Out of the Blue

A holiday weekend is upon us, as we celebrate Labor Day here in the US. But gaming never takes a day off, and PAX West is underway in Seattle. This is considered the unofficial end of summer here in the US, and while it's cool and overcast right now, the forecast suggests more heat on the way, so it seems summer isn't done with us yet. The weekend is usually marked by lots of cookouts, so hopefully the weather will cooperate for most folks. This is also the last weekend without tackle football for a while, as the NFL kicks off on Thursday, so here's a reminder to join the Pigskin Pick'em 2024 Blue's News Group (password "bn") if you want to test your skill at picking winners for fun and no profit. It's free, so feel free to jump in and/or share the link with others.

Of course the F1 piston was made by Cosworth.

Who else would you go to for engine perfection?

Heh.

Though mice rarely carry rabies and there has never been a confirmed case of mouse to human transfer.

I haven't seen the latest.
Life has a great cast, some of my favorite actors. Which is probably I overrode my instinct not to watch it. Also, it came out seven years ago, so I guess I didn't recall the reasons I was warned away from it.

I'm listening to the excellent Going Rogue podcast right now, and it dissects movies, mostly bad to mediocre ones. One recurring theme is how many movies deviate radically from their scripts because the director didn't like it (Ridley Scott's Robin Hood) or start filming without a script at all (Quantum of Solace). The original Robin Hood script, titled "Nottingham," sounded awesome. What was actually made was a muddled mess, because it was a page one rewrite and Scott is not a writer.

Of course Romulus was going to be shit. It's a jump scare movie with Xenomorphs. I liked Resurrection a lot, the casting and pacing was perfect. I'd rate them in order of Alien, Aliens, Resurrection. Three and Covenant and the rest all suck balls, and not in the good way. I liked AvP as well. The first one, and Requiem wasn't bad either. I love Predator 1 and 2 - I may even like 2 better than one. Love the casting in that one too. Danny Glover, Gary Busey, and Bill Paxton were all in fine form for that film - "Fucking voodoo magic, mon!" Predators with Adrian Brody was good too. The rest are okay.
Have you seen the Predator movie Prey from a couple of years ago? Really excellent.

Yeah, I figured there was a reason I hadn't watched it yet. I'm sure your warning was buried in my subconscious. I did start fast forwarding after 20 minutes so I only lost an hour. 😄

JFC! Just watched Alien: Romulus and cannot believe how bad it was. Not only is it actually "I Know What Alien Did Many Summers Ago" (i.e. a teen horror movie) but it has so many stupid ideas that I think the producers, writer(s), and the director thought that their audience is already braindead because of watching Tiktok videos for hours each day. What did they think? Prey, that solid but not perfect Predator movie that came out in 2022, is waaaaay better than this new Alien movie. I understand why they wanted to put it on Hulu instead of giving Romulus a theatrical release. Nothing makes sense in this movie. Fede Alvarez, the director, actually did some good to decent horror movies in the past but this one feels like he was held back A LOT by the production company which means basically, Ridley Scott (since this is a Scott Free production). DAMN! This movie is about as bad as Alien Resurrection and Covenant. What a shame and what a wasted chance. The Rainman bot, the very bad cgi Ian Holm, the hilariously stupid teens (typical of teen horror movies), the cardboard cut-out character cliches, the weird physics, the alien/engineer hybrid baby, and many many other seriously bad elements of this movie are just unforgivable IMO. Seriously, with entries like this they are killing the Alien franchise. It made Alien vs. Predator look good.
So the curse continues. Thanks for your sacrifice. I had heard from a friend that it was actually good. I may watch it when it comes to Netflix or wherever, but I won't be wasting any money on it.

Speaking of wasted effort, I got around to Alien clone Life earlier this week. Like Prometheus, it had a stacked cast as well as amazing design work, sets, costumes, and effects. But the story was completely brain dead and ridiculous. I should have known what I was in for with the opening scene that would make any NASA engineer shit himself with fear and disbelief. But I persevered and it only got worse. I appreciated the ending, but it is not worth the preceding 90 minutes of suffering.

After how the 'Alien' mythos has been obliterated for the last 4 decades, I can't even be bothered to watch 'Romulus'. Like 'Terminator' and 'Halloween', they can milk the franchises to death with awful movies until the cows come home. As far as I am concerned, "Terminator" ended after the first two movies, "Halloween" had only one minimalist, brilliant horror movie, and Ripley and Newt lived out the remainder of their lives peacefully on Earth after "Aliens". The rest is fan fiction.

I saw Romulus and it was ok, if I'd known it only got a B+ on cinemascore I would not have wasted my time.
By far the best part was the modified pulse rifle with "aim-assist" and I have to agree with what you spoilered, it was beyond bad.
