2024 Blue's News Group (password "bn"). It's free to join, free to play, and there's nothing at stake but pride, but you can't put a price on that. Feel free to share the link and password, and good luck to all participants.

Game Round-up

I suppose that is true. As I said, it doesn't matter. I look at two Amazon productions, "Rings of Power" and "Fallout" . The first has an intensely unlikeable protagonist and seemingly revels in bad writing and nonsensical situations and dialogue, while the second is a fantastic, smart, well-acted, and excellently written tale that is true to the lore and spirit of it's namesake. I've had people who will equally be supportive of me not liking "Rings of Power" because of its "wokeness" and incredulous that I like "Fallout" in spite of its "wokeness". I can't help but be equal parts amused and sad for them. I hope such people can find happiness one day, because they sound anything but happy now.
It's almost as if diversity has no bearing on whether or not a show is good.

I didn't get that impression at all from Rings of Power.
I actually had to keep re-reading your post to make sure I was following correctly.
Didn't like the lead in Fallout at all and the plot there was middling.

Well differing opinions are a thing. I hated RoP. But my son really likes it. I found Lucy in Fallout very likeable and believable because of how people are portrayed when living in vaults. Her naivety giving way to a more sardonic worldliness is what I call an arc. Good characters need them. But that's why there's more than one thing to watch on TV.

I've said this before, but I don't care about what agendas or messages or whatever else is in or perceived to be in media. I literally don't care. Overwatch characters were compelling and exciting. Concord characters were boring and completely lifeless. I don't care about anything beyond that.

This might be shocking to some who are inclined to notice every time a non-white, non-male, non-hetero, non-attractive character is in a game and needs to evaluate the "appropriateness" of it. But I don't notice it. At all. I notice if the gameplay is compelling. If the world is lively and well-established. If the writing and dialogue are good. If the characters are likeable and interesting. I have to see some self-important blowhard yelling about it on YouTube or read the bickering on here before I even think about it. Then I get annoyed that people waste so much time arguing this nonsense back and forth. Or, more to the point, I get annoyed at myself that I wasted time watching or reading it.

It's not just you Prez. This is 99% of people. The vast, vast majority of people simply don't care about that stuff politically in their media. They just want something engaging and fun. This is after all a pastime and hobby.

And as I keep pointing out, we had better get used to it, because corporations are financially motivated to build diversity into their products.

One might ask the question, "If people don't care, why does diversity sell?" It's because people don't think about it politically, they think about it from an engagement standpoint. If they see a character that looks/acts like them, they're going to find that more engaging. Having a wide, diverse cast of characters in movies, TV, games, etc. is going to accomplish that.

Apparently it's political to have characters others don't want to fuck.

So it's a DEI thing? But how's that different than Overwatch with chars like Zarya and Mei and (apparently) Soldier 76? Overwatch sold 50 million copies by the way.

From my own eye, the chars in Concord were just uninspired, boring, and derivative. The failure of the game didn't have to do anything with their DEI-ness. If you're going to build a hero shooter, then you need interesting heroes. And there's a marketing failure here as well. Blizzard spent a year at least building hype for its game with its excellent animated shorts. Concord was kind of released with little fanfare.

Did you ever play Overwatch? I would say "who wants to fuck Junkrat, or Roadhog. Or Zarya. Or Moira." And yet, there's SO much rule 34 for all of them. Heroes in gaming don't have to be conventionally attractive. But they have to be interesting and fun.

There was more behind that link than how Beamer named it though. Ofc it's not all about attractiveness. But hey, you either see the on the nose box checking done in Concord or you don't. If you don't, I'm not going to spell it out. Because I don't care enough. Fuck this game.

There's a lot of box checking in Overwatch too, but it's not annoying because A.) the game is fucking great and B.) it's explicitly about the different cultures and stereotypes in our world -- it really leans into it. It's diversity done well if you ask me.

The issue is that Sony backed a product that heavily pushed a political agenda, which led to swift and massive pushback. If Sony had pushed the developer to focus on non-political elements with a strong, lengthy single-player story, Concord might have become a genuinely unique offering. I mean, I would’ve probably played something like that, especially since Blizzard scrapped the story mode for Overwatch 2—a feature many were really excited about.

All I can say to their decision is "FRNxT GHRT sony GURM" and then point to random things.
It pushed a political agenda? I watched the marketing and some gameplay vids, but didn't see anything explicitly political. Or are you just talking about Sony trying to buy its way into the genre by acquiring this studio?

Apparently it's political to have characters others don't want to fuck.

Not much wrong with what's in that link. But what the fuck, maybe I have crocodile skin. The contemporary social narrative was very much on the nose with this one, and it's fucking annoying. That said, it actually does kinda make sense for a robot with no human traits in its appearance to disclaim their pronouns 😂

Hey Hexen 2 was the shit! I like watching retrospectives on YouTube. And the pajamas say "Bounty Hunter". I think they are from Mandalorian. My mom or my sister probably picked them up for me at some point.

And BoP, it is fun for me too. I needed something like that to help me smile a bit myself. My sister wants me to wear them all of the time. The note a the wrapping were there. You da man.
