Pool of Radiance 2 Preview

There's a Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor preview on GamesDomain with hands-on impressions of the upcoming sequel to Pool of Radiance, the first-ever Dungeons & Dragons CRPG. The preview offers comparisons to competing products, comparisons to the original PoR, an explanation of why the game will not quite live up to the promise of fully implementing the 3rd edition D&D rules, and more. In addition to the preview, the article offers a bunch of brand-new screenshots.

THE Sequel to Pool of Radiance? Aug 12, 2001, 22:44

I'm not sure how they're getting away with calling this the sequel to Pool of Radiance. Follow along with me. First there was PoD, then there was Curse of the Azure Bonds. It didn't pick up the story line of PoD but you could import characters from PoD. I think it did mention some of the events in the first game. Anyway, next there was Secret of the Sliver Blades, again you could import characters from the previous game. Finally there was Pools of Darkness. again with the character import. If any thing could be called a sequel this was it. It actually did pick up where PoD left off. So does this new Pool of Radiance start after Pools of Darkness or does it negate it?

If it really wants to be a sequel it should let us import Pools of Darkness characters%) Ha!

(I edited this for spelling. Doh! I forgot to use spell check.)

They should include the original Pool of Radiance with Pool of Radiance 2. I can't imagine anyone still buying the original, and it was made I think longer than 11 years ago. Its a classic.

Just got done reading the actual preview and was shocked to read that player's cannot choose skills or feats on character creation or level ups - the computer does it for you. WTF?! What kind of crack are they smoking at Stormfront? One of the best things in 3rd edition is to customize your character with feats and skills and now Pools of Radiance 2 will negate that new feature. Dumbasses! That one f*$#up will keep me from buying Pools 2. God knows what else the geniuses at Stormfront decided to keep out.

Bitter

p.s. Stormfront, in their infinite wisdom (-6), also ommitted Bards, Wizards, Druids and Gnomes. Good job guys! But stand up soon, Stormfront, that way you can get the blood back into your brains.

Woo hoo! I played a number of those old Forgotten Realms rpgs (and even had the construction kit that came out sometime in the 90s) but I don't think I beat any of them. I got really really far in Treasures of the Savage Frontier but I don't think I ever finished it. But then again, it's been a long time and I hardly remember anything about any of them. Except that I always feared battles with ogre mages.

I played the original. I remember one part towards the end when you were in the ice and the hallways keep splitting. It seemed like forever to get through that part. All you had to do was keep moving forward and you'd make it (Hmmmm, sounds kinda strange). Anyhoo... It's the one with the blue cover and the lady in red or orange I think. It's at my parent's house I think. I wish I could convert 5-1/4" disks somehow, hehe.

UPDATE... I rooted through some old crap and found the disks for "Secret of the Silver Blades" and "Treasures of the Savage Frontier" also. They were released in 90 and 92 respectively. I also found some "Big Blue Disk" stuff, anyone remember those?

I noticed that PoR2 was an SSI game. After seeing Bioware handle the D&D games for so long, it should be interesting seeing what SSI comes up with- they haven't done anything for ages now, have they?

He means that the original Pool of Radiance (this story is about the sequel) was the first Computer RolePlaying Game using the Dungeons and Dragons rules and settings.

I didn't know that, but you learn something new every day.
