Quake 4, Untitled id Game Revealed [Aug 10, 2001, 4:05 pm ET] – Share – Viewing Comments

is the first out of the gate to report that at id Software's press conference
this afternoon at QuakeCon, they have announced two new projects. Quake 4, which
is being developed by Raven Software, will utilize id's latest technology, and will bring the series back to the Strogg-universe featured in Quake II. Also
announced was an untitled, completely new franchise in development at Nerve
Software (who are also working on Return to Castle Wolfenstein's multiplayer),
which is said to be "a multiplayer co-op title using id technology."
Activision will be publishing the untitled project, Quake 4, and DOOM for the
Game Boy Advance. A publisher (or title, for that matter) for the new DOOM title
has not yet been announced. The press conference is still going on, and we'll
report more as it comes out. Update: Another report is up at ShackES, which also describes the new DOOM footage shown during John Carmack's talk, saying that it looks to be, "very dark, slow, and storyline-oriented." Update II: The GameSpy Daily report originally mentioned "Matrix-style effects," but this turned out to be some sort of miscommunication on their end, and this portion of the article has been corrected.

Wolf may have been revolutionary ,along with Doom as well ,but Doom2 was 'Outshined' by Duke nukem and Hexen ,no the other way around.
Same thing with Quake 2 ,witch,although it wasn't bad at all,was miles to be even close to Jedi Knight or Hexen II.
I totally agree. id hasn't been known for single player games, they've been known for game-engines and multiplayer games.

ooooo, baby. You just know the wood ones'll be modeled with the wood grains actualy part of the crate, so you can see the dips and ridges. The stapled on plastic shipping straps will stick off, and you'll be able to shoot 'em for sure. and splinters - my god man the splinters!
And the metal ones - dentable. You know it's true, you can feel it in your bones - the advances in shipping container oriented rendering and interaction technology™ over the last few years have been amazing, simplye amazing. And you'll boot the small ones with your marine's rubber soled boots (as mentioned in a previous post) and paint chips and shipping labels will shred off as it slides across the hard warehouse floor and take that other wannabe crate games.
oh, and when the wood crates tumble into lava they'll surely burst into heavy flames, rather than just sink, and the metal ones will start to melt, and the residue will ooze across the lava surface like the T1000 in Terminator 2.

Yes, you're right it can break a game.
In Quake, it was an important part of the game. Since it has been copied by many other games, it has worn out. But nobody can imagine a Quake game without Lava. So therefor, it must be done better than any other lava. Of course, I don't want a game with lava everywhere. A few levels will be enough. But it better be good, because this is Quake. Same goes for anything else that made the game what it became. Hard, dark, rusted, mechanical, creepy and a bloody mess.

I don't want my Quake original. I enjoyed Quake2 when it came out. I played for months. Since then I have played tons of original titles. It will feel great to see my old Quake2 universe again. Just even better and with a deeper story. That's what I want, and therefor I'll buy it if they do it well. I expect the lava to best lava ever made in a PC game. Better than the lava from the HEL levels in RUNE.

what the hell. 10 - 20 years???? I can imagine quake4 being mixed with soldier of fortune and quake2...... that would be kick ass... nice graphics, nice skins, nice everything!... but then again we going to need faster computers, video cards, etc.. but as long as the gaming technology keeps going fast at its best!
Even though I love multiplayer, I also enjoy single player action very much. So I'm happily looking forward to the new single player games like Quake 4, Unreal II, and Return to Castle Wolf. Whether it is original or not doesn't matter to me, if the gameplay is as addictive as it was in id's previous titles, I'll be happy.

Quake 4 will be exactly what we expect. It will be a first person shooter with a range of guns, strogg bases and jumping/shooting/running/press-the-button/find-the-red-key puzzles. But then again, that is what we expect and want. id and Raven are going to give us what we want and what we expect. We are going to buy it.
Quake's 1, 2 and 3 are written with a primary purpose in mind - to sell the engine to other game developers. Don't even ask how much money id get every time someone sublicenses their engine. And I don't need to point out the vast numbers of games that have done so. Some games are good and successful (half-life, anyone?) and some make a brief splash and are forgotten (fakk2, anyone?) but in all cases id get their money.
We aren't going to see anything radically different from this particular stable. But id are going to deliver the gameplay experience their public want and are going to make a lot of money.

but a revisitation of the Strogg world doesn't really excite meMe neither, it seemed like an excuse for making levels and having some sort of singleplayer experience. On the other hand there was plenty of action, the guns were somehow nice and the enemies looked cool.
Plus there was a lot of action, so I wouldn't mind as long as it is fast paced action.
QuakeI's hacked together game world had a lot more atmosphere going for it, than QuakeII's series of alien industrial parksIt could have been better though, it really seemed to me
like they took a lot less time piecing together the singleplayer experience of Quake2 than they did Quake.
